  • Powerful Manual "Dumb" Charger, Just What I Wanted.
Definitely not everybody needs a charger this big. I went this big because I wanted a manual charger besides my smaller "smart” charger. I also wanted one with a 200+ amp, start, setting for doing some battery rejuvenating trials of old batteries (more tinkering), as I have seen done online. This charger had what I was looking for and for its size was very reasonably priced. It does everything I want a battery charger to do. Plus, it is made by a company, Schumacher Electric, that has been in the business for over 70 years so they must be doing something right. I had one of their chargers for over 30 years before something finally broke on it. Too many battery chargers, made today, are so called "smart" chargers. That is fine for people that don't understand battery charging and just want to put the charging cables on a battery and walk away. Being an "Old Guy", I am used to the old "dumb" manual battery chargers and they definitely have advantages that the new "smart" chargers don't have. As far as I know none of the "smart" chargers will charge a completely dead battery that is below 8 or 9 volts. For reference a fully charged 12-volt battery, in good shape fully charged, should measure no less than 12.6 volts. It is considered discharged or "dead" at 10.5 volts. At that voltage a "smart" charger will recognize it and will charge it. But I have had numerous instances where a battery's voltage is too low for a "smart" charger to work. No doubt people have replaced their battery because their "smart" charger wouldn't charge it and they thought the battery was bad. A lot of times all the battery needs is a little boost in voltage, to say 10 volts, so the "smart" charger can "see" it and charge it. Here is where having a "dumb", manual, charger comes into play. Hook the battery up to it first for a while, then put the "smart" charger on it if you want to walk away. Or leave it on the "dumb" charger but you will need to be around to monitor it and should really, at a minimum, have a volt meter to check the voltage. Better yet a volt meter and a battery tester. This is obviously for the "DIYer" as I realize a lot of people don't have the time or aptitude to do this. Being an old retired guy who has tinkered with cars and motorcycles since a kid. I have both the time and the aptitude and I enjoy tinkering. ... show more

  • The last of a dying breed
This .. to my knowledge.. is the last charger worth buying, I’ll explain.. today’s chargers will not charge a dead battery, for them to change a battery it HAS to have voltage. So if your battery in your car is dead..ie interior lights/radio won’t work it won’t charge the battery.. this charger will.. if your thinking about buying this do it before it’s gone.. and your welcome ... show more

  • Updated - Not the correct information given.
Failed with false advertising right out of the gate. Got the correct model number because I verified on the box but the specs don't match what Amazon says. Advertised at 225/50/25/10 but what came was 200/40/20/10. Will work just fine but Amazon needs to fix their information stat. UPDATE Decided to remove it from the box and found the box actually displayed the wrong specs. Unit does show 225amp on the panel. Upgraded from 2 to 4 stars now until I test it. ... show more

  • Perfect condition and works as expected
I was a little nervous reading some reviews about how badly their battery charger arrived, I opted for Prime 1 day shipping because it was free to me as a Prime member. The box arrived in perfect condition and it was also a little heavier than I was expecting. I intend to use the 225 AMP mode to revive my car batteries with method I saw on YouTube. For that purpose, I think it works fine. It is advertise as a manual battery charger and it is as manual as they advertised. It's no thrill with a dial Ampere selector and a timer, that's it. The 225 AMP mode works fine and seems to continue to output the amperage as expected while the timer is running, not just 15 seconds as some other source stated. It does get a little warm and even the cable gets a little warm as well since it is outputting a significant amount of power. One thing I am not sure is that the meter only goes up to about 50 AMP, and my clamp DC multimeter also confirmed that it outputs about 40-45 AMPs while 225 AMP was selected. So maybe I misunderstand the output characteristic or somehow manufacturers have changed the scale to cheat us again. Like megabyte vs gigabyte again. I hope someone can explain that to me. I will try to post it as a question and hope someone will answer it. Overall, it's a dumb charger that's exactly what I wanted. Is it a little overpriced, maybe, but it is also a dying breed of old school equipment that don't completely rely on electronic control that can't do some cool stuffs. It can also be dangerous in people that don't have common sense, it is totally possible to overcharge your battery if you aren't careful. And that can be very dangerous with this. ... show more

  • Failed first use, bad quality control overall, dented and scuffed
I bought this charger because it looked nice online, was a manual 'dumb charger'. When I unboxed it, I noticed there was a small dent on a corner and some scuffs in the back. Also, the top plate sticker was coming off. I figured, maybe just poor handling at the factory. I called up Schumacher and asked them to send me a new top plate since the sticker was coming off. They said they would call back and never did. I forgot about calling them back to send one. Well, almost two months passed and I needed to charge a battery. I connect the charger to the wall outlet and battery and turn on. I hear a buzzing sound and the timer clicking, then all of the sudden, nothing. I also noticed the amp meter did not increase at all indicating no output current. I took my voltmeter and measured voltage, no charge voltage. The thing was dead! Brand spanking new out of the box, I was out of my return window, and Schumacher support, well, doesn't call back. I called Amazon and fortunately they still let me return it but for only 80% of the purchase price, so I had to eat $30. What a ripoff and I will never buy Schumacher again and Amazon could have been a little more forgiving and given me the full refund amount since this was the very first use! Takeways: Always test products right away just in case they need to be returned quicker because Amazon won't give a full refund unlike small mom-and-pop shops around where I live! ... show more
