  • Convenient and Portable
Color: Black
I carry a Phomemo thermal printer anywhere I take my laptop, both for business and on vacation. I find it's always handy to have. For business, I find it indispensable. From the occasional notes for clients to agreements, It's always better to print it on the spot. Especially agreements that need to be signed. Additionally, I love being able to walk out with a signed agreement rather than having to send it and have a delay. This particular model, M832 is the latest in a series of thermal printers from Phomemo which house a roll of thermal paper inside the printer, that makes it very convenient as you don't have to carry a pack of paper along with the printer. If you don't like using rolls of paper, you can take the roll out of the printer and feed individual sheets of paper or connected fan folded sheets of paper through a slot in the back. The biggest difference between this model and its predecessors is the physical size of the printer and print quality. The printer prints with a print density of 300 DPI which is a 50% higher resolution than most on the market. Since it's thermal it requires no ink, toner or transfer cartridge but does require you to use thermal paper. The M832 can connect to your phone/tablet by Bluetooth and to your computer using a USB cable which is supplied with the printer. The setup for IOS and Android is simply downloading an app. The app takes care of connecting the printer to the phone. For MacOS or Windows, you would need to install a driver which will allow you to use the printer like you would any other printer. The process is very easy. The only thing I don't really like is the quality of the roll of paper supplied with the printer but then I do not particularly like thermal papers. However, it's the nature of thermal papers and is truly a minor inconvenience . Bundled with the printer is a nice carrying case, 4 different rolls of paper, USB cable, USB-C to A converter and the instruction booklet. I recommend these printers to all my clients. ... show more

  • Something of a sidegrade for my DeskJet, I like it though. Frustrating app design.
Color: Purple
tl;dr of this review: Print quality similar (in some instances better) than my DeskJet, works great on desktop through USB, through Bluetooth it requires an app that's frustrating to use, the printer paper curls up and the 8.5" roll is tough to tear cleanly. I've been using printers for a while (back in the dot matrix days), and I know just how obnoxious they can be: clogged print heads, alignment issues, driver issues, so on and so forth. This is my first thermal printer, and I gotta say, hardware wise, I'm impressed. Software wise, it does leave some things to be desired. My testing of this device involved two Android devices and one Linux device (this will also apply to macOS users since both macOS and Linux use the same printing software called CUPS). I don't have any devices with Windows installed, so I couldn't test that. Setup on my Linux machines was fairly easy: I just had to drag and drop the PPD file and a filter file that CUPS wanted. There is a script to automate it, but that's all I needed. Printing was as simple as printing any other file. On Android, it gets a bit more complicated. If you try to pair the printer directly, you won't be able to print from it. I think there's some logic to this, however, since this device doesn't support multiple Bluetooth channels like some Bluetooth keyboards do. Instead, you use the Phomemo app (which for some reason wasn't available on my phone with LineageOS installed, but was on another stock Android phone and a Chrome OS Chromebook). By letting the app find nearby devices (the printer), you can have multiple devices access and queue print jobs without having to pair and unpair over and over again. The app makes things way more obnoxious than it needs to be. Rather than opening your file manager, you instead have to "upload" a file to the app, and then print from that. I'm not sure if it's actually uploading to some Phomemo-owned cloud server, but it does feel a bit discomforting to me. I'd love to hear from Phomemo as to that. Once it's been "uploaded," you can go through print settings, which controls how many copies you want to print, and how heavy you want the print to be. From there, you can just print away. It could have a few steps removed and work just fine. While I wish an app wasn't necessary, I do kinda understand it, since multiple devices being able to use the same printer is better than one device being locked to it. I just wish the app was a lot easier to use. It's definitely not grandparent friendly. The print quality is quite good, and definitely beats out my HP DeskJet printer. While I can't guarantee that Amazon won't compress these images to make it a bit less obvious, the radial lines are much sharper on the thermal printer versus the inkjet printer (the one that printed in Green for some indescribable reason). Lines and text are about as sharp on both, but part of that is down to color contrast from the paper itself. There's some nice shading as well on the Gray Ramp. As you can tell from the edges of the one printed from the thermal printer, it's not the easiest thing to tear the ends of the pages off. There is a serrated edge at the end of the printer, but for the full 8.5" spool, it's very easy to fold and bunch up the paper toward the middle. This does support full sheets of 8.5" x 11" thermal paper, but I don't have any. As well, the paper curls up quite a bit; for the pictures, I had to tape the ends of the thermal paper down. This is probably the biggest thing preventing me from using it as a drop-in replacement for my DeskJet printer. Supposedly the 8.5" roll is about 150 sheets, and I find that somewhat believable. In terms of print time, it took about 30 seconds for the test page to print. Admittedly, I have focused mainly on the 8.5" roll throughout this review. It's always been my philosophy that products are best tested at their upper limits. There are smaller rolls of thermal paper, and you can select what size you want to print from within the app. Those do tear a lot easier than the 8.5" roll does, however. Otherwise, there's not too much else to say on these smaller rolls; they work like the largest roll does, just smaller. The main reason why I got this was because I wanted to see how it stacked up against my much larger, much noisier, much bulkier, much less portable DeskJet printer. It prints black and white just as well (no color, obviously, but I don't print color all that often). Fewer moving parts means it'll be a whole lot more reliable. Having more space cleared on the desk is great, too. And hey, the curling issue isn't the printer's fault, it's the paper roll. Why the four stars, then? It really comes down to the app. As a desktop printer, I'm very pleased with it. The app simply tries to do too much and ends up getting in my way rather than allowing me to just print stuff. All I want the app to do is allow me to select a file to print, maybe adjust a few settings, and print it. It doesn't need to be so complicated. Since it's necessary for mobile printing, I do have to knock a star for that. ... show more

  • Print to Go On the Go!
Color: White
I REALLY wish I had this printer when I was a consultant for a Mainframe computer manufacturer. Instead of sharing the department printer with spying eyes, I could have printed my documents at my workspace, or anywhere I set up my laptop. Designed with portability in mind, this compact 10" by 3" thermal printer comes with a padded carrying case and a handle that is small enough to easily slip into you laptop case or a backpack. With this product, you get: -PHOMEMO M832 Thermal printer -Padded carrying case -3 Rolls of Thermal paper of 4.33" width, 3.14" width, and 2.08" width -USB cable dongle -USB Charging cable -Quick Start Manual The printer can be used with either WINDOWS or MAC and can print documents from either cabled devices or Smartphones. For a PC and Laptop simply connect the USB cable, and download the driver from the PHOMEMO website at m832.phomemo.com. The drivers, complete manuals, and helpful videos can also be found here. Attach the USB cable, load the paper, turn on the printer, and print. For a smartphone Bluetooth connection, download the PHOMEM APP from GOOGLE PLAY or APPLE stores, load the app, install the app, load paper, turn on Bluetooth on your phone, select the printer once paired, and then print. The only issue I found is that the product advertised that it comes with a roll of 8.5x11" paper, but when opened I only had three rolls fo receipt paper. OVERALL - Missing paper tor not, this is a versatile printer that can also work as a second printer in a pinch on a busy day in the office. Keeper! ... show more
