  • My new favorite robot vacuum My new favorite robot vacuum
Style: Roomba 205
This is not my first robot vacuum, but it is now my favorite! I love that it doesn't have the sensor sticking out of the top. This allows it to clean under furniture without getting stuck like other models do. I'm also a fan of the compactor style so I don't have a bulky base in the middle of a room. Mapping was quiet, easy, quick & effective. I just wish iRobot had the option to delete a room or area rather than only no-go zones. I have a split level home and it maps rooms on other floors (great sensors but I don't want that on my map). I ran it on carpet that had been vacuumed with a competitive robot vacuum 2 days ago and it did a much better job than the competitor. It is a little louder but a lot more powerful. Also a big fan of the app letting me know the health of every component, taking the guess-work out of when it's time to replace them! The sleek, low-profile design paired with the suction power and effective paths make this a great robot vacuum for anyone in the market for one! ... show more

  • Stuck in Mapping loop. Or Update loop. Totally Dead
Style: Roomba 205
Well I hate to write a bad review for a product but unfortunately this is getting one. Unboxing was piece of cake: open box, take out roomba, charge cord and base. Plug in the charger base, pop on the spin brush, place robot on charger base. It talks to you and tells you to set up robot. Downloaded NEW roomba app as the older app only works for the older robots (I have two other Roombas, an S9+ and J6). Anyways, set up is easy, connect to network and it’s now ready to map my house. Gets to mapping and does my large space pretty quickly. Yay! Seems to be great. So let’s do cleaning now - nope. Wants to map again. Okay, so now let’s do cleaning, nope, again it wants to do a map. Stuck in a loop of making a map. Never cleaned a dang thing. This is day one, Over it. Packing it up and returning. The vacuum might be great but who would know if the software that runs it is poor? July 2025 UPDATE Changed from one star to 3 stars. Why??? Okay so I never got around to packing this thing up and shipping it out. Tried many hours later after I wrote the original review to get roomba to clean something and lo and behold it did eventually clean and did a passable job. Mind you my old S9+ was fantastic at cleaning (when she wasn’t on vacay as I like to put it). The old girl really handled the dog hair from two German shepherds. The old S9+ is pretty much on permanent vacay now though she will still clean (and do a stunning job) once in a blue moon. So back onto this newer one. I have found that she has 3 clean modes : light clean, normal clean, and deep clean. She runs pretty quiet on the lowest level however the loudness increases with each increased level. Light clean might work for someone but I need at least normal clean and if there’s any dog hair shedding going on - only the deep clean gets the hair up. Deeper cleaning = noisier and more battery use. This thing has no separate vaccum bag, the debris collects in the roomba itself which is a nice improvement over the older models with the suction with bag base. I empty it every few runs, not because it’s full but because well, it’s dirt and dog hair and I don’t want mold or bacteria growing in there. Pretty easy to dump out, just make sure to not breathe in what you’re dumping. In the two months I’ve had this, it’s needed software updates twice and both times were not smooth. I had to hit the on/off button, hit the home button, unplug the device and replug it in. Take it off the base and replace it on the base - essentially anything to attempt to get it get out of being stuck in update mode for days at a time. To be fair the old Roomba had that same annoying problem. Many times iRoomba S9+ said there was no internet - but internet is high speed and worked fine on all other devices. The app still sucks but I’m getting used to it. I guess for around $200, at least I’m not doing the vacuuming myself. But having to cajole it into working is a pain. I hate that my house is dirty, guests are coming and dang roomba is on vacay. It works however reliability is just not there. At least not for the bot unit that was shipped to me. Maybe yours will function better? Would I buy it again…. Hmmm…. Jury is still out on that. Maybe if the app gets better and the stuck in update issue is resolved. I’ll stop by again and update this later. August 2025 update Well there was some kind of update that was supposed to happen at the end of August. So my robot has been stuck in update mode which means it won’t vacuum. I’ve rebooted from the app and from the bot several times. The help support pages recommends removing battery - did that. Pain in the … to unplug then replug was challenging unless you have child like fingers. Still no joy. Tried reset again from app and not. Next day, Sept 1st 2025 doesn’t even show power is on. Seems to be a brick. Now it should be zero stars. Cajoling it to work for what nearly 3 months and now totally dead. That’s 270 div 3 is $90 a month and even then I ran her maybe 3-4 times in a given month. Like I said she’s dead. Total waste of $270. Look elsewhere. ... show more

  • A Great Upgrade for My Parents — Low Maintenance and Reliable
Style: Roomba 205
This is the second Roomba I’ve purchased, this time for my parents, and it’s been totally worth it. They’re elderly and appreciate that the Roomba doesn’t need to be emptied often — that’s a huge plus for them. The dust compactor feature really makes a difference compared to their older model; it can go several cleanings before needing attention. It’s quiet, navigates well around furniture, and doesn’t get stuck as much as the older versions did. The setup was straightforward, and I love that I can check in or schedule cleanings for them through the app when I visit. It even does a surprisingly good job picking up pet hair and crumbs on both hardwood floors and carpets. If you’re buying for someone who values ease of use and minimal maintenance, this is a fantastic choice. It’s made my parents’ daily routine a little easier. ... show more

  • Good But Needs Work Good But Needs Work
Style: Roomba 205
I want to preface this review with some background. I have had robots in my home before including floor care and multiple lawn mowers. I also develop robots for hospital pharmacies. TLDR: This is my first robot vacuum and I really wanted to love it. It's not as amazing as I was hoping but it's definitely an adequate cleaning machine. The Roomba 205vac is an affordable robot that will get the job done as long as your can live with some limitations. Our Home: Traditional 2-story home built in 1989 with hardwood flooring throughout the main floor. Initial Setup: After unboxing, I plugged the charger into an outlet in the corner of the dining room. I set the robot on the charger but there's no charging indicator light so it was hard to tell if I had positioned it correctly. A minor annoyance. I tried to turn it on hoping there was enough residual charge in the battery knowing that lithium batteries are not supposed to be in storage completely drained. It did not power on after several attempts so I let it charge for about 30 minutes while we ate dinner. Afterward, I was able to turn it on and connect the iRobot Home app. The setup was simple as was getting wifi configured and the firmware update installed. When I started the mapping process, the robot starting spinning in place on top of the charger and would not stop until I pressed the Home button and physically placed it back on the charger. That was definitely very odd. I started the mapping again and this time it worked fine. It wandered around the house and created a pretty accurate map that I could see on the app. Then it returned to the charging station. Cleaning: The few cleanings I have done have been adequate. Nothing spectacular but the edge brush was very nice to get the edges and corners clean. It is quite loud while it's working, which is louder than I had expected. Maybe my expectations were skewed by how quiet my robot mowers are. It was about the same volume as a manual stick vacuum, which, is too loud to have running while I work or while people sleep. Otherwise, the floor is clean. It did get stuck 2 times. Once it tried to climb up a USB cord dangling from my desk and the second it couldn't figure out how to get out from under my desk chair. Overall Impression: The Roomba 205vac is inexpensive and effective. It lacks some of the intelligence I would want in a truly capable robot vacuum but it's good for the price. ... show more

  • The Set It and Forget it Vac... At least for up to 60 Days!
Style: Roomba 205
So I’ve been trying out this Roomba 205 for a bit and I decided to finally pull the trigger. One of the nice surprises that grabbed me right away was how clean the map looked after doing it's setup. My last robo vac didn’t have LiDAR so I was used to these weird sketchy outlines that kinda guessed where my walls were. This one did a full lap and the map looked like I drew it myself. Doors, hallways, corners, all super accurate. I didn’t have to babysit it or do a bunch of remapping which was nice. The other thing I really wanted to talk about is the dust compactor setup. This is probably the main reason I was interested in it. Instead of constantly buying those bags and dealing with an extra dock, it packs everything right in the bin. I just dump it in my garbage and keep it moving. Feels way more convenient and I’m not thinking about bag replacements which is great long term. It does say that it can keep things held down for up to 60 days before you have to empty it but even if it was a 1/3rd of the time, I'm much happier about this arrangement. The app also ended up being a big plus for me. I like that I can set my schedule for the week and mix it up. I’ve got one heavy clean day where I turn the power up and let it do a deep run, then the rest of the week I just have it do quick passes so it keeps things fresh without taking forever. Those shorter ones finish pretty fast so I don’t feel like I have to plan around the robot running all day. Floor clutter still matters so if I leave stuff around it can still get stuck, but with how well it maps and the way I set the schedule, it fits into my routine pretty easy. Overall, it’s been a pretty awesome upgrade and I really like having that compacting bin feature since it just keeps things simple. ... show more

  • This product is a mess.
Style: Roomba 205
I like the idea of this product. This product should be absolutely phenomenal in theory. The execution is a disaster. The box arrived without instructions. There's a QR code you're supposed to scan in order to download an app to get this thing to work. FAIL number one. The app has all sorts of tracking permissions and location permissions that basically mean iRobot has access to your metadata at any time. FAIL number two. This thing takes a LiDAR map of your house and stores your floorplan on a server somewhere. Though you can, allegedly, delete your account and all the data that goes with it. This should have a local blue tooth connection to your smart phone. NOT A WIFI CONNECTION. This is an insecure intrusion point for someone to access your home network and any device that may also be on the same network. FAIL number 3. The setup process was a disaster. My robot consistently lost connection to the internet and I had to repeatedly factory reset a brand new device. It also repeatedly failed to download the mandatory firmware update that would make it function by default. BY DEFAULT the child lock is turned on and you cannot use the power button to run your roomba right out of the box. You can only turn this feature off in the app. Though I could have a defective wifi card. FAIL NUMBER 4. The robot gets confused sometimes. It has lost connection to the home portal twice and I've had to go retrieve it and hit the home button to make it reconnect (again, not something you can do unless you have turned off child lock). FAIL number 5. It cleans pretty well, as far as I can tell. I do not know if the dust compactor function works as described but it may be true. I can update my review in a few weeks. WIN number 1. Overall, the concept should be awesome. LiDAR technology that actively scans for obstacles and prevents your vacuum from bashing into things? Yes, please! The execution needs to be completely refactored. I actually have the old version of the roomba and I think I like that one better. I could just open the box, charge the device, and press the power button to get it to work. No app, no child lock, no mandatory firmware update, no wifi, no security issues. It just banged into stuff and got stuck sometimes. Which was kind of annoying, but then, so was my experience with this roomba. This roomba also ate the cord to the docking station. Which I can say my old roomba has never done. 🤣 ... show more

  • AMAZING LITTLE HELPER!!
Style: Roomba 205
Just received my roomba 205 dust compactor for my second floor home. Decided to go with the roomba 205 for its sleek and smart technology design. First off it’s a major maintenance win with its dust compactor feature. Besides it’s being super easy to start and assemble, the dust compactor feature is extremely useful as it holds a large volume and compresses debris internally. It also has a strong cleaning performance. Not only do I have both hardwood floors and carpets in my home, I also have an inside dog who sheds a lot. I was very pleased that the roomba picked up a wide range of debris that included pet hair, dust, and dirt, with no issues whatsoever. Also after mapping out your home, the roomba is completely systematic that returns back reliably to the base each and every time. The charging base is extremely compact with a smaller footprint, meaning that it doesn’t need a huge auto emptying dock with a bagged system. Overall, the roomba 205 runs quickly and efficiently with extreme ease and zero issues. It is very reliable and works perfectly with day to day use. And with fewer trips to the trash and less dust stirred, this vacuum wins in overall maintenance reduction. I highly recommend! ... show more

  • Awful
Style: Roomba 205
AWFUL PRODUCT, DO NOT BUY!! If I could give zero stars I would. Only owned it for 40 days and will not communicate with app at all! From day one it gave me connection issues. I finally got app working for a few weeks, which wasn't a smooth process. It constantly went offline for no reason. I went through the routine several times with customer service: manufacturer reset, reset wifi, refresh app, battery, blah-blah...nothing worked. I have my online chat saved with customer service admitting that there IS AN APP MALFUNCTION and they told me I have to wait for an app update to be available, but, could not tell me when that would be. I can only use it by starting it from the vacuum, which renders it useless for me. My entire house does not need to be vacuumed each use. And the battery/battery life is a joke. Has to recharge after cleaning 3 medium sized rooms. Plus, the recharging takes forever. For being IRobot's "new" model it's clunky, horrible battery life, noisy, and taller than other brands. Even though I'm past refund/return window, by only 10 days, I requested one. Do yourself a favor and do not buy. I'm going back to the other brand I had before this. ... show more
