  • Works great, doesn't need permanent mounting
I have 4 kids so I'm not a noob to baby gates. That said, we do have a dog that we like to keep out of certain areas of the house, especially when guests are staying over as he has a tendency to "mark his territory" but only when people are staying with us. He isn't a pushy dog, meaning he's not going to challenge a gate or jump over it. I got this gate specifically for a few reasons: - wide opening - the opening in question is 46" and not many walkthrough gates can expand that far - it doesn't require hardmounting, meaning noting screws into the wall/walkway unless you want to (even the included doublestick pads aren't necessary) - the walkthrough feature works either way - tensioning/adjustment seems easy Installation was a breeze; there are 2 side extensions in the box, just choose your width and select the number of extensions you need (consult easy chart/assembly instructions provided), move around some of the included inserts, put in the tensioning assemblies (bolts with rubber pads on the end), put in the opening, and tension away. The trickiest part is getting the tension right on both sides of the gate such that it doesn't bow or otherwise throw the entire thing out of alignment or the latch mechanism won't line up. As I mentioned, you don't have to use the included "cups" that adhere (or screw) to the wall/jamb - the adjustment tensioning pads are rubber so they grip the wall fairly well anyway. What might be an issue for some is that the latch is a compound one and does not autolock simply by shutting the gate - it requires you to manually latch/lock it every time. So, I'm not sure I'd use this where you need an easy walktrough and relock. At the top/bottom of stairs it might be tricky as well (e.g. if you're carrying something). All in all a good gate that looks nice, was easy to install and didn't break the bank. ... show more

  • Nice sturdy gate. Still working 9 years later!
UPDATE: I have to say, it's 9 years later and this gate is still in good, working condition. I am kind of amazed that the locking mechanism is still working perfectly. It has withstood heavy, daily use, being closed the proper way and also being slammed shut quite often and it still works. Very impressed with this gate. Love this gate. We use it between hallway and kitchen area. It was easy to install, and the lock is nice and secure. Gate can be opened both ways and once you get used to the locking mechanism, it's very easy to open and lock. You can leave it all the way open if desired, or leave it semi-closed without latching it if you'll be going back and forth a few times. It is not an auto shut gate, you do have to manually lock it. We installed this sitting on top of the transition piece separating hall and kitchen area and gate has no issues swinging either way. We have a large dog,(husky-lab mix) and she is not able to jump it. Using the rubber sides, there was no damage to the wall and it fits very securely, we only needed one extension. It's very easy to adjust the tension to get a tight fit between the two walls. The walk thru gate itself is nice and wide which is good because this is a high traffic area of our home.. This gate is perfect for what we needed it for, haven't found any down side as of yet. ... show more

  • Loved it so much, we bought 3
We got an English bulldog pup just after Christmas and he pees everywhere. He is also teething, so he chews on everything he sees. Very playful, loving dog, but we needed to section off different parts of the house as to contain him a bit. The first Kate we bought on Facebook marketplace not even knowing how awesome it would be. We loved it so much that we wound up buying 2 more of the Safety 1st tall gates on Amazon. I am real particular about how things look and I think these gates look great (as great as any gate could look). They are white and blend in with the door trim nicely The gates were easy to install and are very sturdy. Our dog leans on them all the time and pushes against them. The gates don’t budge. I love that they open and close both ways swinging forward or backward. They are durable, even for a Bull Dog pup who likes to try to chew on them. The opening and closing mechanism is really awesome and easy to use. These are top-notch quality. They feel permanent not flimsy. Superb quality. I would definitely recommend. So glad we purchased these and did not cheap out. ... show more

  • Decent gate for wide spaces, difficult to open safety lock
When I bought this, I was desperate to find a gate that would fit my new wide hall. And I didn't pay attention to detail. I need the gate for pets, this one is built for children. The latch is difficult for me to use, but I have to assume its wonderful for the parents of an active toddler. No way a child could open this. I was upset about this at first, it hurts my old hands to open sometimes, but I wont blame the maker or seller for that, I should have read the description better. I did ding a star for difficulty in assembly. The instructions are minimal. They say to use the large screw to insert in the end caps to remove them. I thought the screw would screw in and grab the end caps but they don't. You really have to twerk the thing to get those caps out. The end caps on the bottom did not come out at all until I used a knife to pry them out. I felt very frustrated because I was following the instructions, and I'm very good at putting things together usually....took a long time to get those stupid end caps out, the instructions should have been clearer. But it functions, my cats can't squeeze through and they wont jump it. It sets a bit crooked since I have all of the extenders in, but its stable and does the job. I have to be honest, I hate it because of the latch and I might have to consider getting a different one. I wouldn't care except that sometimes it really does hurt my hand to open it its so tight. So if you have toddlers and want to keep them safe, this is probably an excellent choice. But for pets, try to find something with auto-close and a latch that doesn't require a lot of strength to open. ... show more

  • Plenty strong and adaptable
Works great. I wanted something that was easy for my wife to open with one hand that didn't damage your nails and with a little practice these are really easy to open. Plenty sturdy and easy to set up. The one for the top of the stairs was a simple install. I did not screw into the wall for the plastic cup, just relied on the sticky pad along with pressure to hold it in place. The main reason for sharing this post is because I couldn't find much information about retrofitting this for a wider opening and recommended. The bottom gate was a little more challenging with a wider stair opening up to the landing. The base is 48 inches which worked fine, but I had to get a little creative for the top where it's a few inches wider. On the left side I used a one by four to span the distance between the floor and the handrail, with a piece of 2 x 4 to rest up against the rail. I used a small acrylic bumper to keep rail from being damaged. A zip tie and eye hook keep that piece from sliding. On the right side the large spindle tapers so I cut some 2 inch ABS, screwed it to a piece of 2 x 4 large enough to support the gate pad, then used velcro command strips on the inside of the abs to attach it to the spindle. Painted the wood and ABS to match the stairs. And it's worked flawlessly for months. I'm sure there are several better ways but I used what I had on hand. ... show more

  • Ideal for puppies
Perfect for my puppies. I love the baby gate. It’s so natural and Aesthetic across the door. I would have never thought of using a gate if I hadn’t recently gone to the Humane Animal Society and saw how they use gates in the facility. The latch has a two step to open the door. It’s quite sturdy, and tall enough the puppies can stand up on it but can’t push it over. I have it positioned in the door jam so it doesn’t move forward or backwards. ... show more

  • Very good for under $80
We foster herding dogs for a rescue and sometimes need to keep dogs separate to keep the energy in the house in check. I did not like the idea of paying $100+ for an extra tall baby gate for the wide entry way to our kitchen. Especially considering most of these are made cheaply in China. But this one is simple, easy to install and a nice height. Our opening is 45" wide so it's nearly maxed on the width it covers. Adding all the extension pieces does give it a bit of a flimsy feel if pushing on it. So if your dogs are in the habit of pushing or standing and leaning on the gate then there may be durability issues. And that's the only reason I gave it 4 stars on sturdiness. If the bottom rail was a taller rectangular tube it might act as more of a stiffener. But as with all things with our dogs it's more about the training than the tool. So our dogs have gotten use to being separated by a pen, crate or gate through positive behavior shaping and Relaxation Protocol. My favorite things about the gate are that it can open either direction and can be stopped in either direction via the little tabs on the bottom. It also operates very quietly to let sleeping dogs and spouses lie. The sliding safety button on the top makes unlatching and latching a little fussy. I'm sure with time it would become a task relegated to muscle memory for us. But since our dogs aren't toddlers with busy little fingers, I removed the safety button on top. This makes it even simpler to operate. Removing it is easy enough if you are handy and can pay attention to how the two springs go in when they come flying out. And believe me they will so pay attention. Take out the button and the spring and store them for later if you need them, it's a reversible operation. You can add a dab of grease to the slope on the bottom latch button for smoother operation too. Do not do the above if you have children. Another tip is to rest the gate on at least 3/4" thick, or 1x, scrap lumber. The stop fingers on the bottom can catch on rugs or uneven floors when they are down if you rest the gate completely on the ground when installing. ... show more

  • WAS GREAT INITIALLY TILL... WE GOT TRAPPED
I would’ve given this product 5 stars if something didn’t happen. PRO No drilling to install and no special tools needed to install. I didn’t even need my hubby and installed it in les than 10 minutes. (mostly to read the flier and check completeness of parts) Main gate part was heavy, but can be lifted by one person. The look at pressure color (red to green) was a good feature to know if it was already installed right or not. The gate door “lock” part will be swinging (don’t remove the ziptie till last part) till you screw tight the sides and green appears then all set. The slide and press combo to release gate is good to prevent nosey small kids from opening it, even if they understand how to open (not enough strength nor dexterity) It’s a better option than our other Safety First click and remove and click back the entire gate. CON Top of stairs ok, lower stairs depends. Old houses might not be ideal for the stairs part. Need a good flat area for top and bottom, left and right sides to get installed. Unlike our basic baby gate that can be installed diagonally between a wall and the lowest stair post. After 2-4 days, the slide and press (release for gate) started becoming harder to y do with one hand. My senior mom was able to do it with two hands when it was newly installed then had a harder time opening it. We thought maybe bec she was just older. Then last 2 days of 2019, it became harder for everyone else in the house. By New Year morning, hello! Got trapped in the living room. Had to dismantle (unscrew) one side so that the gate would swing open. No amount of slide fully and press fully (two hands already used) would work! Tried so for at least 8x or so before I got frustrated to wanna throw it out! So i don’t know if it just needed some oil or WD40, I wasn’t in the mood for trying to fix it then it not be returnable and refundable. There has to be better way to keep it easy to open without getting trapped! They should tell us if we should oil it or what not and what to do if it doesn’t open and remedies because for now, although I loved it, but I am returning the dang thing. I may or may not try getting a new one. Had gotten one from the Amazon Warehouse. Also it said good as new, but there were stains in the item and some dents. P..S. Update 01-15-2020 Returned the product first week of Jan 2020 via UPS Pickup and i still do NOT have my refund! When I go to customer service on amazon to trrack staus, it always shows ERROR and click to go backto Amazon Home. WTH? Scam? It’s been two weeks! ... show more
