So far I've had this vac four months and I use AT LEAST four times a week; typically a lot more often. We use a wood burning fireplace insert to heat our house at least five months of the year. I typically detest cleaning the ashes out and I avoid doing so until the ashes are piled high. Usually cleaning the ashes means the house interior/furniture and floor are covered with a thin blanket of ash dust so then I need to clean the whole home interior, yuck! It's horrible! I read quite a few negative reviews on this vacuum but I also read some great reviews. Well, I'M SO GLAD I GOT THIS VAC! I clean the front part of the woodburning area out every time before I start a new fire. Once or twice a week I vacuum quite a bit of the ashes out.There is no ash dust in the air or on furniture at all.I keep the metal vacuum nozzle of the hose tipped slightly sideways and seek to not vacuum up larger pieces of the wood coals. But if I happen to vacuum top large of a piece and it gets stuck in the hose all I need to do is cram a broom handle down the hose and it immediately is unclogged. This is my best purchase of a home item in the past 24 months! I highly recommend it! Canister is good size. I take it outside and empty the ashes straight into the garbage-sack-lined garbage can. The motor fizzled out rather spectacularly a few weeks ago. Up until then it worked well. You may see complaints that it jams. Well sure, ALL the vacuums will jam if you try to suck up chunks of coal, unburnt wood, etc. But for the ashes themselves, it worked fine. The hose did start to fall apart at the end, but thatโ€™s prolly because I was banging it into things. All told, Iโ€™m giving it a 4. 8 years is not brilliant, but on the other hand I treated it harshly and it held up well all things considered. ... show more

A nice well made ashes vacuum cleaner. Its suction is good enough for ashes. I would have given it 5 stars if it had a handle to carry it from garage to fireplace and back. I really like the filter system which unlike other vacuum cleaners which have to be replaced from time to time, this filter is reusable and is easy to dump the ashes and clean the dust from the filter. Replaced a flimsy ash vac brand for this one. This one is made specifically for the task. It is better built, its filter is better designed, and works very well. It is usable for other shop vac purposes too. Filter can be cleaned and reused. Has tapered attachment that converts to tapered brush, which is ideal for tight areas on my HP50 stove.
