  • This Reolink Security System is All About the App
Short Version: For my money, this Reolink 5MP security system is the absolute best in its class. Installation and setup are quick and easy, and the image quality is crisp and sharp day or night. But it's the outstanding phone and tablet apps that separate this system from the rest of the field. Reolink clearly put a lot of thought into app functionality, and it pays off. Long Version: This was actually the second 5MP security system I bought to replace my aging Q-See 720P system. Unfortunately, the first system I bought (ZOSI) was crippled by a really poor phone app. Since I usually live-view or playback when I'm away from home, the app is a crucial component. After returning the ZOSI system, I did a lot more homework, including watching a number of YouTube videos. The Reolink app looked to have the best functionality and ease of use, so that's the system I chose. Installation was straightforward. This is a PoE (Power over Ethernet) system, so I used my existing BNC cables to pull the new CAT5 cables. I made up a plywood drill guide to accurately drill the screw and cable holes in my soffits. This is one improvement I could suggest: I wish Reolink would provide a molded plastic drill template, as this would make camera mounting easier. With the cameras installed and the CAT5 cables in place, all that's left is to hook up the NVR. Initial programming could hardly be easier - far more user-friendly than my old Q-See system. Last step was installing the apps on my phone and tablet, and this too was a snap, with a QR scan taking care of most of the process. There's also a Windows client that lets me view and control the system from my laptop. The phone app is excellent. On opening the app, it automatically goes to your most recent view. This is great, as I most often check the camera at my front door to look for packages when I'm away, or to see who's at the door before deciding whether to answer. To save bandwidth, the phone app view is medium-res, but there's a cool feature called "Clip" that gives you a high-res closeup you can drag and zoom around the overall view. Rotate your phone, and the view instantly switches to full-screen. The playback feature is also excellent. It's quick and easy to navigate to the time period you want to replay. Simply tap the date and then select the time block (the recordings are saved in roughly 1-hour blocks). Drag the slider to find the exact period you want to replay, then tap the camera icon for a still photo or the movie icon to start recording video. I do wish there was a 30 second skip forward/back option, as this would make finding the exact moment of interest a little easier. Photos and videos are saved to local storage, but you can also set up a cloud account and have them upload automatically. The app also supports remote control PTZ (pan/tilt/zoom) cameras if you decide to add one or more to your system. The system comes with 4 cameras, but the NVR supports up to 8, so you have room to upgrade. The system also supports push alerts to your phone. You can choose which cameras to send alerts and choose the portions of their fields of view to ignore so as to reduce false alarms. The motion detection is very sensitive, so I'd recommend selecting only the key ares, like your front steps and mailbox lid. Alerts are almost instantaneous. Finally some comments on the Windows Client: This too is a useful tool, as when working from home I can keep it running in the background and quickly see who's at the door. Because my laptop is on the same router as the NVR, live view is much sharper than on my phone. The client also supports closeup "Clips" for getting a sharper view of some object of interest. I would add that Reolink's website is excellent, with regularly updated setup how-tos and support FAQs, and their tech support staff are fast and efficient in replying to questions. All in all, this security system has met or exceeded nearly all my wishes and expectations. ... show more

  • A great security system for anyone!
The media could not be loaded. I've waited 4 months to review this system, making sure I was comfortable enough with the different features and interfaces, and can honestly say I couldn't be happier with a camera security system! I began hunting after a few things had been stolen off my porch and driveway (including my daughter's bike), but the last straw was a few packages that had gone missing with gifts for Christmas. I searched through a few different bundles and brands, and for the price couldn't pass up this one, as it had everything I wanted - at a great price - from a reputable company. Starting with installation: I'll mention that I'm by no means a professional, but it went as smoothly as I'd hoped and I had everything up and running in two days (it would've been one, but the temperature being in the teens and short daylight made it difficult to work on for long). The PoE is a perfect solution for a lack of outlets where I needed them, and thanks to the placement of my NVR only a single hole was needed to route all of the cabling. Speaking of the cables, the cords included were plenty long enough for my usage - and then some! Only the cable between the router and NVR was a bit too short, and again that was down to the placement and where I wanted the system installed. Mounting the cameras was simple, and I didn't even need the guides included for screws. The only thing not included in the kit that i needed were some zip ties and hammer-in cable guides, which may not be neccessary for everyone depending on your set up. Using the app, it was easy to adjust the cameras to where I wanted while looking at the feeds in one hand on my phone... By the time everything was put together, you wouldn't be able to tell it wasn't done by a professional! Initial Setup: I had already tested the NVR and cameras before installing, just to avoid issues later on, and following the full install everything went just as smoothly. The PoE makes everything plug-and-play, and the on screen set up guide is both streamlined for beginners while allowing for more advanced options to those familiar with NVR security systems. The Android app and PC applications are just as simple to install and use - once connected to the internet the camera streams instantly connect with no set up needed, and can then be customized a ridiculous amount from either PC, phone, or the NVR itself (connected to a monitor). The motion sensing and notification settings are super easy to figure out, and there are constantly new updates that provide even more settings. I haven't used the SD card features of the cameras since everything I need is already included in the apps, but it's nice to know the other options are available if needed. Usage: With those same apps, it's just as easy to pull clips either from a specific time, or sorted by motion triggered alarm. The images themselves are as clear as I could hope for - with a steady framerate and impressive zoom quality - and faces are easy to make out. The built in microphone is top-notch, and was a nice surprise included with the 5mp bullet cams. Like the rest of the features, clips and playback can be accessed from the NVR, PC, or mobile device; and can be saved for later playback if needed. I was nervous at first with purchasing an NVR that's locked to a single manufacturer, but with all of the use I've had and support available I don't think I'll be purchasing another companies cameras any time soon! The only issue I've had throughout the time I've had the system is the waterproof ethernet covers, which I'm not sure I installed correctly, and the articles provided show something slightly different than what I was provided. There've been no problems despite this, and since the cameras are installed under a porch I don't foresee any problems with water on the horizon. My biggest complaint would be the fact that not even a week after installing the system I had another package go missing... Once I reviewed the footage, furious and hoping to finally catch the porch pirate that prompted my protective purchase, I found the mail woman had actually stuck it between my side doors. That in itself wasn't a problem, but since I rarely use that entrance I had overlooked the delivery. Imagine my surprise when I opened the door to find not only the missing package, but the packages from a week before that I had thought stolen before I got the cameras! I've included a screenshot of the mobile app to show some of the interface and quality, as well as a video I clipped after a snowman in my yard had fallen (and I was curious to see its time of death). Overall, I'm more than satisfied - and will go thorugh Reolink in the future for more security! ... show more
