  • I was very happy. Drove 940 miles the first day
Installed it onto a 2011 Kia Soul and drove 1,350 miles from New York to South Florida. We were in and out of rain for about %40 of the trip. I checked the straps after the first 200 miles and it needed no adjustments....I was very happy. Drove 940 miles the first day, stayed in Georgia overnight and in the morning had to retighten most of the straps before heading out. Arrived in Florida, with both bikes and rack intact and straps held nicely. I read a number of reviews and most everyone had issues with the clips and pads scratching or damaging the paint on the car. We had no issues in this regard because I covered the clips on all of the straps the fingertips of a rubber glove and secured them with rubber bands. For the pads I cleaned both surfaces ( the car and the pad) then wrapped the pad with some rags I had around the house cutting them into squares and doubling them over and again using rubber bands secured them to the pads. See the photo's for reference. All in all, I would give this bike rack an 8.5 out of 10. If the Manufacturer rubber coated the clips and provided felt padding for the pads I would have given a 10 out of 10. ... show more

  • All in all this thing works great! Minor hiccups here and there but if you ...
I bought this cause I needed a way to move across the country with my bike. All in all this thing works great! Minor hiccups here and there but if you are looking for a cheap solution for relocation or an every day road trip carrier, look no further. Pros: - Well made & Sturdy - This actually surprised me. At the price I was expecting cheap hollow metal tubing and the like but everything is well made and appears to be built to last. - Easy to install - After a small learning curve this thing can easily get installed in under 2min. - Quick lock rubber straps are great. - Locks in well and doesnt rock about. Cons: - The clips that stabilize the rig are bare metal and will easily make quick work of your car's paint. Take an extra 5min before installing to cover the clips with some tape or foam. - The nylon straps do loosen up some on long road trips. Re tighten every 100-150 miles just to be safe. - This will obstruct your license plate. I made it across the whole country without incident but there is that small chance a cop might ding you for it. (Alternatively you can get a temp copy of your plate made and have that in your window or attached to the rig itself to avoid the problem completely) ... show more

  • Total Failure!
Took this out for its first road trip (unfortunately more than 30 days after purchase) and it completely failed - on the interstate! The only reason I didn't completely lose my bikes was some kind passerbyes waved me down. You can see in the photos that the quick release latch that is supposed to make it simple to store also made it simple to completely collapse during transport. You can see the gash in the hole where the metal peg is supposed to stay. The upper support bar popped out of its housing while I was driving, dropping the bikes several feet and causing my wife's rear tire to hit the ground destroying the tire and inner tube. In addition, with the extra weight of the bikes in that position, two of the rubber straps ripped. And now that I am back in town, there is no option for me to contact customer service here, because my trip occurred more than 30 days after purchase (less than 60 days). *Edit* Upon speaking with Customer Service, they have decided to keep my money despite the manufacturer's defect, because my van was not on the approved vehicle list (which was not the cause of the failure). Avoid Allen Sports! I would not purchase again! ... show more

  • Tight attachment
This is a solid rack. the straps secure tightly and the metal hooks don't seem to scratch the finish on my car where they attach to the hatchback. I took the extra step of adding a thin rubber patch to the contact areas where the hooks contact the painted surfaces. I used bike tire patches and rubber cemented them to the hooks. I suppose cut squares of scrap bike tire would work as well. I find that this allows an even more secure attachment. I can tighten the straps without fear of the hooks sliding or scratching. I did this for peace of mind and I think it makes for a tighter grip. The rack secures the two bikes nicely at highway speeds and removing/installing the rack takes just a few minutes once you get used to it. ... show more

  • The rubber straps for this product is a risk
I recently bought my Allen bicycle support 3 days ago, on the first trip the rubber straps suffer damage its unacceptable, thanks God this didn't have major incidents, however its a security risk for this product, please see the pictures and evaluate by yourself.

  • Very solid design...A+. Be careful, see my review.
This rack is very well designed, lightweight, durable, and solid. The only problem is that you need to make sure you find a good way to mount it because these new cars have a lot of plastic trim in places that the hooks, feet, and/ or straps go and that is not good for your car. I highly suggest getting the thin rubber paint protectors that go in the hooks, as well as some padding to put under the straps so they don’t scratch your car. Make sure you thoroughly clean the car and the feet/hooks of all the dirt because things will rub. Also you need to put some tough closed-cell foam padding where the bikes will be pulled tight against each other and the rack so they don’t scratch and rub. ... show more
