  • Faulty drives, useless customer service.
This is the second drive I've had same issue. There's a persistent clicking during idle you can hear, and even feel if you put your hand on the case of your pc closest to the driver enclosure/mounting point. Happens every 3-4 seconds, and will not go away. I've tried everything that has been suggested, ran the SeaTools long test which stops the clicking for the 17 hour duration, but it comes back immediately afterwards. I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary, just trying to get this drive to be a decent mass storage for media in my PC. Connected to a power supply with wattage to spare, then a sata cable straight to my motherboard. Hell, I even have a regular 3TB barracuda drive that works perfectly and is silent. Worst part is when I decided to contact SeaGate customer service, I gave them the serial number of the drive, and received two different emails telling me it "is an internal component of the external hard drive" without explaining what that actually means in context of my issue. The second of the two emails then informed me that because of this fact, they aren't able to act on the warranty. Now let me tell you right now, this drive was sold directly from Amazon, and I'm aware some people do sketchy returns, but this came in sealed OEM packaging, it was unopened, was not formatted, had the right amount of space, and the label was pristine and untouched. So if there's any fault here in terms of it somehow being the wrong item, I'm willing to put that on Seagate. That said, so the five year warranty these drives come with? Try one weekend and Seagate is telling me they're not going to honor it. Faaaaaantastic. EDIT: I've received further clarification from Seagate that apparently the drive was never meant to be sold and was intended to be used inside a an external enclosure. This of course makes no sense as like I previously stated, the drive was factory sealed. Nevertheless, be forewarned, apparently, by Seagate's own words, you're not supposed to be buying these drives. If you have any issues with them, you better hope that they appear within the Amazon 30 day return window, because chances are Seagate's going to claim these were never meant to be sold and not honor your warranty. ... show more

  • Top line drive; sketchy source...
Really hard to understand what you may actually get when you order this item. Here's what I received: Item was shipped 'naked', that is, inside a static shield envelope, covered in bubble wrap, inside a plain cardboard box. Instructions inside the box suggested I search the internet for how to install. Also stated it was not formatted. So not from the manufacturer itself. Not a terrible issue as the heads are parked for transit. The item fit into my Dell desktop just fine. Had to use the Windows Disk Management console to initialize the drive. Just a few clicks. Surprisingly, the drive was immediately recognized as NTSF format! So already formatted, as are most over-the-counter drives from the manufacturer! Also quite noisy! So not sure if this item was a return, formatted by a previous owner, or an item purchased in bulk and repackaged. If a returned item, the reason for the return is lost to me. Not likely refurbished; this would require factory opening. Perhaps used but re-formatted using factory-level software. So … seems to be working just fine … so far. Reading other reviews, seems a bit sketchy as to the source of the drives. This is a back-up drive for my system, so easily replaced if it fails. But I would recommend buying directly from the manufacturer to be sure. ... show more

  • Sort of a gray market drive
Don't expect a factory warrantied or one that is "new". Mine had a 6 month warranty that expired in 2019. I called the seller who said these were new drives puchased from Hong Kong and that they would warranty the drive for 5 years. They have been around 7 years so lets hope that is true. These drives are hard to find. Large capacity drives are now mainly made for NAS, data centers, or surveillance. I tried a Seagate EXOS and they are LOUD. Sounds like a rock in a sardine can. This drive formatted and installed fine. Runs pretty warm and slower than the exos but still fast. It's a lot of storage and Pro's are SMR not SMR. Drive is VERY quiet. * MB/s = 1,000,000 bytes/s [SATA/600 = 600,000,000 bytes/s] * KB = 1000 bytes, KiB = 1024 bytes Sequential Read (Q= 32,T= 1) : 196.073 MB/s Sequential Write (Q= 32,T= 1) : 203.668 MB/s Random Read 4KiB (Q= 8,T= 8) : 1.304 MB/s [ 318.4 IOPS] Random Write 4KiB (Q= 8,T= 8) : 1.463 MB/s [ 357.2 IOPS] Random Read 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 1.427 MB/s [ 348.4 IOPS] Random Write 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 1.659 MB/s [ 405.0 IOPS] Random Read 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 0.574 MB/s [ 140.1 IOPS] Random Write 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 1.797 MB/s [ 438.7 IOPS] Test : 1024 MiB [D: 41.6% (2436.2/5858.7 GiB)] (x3) [Interval=5 sec] Date : 2020/11/10 8:44:34 ... show more
