All firmware and components, including Samsung's world-renowned DRAM and NAND, are produced in- house, allowing end-to-end integration for quality you can trust. Performance may vary depending on host configuration. To reach maximum read/write speeds of up to 1,050/1,000 MB/s, respectively, the host device and connection cables must support USB 3.2Gen 2 and the UASP mode must be enabled. I have an iMac 2020 27" Retina display with an internal 512 GB SSD and no way to add additional internal storage (I picked up the iMac 2020 at a too-good-to-be-true price from a friend of a friend for this reason). I've been using a SAMSUNG T7 2TB SSD for 16 months on my iMac as permanent external storage for home directories instead. Fortunately the iMac 2020 has a USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10Gb/s) port and it works as desired with the SAMSUNG's USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface. In testing I measured 850-860 MB/s (Write) and 900+ MB/s (Read) on the T7 configured as an unencrypted APFS volume on my iMac 2020; that's reasonably close to the maximum vendor-claimed 1,000 MB/s speeds. Overall system performance configured this way has been great with two caveats: 1) The iMac must be configured to mount home directory volume(s) on the external SSD at boot time or else intermittent problems occur, and 2) iCloud Keychain for home directories on external volumes stopped working with the Monterey 12.6.4 update the end of March 2023 but was restored to proper functioning in the Monterey 12.6.5 update that came out on April 10th. I *think* Apple more or less officially supports home directories on alternative volumes, but not all of the support staff are familiar with this configuration. (Before buying the SAMSUNG T7 I had attempted to build a DIY Fusion Drive using the internal SSD and an external USB rotating rust drive to replicate the pleasurable combination of SSD and rotating rust I had in my older 2014 iMac. Although this seemed possible (and appeared to build correctly), each attempt I made failed in unexpected ways when put into use. Since my family has way too much data to put us all on the 512 GB internal SSD, and I was unwilling to go back to rotating rust performance, I opted to go for an external SSD for user home directories. I ran a series of tests with the T7 2gb unit on my M2 Mac Studio and am pleased to report that it is indeed compatible with Macs, but to get the full performance out of it, you need to format it using the Mac Disk Utility app in the APFS format. Out of the box, it is formatted for Windows in the EXFAT format, which a Mac can read and write to without issue. Therefore you need to be clear about what you'll use this disk for. If you have any intention of using the disk to connect to any variety of Windows (and probably android/chromebook) or any smart tv, then you'll want to leave it formatted as EXFAT. For example, if I wanted to put movies from my Mac on the disk and connect it to my LG tv, the tv can read EXFAT but would not work with any variety of Mac formatting. However, if you plan to use this exclusively on Apple products, including iPhones and iPads, you'll very likely want to format with APFS so that you get the full speed benefit of what an SSD can offer compared to a hard drive. I tested this T7 with the EXFAT formatting and connected it directly to my Mac Studio Thunderbolt 4 port using the supplied Samsung USB C to USB C cable and got read speeds of 364mb/s and write speeds of 377mb/s. I also tested using the USB A to USB C cable and got 341 and 385mb/s speeds, so not much, if any, degradation in speed for using that cable option. After formatting to APFS and connecting the same way the speeds more than doubled to read of 812mb/s and writes of 844mb/s! My conclusion is that if you leave the T7 formatted as EXFAT then you are paying for ssd speeds but actually getting hard drive performance. Therefore, if you are thinking of buying one of these to use in a workflow that benefits from higher speeds, then the T7 is a great option. On the other hand, if you plan to use it formatted as EXFAT, then can the premium price of the ssd be justified in some other way? These test were done on the day the T7 arrived, so if any issues arise over time, I'll Update this review with any findings. ... show more

I had my fears, this would not be compatible. But it was and more. My USB is 3.0 and my rig is by now fairly old. This one external SSD has significantly upgraded my gaming experience! The real test came with Dead Island 2. It loaded swiftly by comparison to my old install and played flawlessly, with the game exiting to menu then desktop instantly at the end, where it had previously hung up. What surprised me was after a significant play time, the drive was absolutely cool to the touch! If anything would give it a work out, DI2 would. I'm transferring more of my library to this and if I could afford it, I'd replace all my drives with these Samsung miracles. Just be prepared to tweak library installs. For Steam, I needed to create new folders for Steam/Steam Library and then it let me move games. Until then it said the drive was not writeable and could not set up those files. Adding the drive in settings didn't work. Epic, which has a lousy launcher in general, was trickier and you'll need to "start" a new install of the game you are transferring, pause it, then copy over your full game, unpause. It will verify then say it's installing but it's actually recognizing your files and you'll launch with saves and all. Why Epic still makes it so hard is inexcusable. Pictures also don't even do this drive justice, when you open it and see the size, your jaw will drop. It's about time these prices come down. I remember the day of $300 250 GB internal hard drives.....SSD's are amazing but just the same, they are by now the standard progression of drives and their time of standard pricing has arrived.
