I would give this bike rack a 4.5 out of 5 but since there are no half star rating, I'm bumping it up to a 5. Pros: - It comes pre-assembled so you can take it out of the box and install it and be on your way within 30 minutes. It does take some time to figure out where to place the bike rack, but once you've figured it out, its an easy 10-15 minutes to install and attach your bike. Pretty simple! - The product overall is well made - it's sturdy and it feels like it will last. - We were able to fit 4 bikes on the rack without any issues - 2 Fat Tire bikes and 2 mountain bikes - we rotated the handles so they bikes were able to be nestled together. - It is EASY to use - one person can install this without too much trouble & taking the bikes off the rack was a breeze (as far as putting the bikes on - see my comment in the Cons). - I didn't feel as if my jeep was weighted down with this bike rack - even with the weight of the rack and 4 bikes. I felt pretty comfortable driving with it - there was minimal swinging/creaking during our drive. We have yet to take it on a long road trip - You can use this rack on multiple vehicles so it's not restricted to just one car - this is a huge plus! Cons: - As others have stated the metal clips were concerning but I bought pads for $10 and although they weren't the best - they did protect my SUV. I'm going to try other hacks mentioned for the next trip. - You CANNOT open your trunk while this is in use, so if you need access to your trunk you will need to remove the rack and replace the rack - If mounting on an SUV (I have a Jeep Cherokee) it sits rather high so if you're small like me, you're lifting the bikes above your head to place it on the rack - I have a carbon fiber bike and it wasn't that bad, my boyfriend's bike however, i was unable to lift up without his help. Tip: - You still need to make sure you have additional bungees/zip cords to tie up the extra strap lengths so they aren't dragging on the ground and to secure your bikes together so they don't bounce into each other. We did forget to bungee the bikes after our last trail ride because we were in a hurry to get home and surprisingly the bikes were secure and did not bounce too much - but better safe than sorry, it'd be a shame to have your bikes rubbing on each other ruining the frame. - The bottom clips need to be inserted into the jam of the bottom of the trunk and that wasn't very clear - it made me nervous but once we figured it out, it was pretty simple and stayed secure. - Make sure you bring a lock and secure your bikes, it does not have a security feature included on the rack - we just used our regular locks and secured the bikes to each other AND the rack - so if someone really wanted our bikes, they'd either have to have the materials to cut through the locks or they'd have to try and steal the whole thing. For the price, the pros totally outweigh the cons. This bike rack is a great value and does the job well. Will take pictures to post the next time we use the rack. ... show more

Great three-bike rack - 1000 miles at 70 mph no problem!

I bought this rack for a 1000 mile road trip from Florida to Virginia for the TransAm and it didn't disappoint. I have previously owned a cheap and cheerful Bell two-bike rack that did the job but it was not as well constructed or as stable as this rack. I had three Specialized hybrids on the rack (1x large, 1x medium & 1x small frame) and it worked a treat on the trunk of a Nissan '17 Altima rental. All three bikes had rear pannier racks (one also with a front fork rack), I took the pedals off to ensure fit and that so that the frames wouldn't scratch, and the seats off to reduce the weight and windage. Windy and rainy the whole way up but the rack had no problems, even considering it was running at about 90% of its 100lb rating. A few white-knuckle moments for me at 70-ish Mph going over bumps coming off of bridges on the I-70, but the rack didn't budge. I had to re-tighten the sidestraps once (about 1/16") after about 200 miles when I detected a slight left to right wobble starting, but it is to be expected with a new rack with straps that have yet to stretch and I had heaps of notice in the rear-view mirror. No Requirement to adjust the top and bottom (elasticised) straps. I used some bungees to ensure that the wheels stayed tight together and some old neoprene taped on to three or four points across three bikes where I thought they may rub on such a long journey. I like the rubber straps used to keep the bikes in the frame over the velcro on my last rack. The inner bike was well clear of the trunk and rear bar of the Altima. I read some reviews critical of how hard it is to fit three bikes onto the frame, but in reality it's a breeze (alternate them front to rear) and if you're not prepared to spend five minutes taking off the pedals you deserve to get your car or bike scratched! I see how if you used it all the time it could possibly wear the contact points on the paint of the trunk, and I would address this with some rubber (maybe old inner tube?) in between the mounting strap hooks and the trunk. Great rack for the price (even better for me as I bought it as a Warehouse Deal!) and I highly recommend it for those who can't have or don't want a permanent rack and need to move three bikes. ... show more

1000 mile road trip, no problems

I bought this just before moving from the Bay Area of California to Seattle. My car was packed so the bike was going to have to go on the back. I have a fairly heavy bike -- it's a women's Schwinn Jaguar, which is more like a beach cruiser type frame, but with 10 speeds. I was a little paranoid about it falling off or damaging my car after reading some reviews, so I read the instructions carefully and took tips from others. I did the following things, which helped my peace of mind, and prevented damage to my car, the bike, or other's cars: 1. I did a practice run putting it on a few days before the trip, making sure the straps were secure and I was confident installing it. It took about 15 minutes the first time, and only 3 minutes the 2nd time. 2. The metal hooks that go on the sides definitely might have damaged the paint of my car, so I wrapped them in electrical tape, which is what some other reviewers suggested. It worked very well, and my car has no damage. 3. I stopped after the first mile to tighten the straps. I really put my back into it and made sure they were secure. I stopped every two hours to use the restroom and checked the straps each time. I had to tighten them twice! The jiggling of the bike had caused them to loosen a bit, because the hooks slid around making the straps looser. So I'm glad I stopped to check. They weren't terribly loose, and the bike was still secure, but at speeds of 70 MPH I didn't want any accidents. 4. I cleaned the rubber stoppers and wiped my car off before putting it on to make sure no dirt was there to damage the paint. I also put some tissues down between the rubber stoppers and my car as an added layer of protection. No damage. 5. I used the excess straps to secure my bikes wheels, and to prevent the handlebars from turning while driving, and I made sure the pedals weren't going to touch my paint. 6. I bought the Allen adapter bar for the women's frame style bike. Apparently with this bike rack I didn't need it, but I wanted to get it just in case, to make sure the bike was able to be weighted evenly and not tilted at all. I'm glad I got it. It added some weight, since the bar is heavy metal, but it kept my bike centered and not askew. So, all those things, and by mile 400 I was feeling pretty confident. I would totally use this again for a road trip. It felt safe and secure, did the job, and didn't damage my vehicle. It will also be useful for across-town trips. Recommend! I only give it 4 stars because I had to wrap the metal hooks in tape in order to make sure it didn't hurt my paint job. ... show more

Quality, economical choice for transporting your bikes

Right out of the box I knew I had made the right decision when I purchased this bike rack. First of all, it is very solid and the only assembly involved was folding it out and locking it in to place, which took about 30 seconds and no directions. Literally 5 minutes later and it was mounted on my vehicle and ready to put the bikes on. All without the use of a manual, which is a huge plus in my book! There is a bit of a learning curve when placing bikes on, but that is to be expected with any bike rack. I was able to place bikes from a large women's beach cruiser to a small 16" girl's bike with training wheels without any issues. You do need put the heaviest/largest bikes on first, closest to the trunk and the smallest/lightest on the outside. In response to some other reviews about damage...There are rubber protectors on the metal pieces that actually touch the vehicle, so I did not have any scratching of paint or damage in any way at all. I am not sure how rubber is taking paint of of a vehicle, this was not my experience at all. I have used this bike rack several times with one bike-four bikes and it is very sturdy and secure. I have drove it up and down my very rough, bumpy, gravel driveway and there has not been any issue with it coming loose. If I can take it up and down this driveway packed full of bikes, I would trust it to hold through just about any situation. The straps stay tight and I trust the integrity of the bike rack. The rubber pieces that hold the bikes onto the rack are very secure. All of the elements of the rack seem to be quality materials that will last for a long time. The rack is super easy to remove if needed. I can load it on or off in a minute or two no problem. You can also leave it attached to the vehicle without bikes if you would like. But, I found it is not a good idea to open the trunk with it attached. It can easily fall off while the trunk is open, since you have to remove some of the straps to open it. I would definitely recommend this rack. It is a quality product, very functional and one of my best purchases recently. Do check the Allen Sports website for the chart to see if it is compatible with your vehicle before purchasing! Just completed a 4,000+ mile road trip with this thing and I have no complaints. Easy on and off. Did had to adjust a couple times early in the trip but once it was good I was set. Make sure your car is on the list. If worried about scratches then get the silicone pads.

Arms to small to support two bikes; tie-downs did not stay tied

I have two issues with this roof rack. 1a. I mounted our two bikes onto it and went for a drive. Bikes came loose from 3 of 4 rubber tie-downs. I don't think I was fastening the tie-downs wrong. Tie-downs attach with a rubber button, which is not nearly as secure as the method my previous Saris racks used. Outer bike didn't fall of the car because: 1b. The arms are not long enough to easily hold two bikes. I have two road bikes (27 and 24 inch tires, drop handle-bars). So bikes are thin. But the rubber support plates for the outer bike were too close to the inner bike. The frame would fit, but pedals and handlebars clashed over space. Yes, I tried alternating direction of bikes. I we eventually able to get outer bike onto rack and tied down, but bikes were somewhat interlacecd. On the upside, this is why outer bike didn't fall off of car when both its tie-downs became frree--the inner bike was holding it in place. 2. I bought this bike rack as I recently traded in my Sienna (with a trailer-hitch) for a 2024 Honda CRV (without a trailer-hitch). So I needed a replacement rack. Amazon page says rack works with most SUVs and (in small print) suggest checking the database on Allen's website for specific recommendation. I admit I didn't notice this until after I decided to return the rack, but did check the website database, which suggests the rack will work with the CRV. It doesn't. It doesn't work because my CRV has a small spoiler above the rear window (see photo). I think the 3 CRV "Sport" models have this spoiler and the four non -sport models do not. They spoiler is made out of plastic, which I doubt is strong enough to support the weight of two bouncing bikes. I didn't test it as I don't want to pay for a replacement spoiler. My test drive of the bike rack was on my other car (Nissan VersaNote). I note the existence of this spoiler is not the fault of Allen. But their database should differentiate between cars that have this spoiler and cars that don't. IMHO. ... show more

Wanted to give this 5 stars, but... check it before installing!

The package came and looked as if it had been previously opened and repackaged - The rack didn't seem to fit properly in the box, and the flaps were forced closed with packaging tape. That's not a big deal to me, but it may have something to do with the serious problem I had with this rack. Out of the box it seemed to look/operate nicely. When I opened the rack, it snapped into place with a reassuring "click", and felt solid. I mounted it onto my car, following the easy to follow instructions, and checked that everything was secure. I then mounted my 2 average weight adult hybrid bikes, secured them in place, and rocked them to make sure they were secure. Awesome. I then got my car packed up (2 small children in car seats included), and drove to the end of my block, and "THUD". The rack collapsed, and left a nice dent in the trunk lid of my shiny new Accord. I immediately drove slowly back to my house, and checked to see what happened. To keep it short, the bolts holding the rack together were not tight, and there was just enough space between the bars that when the full weight of the bikes were on the rack, it allowed the locking pin to come free and collapse the rack. I then had to take everything off, which was much more difficult since the rack was trying to close itself with the weight of the bikes on the car, take everything inside (kids included), and tighten all the bolts. I even made a modification and added a couple washers to keep the locking pins extra tight when locked open. The next time I had the courage to try it again, it worked perfectly.
