There is a piece that hold that trashbag, and when the lid sits on top of it, it pushed the piece down to add extra security to hold the trashbag in place more securely. I bought this to replace one of those stainless steel cans which proved to be difficult to clean (and which fell apart.) I like Rubbermaid products and I like this can but the lid was not attached and it was an ordeal to attach it. It has two prong type extensions which must be slotted into the can base plus a metal part on the base which works with the pedal. I was able easily to get one prong in and then the metal but getting the second prong into its hole was very difficult. It's about 1/3 of an inch and it has to go into the hole but it doesn't bend (this would make it likely to break) so you have to somehow get the prong into this hole. I ended up sitting down with the trashcan on my lap with the front facing my lap and the back facing to the sky. I managed to attach the lid. I tried other ways (the can standing, putting in one prong first etc) but this was the way I finally did it, with the can on my lap. As for the trash bag issues: I buy mine (13 gallon white with red plastic handles) from Costco. The rim of the can is 48 inches around and the bags I buy are exactly that. I managed to get the bag to fit. There's a knack to it. I put the bag in with the red plastic handles long ways. The tight fit does cause the ring to put up a bit but as the rubbish is put in and the bag weighs more this self corrects. Good luck!! ... show more

I've purchased this item a couple of times already. It's big enough for a 5 person family & the hands-free opening system with the step is a big convenience for me. The lid broke after a year or so and I just figured the kids were too rough with it & reordered another one since it meets my family's needs. The lid broke again in the same exact place as the first trash can after just a couple of weeks! It was so irritating that I took a closer look. It appears that the plastic piece (the loop) that holds the metal rod, which lifts up & opens the lid when the step on the bottom is engaged is VERY THIN. It broke without someone abusing it because it couldn't handle the weight of the lid. We went with a trash can without the hands-free system for a while, but then the little plastic pieces that stick out on the sides that actually hold the lid & allow it to open, broke & I now have a busted trash can, Which is disappointing because the trash can itself is in almost new shape. But every time someone goes to throw something out, the lid falls off & makes a lot of noise. Not buying this item again ... show more

I like black trash cans cuz they mostly disappear in a kitchen. The lid easily goes up w the peddle n goes down quietly cept for a small sound. Holds a kitchen sz trash bag perfectly.

Getting them put together properly upon receiving them, however, was not easy. There's no instructions on how to get everything situated, and I broke one beyond repair. I had ordered multiple, so I'm still able to use the rest. They work very well. I love that they hold the bag in place, and it's pretty easy to get the bags out. I bought these to keep my dog out of the trash. Mission accomplished. She hasn't figured out how to get these trash cans open, so I think they're serving their purpose. Overall, pretty good product when you get them assembled, but putting them together is a little difficult. ... show more
