  • Cost Effective If You Have to Clean Your Coop Every Two Weeks w/Pine Shavings
UPDATE TO 5 STARS I'm giving this product five stars after not being able to buy another bag I tried a different type of hemp and it was a fail. Now I know why it is hard to keep in stock. It really works at sucking up moisture. It's been weeks since I put down in my coop and there is no odor. I do spot clean up every morning cuz I don't want my chickens sitting in their own filth. They did nest it in at first as I didn't think they would use their coop roost. Now that the roost is down at night they sit on it. I have two trays filled with hemp underneath the roosts to catch their waste. I have 5 - 7 week old pullets. Their coop (w/o the run) is 7ftw x 9ftl x 6fth. They are big girls. If I clean the coop every other day the hemp last 8-10 WEEKS with 2 bags. They do not yet have a side yard or ability to free range. I do not do the deep bedding method. 2 bags gives me 2.5-3 inches of bedding. 2 bags of hemp is $152 \ 10 weeks $15. With pine shavings I have to clean the coop out completely after 2 weeks because of the smell. That's with spot cleaning it every other day. I need 2.5 bags of pine shavings $22 \ 2 = $11. If you break the cost down based upon total clean out it is a reasonable price and I like that I don't have to clean out the coop every other week using hemp. I also like the hemp because we live in a rural area and this keeps mites, ants, ticks and other bugs out of their coop. I gave it four stars because of the price. I don't understand why this is so expensive but when you break down the usage cost it's not so bad and the hemp comes from and is packaged in America ... show more

  • Coop Cleaning Game Changer!
Coop Cleaning Game Changer! I've had chickens for 3 years. I have had only up to 4 hens at a time. My coop isn't large. I started off with wood shavings for the coop. I needed something easier to scoop the poop, and not hold on to moisture when it rained. I tried construction sand. It worked for a while, but when it rained and got wet, it turned gross. In the winter if it got wet, it would freeze. Enter HEMP bedding. Yes it's more expensive than the other two items I mentioned, but it's worth every penny. It's SOOOO easy to scoop the poop, and it doesn't hold odor at all so far. It's super easy to spread and take out of the bag (wood shavings were so tightly compressed in the bag it was difficult to take out what I needed). It dries pretty quickly when it gets wet. The texture is great for the girls. I even caught one of them using the bedding for a dust bath. They love it. I'm am going to keep buying hemp for my coop. ... show more

  • Absorbent, odorless and dustless
This is the best bedding bar none. We ran out and had to quickly buy some locally, the local bedding doesn’t even compare. This is the right size for chicks to scratch, doesn’t kick up dust, and we don’t have to change it daily because it’s more absorbent. I’m very happy with this bedding. My daughter went online and ordered two more because it’s that good. You won’t be disappointed. It holds the moisture, is easy to use and the chicks prefer it. ... show more

  • Hemp Quality
Great quality hemp. Very clean and soft. Great for nesting boxes, inside the coop, and in the brooders. I’ve been using hemp for several years and this is my new favorite brand!

  • Good for chicks
This is the first time I’ve used hemp bedding and I like it better than pine shavings etc. However, It is very expensive for something that will be pooped on and thrown away! Since the chicks are living in my laundry room I wanted a low dust, low mess product. The full bag has lasted me a month with 6 chicks in a puppy play pen style brooder enclosure doing deep litter throughout the week, each day adding a new layer of bedding, and on the weekends dumping it all out in the yard. I am willing to try a new brand because I do have dust on all the surfaces after 4 weeks. Not sure if there is anything better tho. ... show more

  • Great Product + Price
I was using another well known brand and had no complaints, other then pricing. This is about $13 cheaper and is the same size. $13 isn't much savings but when you calculate that I go through about 6 of these a year... that's $78 in savings. If you've not used hemp and the deep liter method you have to try it. It works amazing. It helps keep the chickens warm in the winter because it decomposes naturally. You never have to clean it out except once a year and then straight into the compost bin (and it's mostly composted by then). You just add a little bit every month or two (I throw it on top and then rake it in a bit). It allows the chicken droppings to decompose naturally which is great for your garden and easier on maintenance. It also keeps the smell down a lot since it's naturally decomposing. And as I said in the winter it'll add a LITTLE heat (not a lot) from the decomposing method AND since you have a thick layer that helps keep the cold from coming up from the bottom of your coop. So it's great all around. ... show more
