  • Great Product , Awesome Customer Service
We purchased the run-chicken automatic door in July 2021. Very easy to install on our coop, and from Day 1 it worked flawlessly, every day opening at dawn and closing by dark. The auto-door gave us peace of mind knowing the chickens would be safely locked in their coop protected from night time predators, and "released" in the morning for daily foraging. Unfortunately, just 8 months later, the unit has begun acting up. The door failed to open one morning, and I figured no problem, the batteries were shot. I replaced the batteries and the unit worked as designed for a few days, but then started having issues. It sometimes would not open on its own in the morning daylight, but it still closed on its own after dark. Some days, I could push the test button to get the door to open, other days there was no response at all with the test button (even after holding it down for 20+ seconds). On those days, I had to manually raise the door to let the chickens out. Even after a "manual opening" in the morning, the door would close automatically on its own after dark. I pulled and tested the new batteries, they still have a full charge, so it's not a battery issue. I've made sure the light sensor is clean/unobstructed, but the unit seems now to have a mind of its own now, sometimes functioning, sometimes not. Maybe the light sensor has a limited life and is failing? Bottom line, we've been extremely happy with the product, it worked as advertised, but for the price we were expecting a longer life before having to deal with finding a replacement. UPDATE! - Customer Service mailed us a new electronic unit at no charge. The new unit seems to be more solidly constructed then our original. With new electronics, the door is up and running again and you can count us among the very satisfied customers! ... show more

  • This door did not crush my chicks when it closed on them. Good product.
UPDATE: January 18th 2024- we had a cold spell and some rain that froze the door shut for a few days. My partner and I would carefully pour water on the sides of the door to unfreeze it, but it would freeze back by the time the door had to open or close again. After a few days of this, I thought we had broken the door because the light was no longer coming on and the motor had stopped working. We changed out the batteries which caused the light to blink different colors but didn’t get the motor going again. I called customer service before purchasing another, and they instructed me to wipe down the battery terminals with an alcohol swipe (basic maintenance) and see what happens. It’s running again like new! This is a quality product that can hold up to even the dumbest of user abuses. I was fully ready to purchase a new one because if we broke it, it would have been our fault but it seems we’re still in the clear! UPDATE: still working well in December 2023! This door looks nice and was easy to install. One of the screw heads did break off while I was trying to attach the door to the coop, which made me nervous about the quality of the rest of the door, but so far it seems to be nice and sturdy and is working as intended. I tested the door on my hand and it came down slowly yet forcefully on me which had me very nervous that it could crush one of my chicks. Well, low and behold earlier tonight two of my chicks decided they wanted to roost right in the door as it closed on them… and somehow they’re fine. I’m not really sure how it didn’t crush them since the door seemed to be VERY strong when it came down on me… but my dumb little chicks were just sleeping there with the door halfway closed on them without a care in the world. They didn’t even want to move when I came outside freaking out thinking they were dead and opened the door manually for them. So far, I’m happy with this product and I hope it continues to work as it is now without any issues. ... show more

  • Dangerous!
I'm not sure where to start. When this door works it works well. The problem is that it can't be trusted. Early on I discovered that the light sensing feature can be affected by a campfire and not just by sunrise/sunset. The literature accompanying the door and their advertising says this isn't so. I was burning some fallen branches about 30 yards from the coop and after dark the door would open and close depending on the size of the fire. I reprogramed the door to the GPS mode and had to reprogram every week or so to keep the times consistent with actual sunrise/sunset. So far these are just annoyances. Here are the two dangerous issues. I came out one morning to find a chicken who had apparently stuck it's head out of the door for a last look in the run as the door started to close. The door closed on her neck and instead of reversing it just kept her pinned tightly all night. I'm not sure if it just choked her or broke her neck but she was just as dead either way. The door would not open by pressing the button. I had to force it open. I removed and reinstalled the batteries and reprogrammed the door and watched it like a hawk for a week or so (not convenient to have to watch your automatic door) and it functioned as advertised. Recently, I went out to the coop in the morning and the door had failed to open on schedule. It was over an hour late. Here in Southeast Texas it had already started to get hot in the tin-roof coop. We had just returned from a few days out of town and I hate to think what we would have returned to had the malfunction occurred while we were away. No doubt we would have lost the entire flock. Run Chicken was not at all interested in addressing the problem. I wrote them and explained exactly what had happened. I told them the door light flashed very dimly red and rapidly and asked if this was a known issue. The batteries were fresh but I replaced them and have had another malfunction with the same rapidly flashing red light. The door is out of warranty and I was inquiring about replacing the motor section with a new T-80 at my expense. They said they "require" a video of the malfunction, a receipt for purchase of the door, and a photo of the serial number. I don't wear a bodycam so I don't have a video of the malfunction, and the other items they "require" should only be for warranty issues, which this was not. These people don't care about making their product safer and I find them impossible to deal with. Their product is dangerous junk and I have another brand on order. Use this one at your own risk. When it works, it works reasonably well, but when it fails you may have a coop full of dead birds. ... show more
