  • [UPDATEED] after 1 year of use. Poor durability and terrible customer service
I bought this fountain in February 2021, started using it in April 2021 when we got our kitty home and we used it for about 1 year and 2 months until it stopped functioning. My original review (below) was a very detailed comparison and explanation as to why I chose this fountain after reviewing many. We used it as directed, washed out the container every 2 weeks with mild biodegradable dish soap and at times we didn’t even have it in use because our cat is raw fed and rarely drinks to begin with. About a month ago I cleaned it but after putting it back together, it wasn’t running. I contacted customer service who initially sent me a detailed email about possible trouble shooting (cleaning the pump, making sure there was no debris, etc). I followed the instructions and noticed (upon disconnecting the pump from its power source) that the o-ring had leaked and there was a lot of corrosion at the pump to power source connection site (see photos). One of the prongs was actually broken and likely the reason for the malfunction. Overall, this appears to be a terribly insufficient and faulty design as one o-ring after only barely one year of use, was NOT able to keep moisture out of the electrical connection site. I emailed customer service who recommended to buy a new pump via Amazon explaining that they only had one year manufacture warranty. Slightly disappointed that a poor design feature led to this failure, I agreed to buy a new pump which was only 10$. The next two photos are of the pump that was sent to me and my attempt to change it out: even though I am very handy and wouldn’t even mind resealing the silicone, the electrical wiring is welded and - unfortunately - welding tools are not part of my regular non-electrician toolbox. If this was connected in a different way, it would still be quite difficult for the end-user to change out the pump, but the way it’s connected, unless you have welding experience and tools, it is IMPOSSIBLE. Not sure why they told me to get the new pump and replace it. Clearly, when a prong is broken, both connection sites need to be replaced and as described above, this is NOT possible for a normal household with what You’d expect to have in a regular tool box. Bottom line after 1 year of use: yes it did what it was supposed to buy for 60$ - being one of the most expensive fountains on the market, it is a piece of crap. 1 year longevity is absolutely unacceptable and clearly the manufacturer customer service had no better response than to buy a new pump and become an electrician in order to change it out. I am leaving my original review below just for reference so you understand how long it took me to make the decision to buy this fountain in the first place. [original review] It took me about 4 months of reading, comparing and reviewing to finally find a fountain that meets most of our criteria... Apparently, I must have some high expectations on a pet water bowl :D Four of those we ended up ordering and trying out and this one was the keeper in the end. We were looking for a fountain for our soon-to-be bengal cat who tend to be attracted to moving/flowing water sources. We also have a dog and were hoping to find one that can be used by both animals. Our main criteria were: (1) no or minimal plastic as it is less hygienic, often questionable dishwasher safe, especially over time, tends to collect biofilm and there is always the concern for chemical leak with prolonged exposure, it tends to be less durable than stainless steal/ceramic. Some animals develop acne with plastic which we were wanting to avoid at all costs. Bottom line of my search re plastic: minimizing plastic is possible but there was always going to be some plastic parts involved, mostly the pump container, tubing and filter holders. I was holding off with this particular model because of the plastic drinking plate and wish it came with a full stainless steal version and I am hoping it may come as an add-on. (2) Noise level of both water splashing and the pump (3) Smart features and safety features: does the pump run 24/7 or does it have energy (and filter) saving modes/does it turn off automatically with low water levels. (4) Backup mode for power outages? (5) Ease of cleaning / assembly (6) Design and durability (7) Filter efficiency (8) Cost of replacement filters as well as footprint on the environment with waste production by the filter (9) Suitable for both cat and dog? Larger dogs tend to require access to the reservoir given the anatomy of the drinking process which is why this specific fountain was very appealing Re (1): As mentioned above, it is aaaalmost plastic free, with a few small exceptions including the top plastic plate. There is no perfect bowl that fulfills all criteria, however, in comparison with any other fountain available, I found this one to be the most feature rich and overall thought through one which ends up justifying the fact that it is not 100% plastic free. I am hoping petkit will come up with a replacement piece made of stainless steal only to fully satisfy all of us looking for plastic free options. I tried 3 full stainless steal/ceramic options and also left reviews for those but all 3 of them had such significant limitations that it just wasn't worth it. Needless to say, even those came with a certain amount of plastic, e.g. in the filter pump, cord, filter tray etc..... There's just no "plastic free" fountain available yet and other features (see below) have to be taken into consideration when making your pro/con list. Re (2): In comparison to all other fountains that I have tried, seen and researched, this is actually true to it's word. It is QUIET and I am extremely sensitive to noise. Full 5/5 stars here with no complains and one of my top reasons why this was a keeper. Re (3): The smart functions of smart cycling and recognizing low water levels are quite nice but far from being perfect. If i was building a smart fountain, I would make it wifi / app integrated where the user can set cycling frequency and downtime and I would probably equip it with a motion sensors to ensure it starts running when approached by the cat. Especially for this price, you'd think those feature would already be included in a "smart" pet fountain. Unfortunately, we are far away form that. The smart mode just means the fountain runs for 3 min and stops for 3 min. No night time downtime or any other "smart" mode is available. However, that alone prolongs the filter lifetime form 30 to 60 days. My concern is obviously that it doesn't necessarily run when the cat wants water. There's always a little bit of residual water left in the top tray which may be enough for the kitty but not enough for the dog..... I will likely end up connecting it to a smart plug and set the timer to off at night and when we are all gone and have it run throughout the day. Re (4) It's nice to have a backup mode for outages but then again, there's no remote control via app so it kinda limits its use. I did not put in batteries but this may change later on. Re (5): Super simple to clean. Way better without having to take apart the power cord and adapter and all the other nuisances that come with most other fountains. Obviously one downside of the integrated water reservoir is that it cannot be placed in the dishwasher but not reason enough for me to dislike or take away stars. The robust and well made reservoir setup is likely the reason why this fountain is as quiet as it is and the stainless steel lining is super easy to wash out within a few minutes. Re (6): The design is definitely better suitable for cats than dogs. Our dog is a very clean eater and drinker and has barely any if no splatter with her regular dog water bowl. After using this fountain for the first time, she ended up making a big mess (see pictures). However, we love it for the kitty and it's the best one on the market so far. We decided to keep our regular water bowl for the dog so she can choose what her preference is. The looks of the fountain exceed our expectation. Nice and sleek, quiet with a flexible de-attachable power cord. As others have mentioned, it doesn't come with the AC adapter but we have a bazillion of those flying around the house so not a big deal. Re 7: i like the tight fit of the filter that pretty much does not allow any water flow past it and ensures good filtration. The original filter contains BAGS of charcoal and is not filled out with it, which makes me question what happens to the water that flows around it? Probably doesn't get filtrated, however, I see there's a bunch of filter options that are compatible with this fountain and I will try out at some point. The original filter also comes attached to a piece of plastic that I believe has to be trashed with the filter. I wish it was a more environmentally friendly setup without the unnecessary plastic waste. Re 8: This has yet to be determined (will update my review) once i find filters that meet my expectations of having a good fit, being filled out with charcoal at a good price point. Re 9: already addressed above. Bottomline: High quality materials, design and durable setup with the most quiet pump that I have found so far, some smart functions although more limited that I would like to see. Downside: Not fully stainless steel but there may be a potential for replacement of the top drinking plate with stainless steal if our words are heard..... Container size: for us who are used to changing out our dog's water daily anyway, the reservoir size was never a concern so I didn't comment on it. Hope that helps! ... show more

  • Easy Maintenance
I had been looking at this for a while and got it on a lightning deal. I was kind of worried and almost cancelled the order after reading some very negative reviews about it leaking, growing mold, and other unsavory things. I have experienced no negative issues with it the past 2 months and 4 out of my 5 cats use it (the 5th still just drinks from the dog bowl). I got it to replace the stainless steel Pioneer Pet Raindrop in which the pump had started getting loud. I also owned a plastic Drinkwell Platinum before that. Pros: I like that it has a filter replacement indicator light, although this appears to just be on a timer so if the unit is completely unplugged or loses power that will also lose track. I also like that it uses a hot swappable power port and that the power is in the base which detaches from the bowl; that keeps me from having to thread a wire out and back in when cleaning. The fact that all water is forced to go through the filter is also a plus; i always felt that in other models with filters, most of the water just bypassed it anyway. Stainless steel construction is also much better than plastic. It is easy to clean. I just lift the bowl off the base, remove the top pieces, and clean the plate, filter tray, and bowl with a dish brush and soap. I do this every time i refill it which is about every 5 days and it only takes about 5 minutes. I only take apart the pump for cleaning when i actually change the filter which seems to be about a month based on the filter indicator. Speaking of refilling, it has an indicator light for that too but it's obvious when it needs more water because it will start pumping erratically or not at all. This doubles as a pump dry protection which is also a large plus. Battery backup is nice, but haven't had a need for it yet. The filters are relatively inexpensive. The pump is very quiet. Replacement pumps are sold by themselves, if needed. There is an overflow hole if for some reason the filter becomes clogged. The design is great at keeping hair and other large particles out of the water. It looks sleek and clean. The pump and upper trays are easy to remove and disassemble. The plastic piece on the bottom of the tray that connects to the outlet of the pump unscrews from the base for easy cleaning. Cons: Can't see the water level unless you remove the top. It will stop pumping when the water level is low (not completely empty), and when that happens there is no other way to access water because it's covered by the lid. Long term, i worry about leaking where the power cord goes through the bottom of the bowl or a short where the power supply wire connects to the pump lead wire. The wire through the bottom seems to be secured by a bulkhead fitting and the lead is secured to that with a threaded pin adapter with a gasket. Other thoughts: It comes with the USB power cable but not a plug for the wall. Not a deal breaker because i had plenty of those sitting around from old phones, but still seems silly to not include. I have not experienced any issues with the fountain overflowing from a clogged filter or anything else, as stated in some reviews. I change the filter about once a month and usually try to rinse hair off the top of it when i refill the bowl. I have not experienced any issues with mold or leaking of carbon from the filters. Water only flows when there is power, though the battery backup solves this issue. Water also only flows (obviously) when there is sufficient water in the bowl. Once it drops to about an inch it will stop pumping to protect the pump from running dry. As stated, with 4 cats i am refilling and partially cleaning it every 4 to 5 days. No it cannot go in the dishwasher and the bottom of the bowl should not be submerged because of the power pin connection, but that has not been an issue for me. I always washed previous fountains by hand anyway and this one is easy to just partially fill the bowl with soapy water and use a brush in it. The upper filter tray probably could go in if you wanted (only the metal part, no plastic), but that part only takes like 30 seconds to clean by hand anyway. ... show more

  • Cleared up my kitty's chin acne.
Purchased this a little less than a year ago, and have been using it to provide water for three cats ever since then. It's quiet, all the kitties took to it, and it's easy to tell when it's empty. I give it a quick rinse and wipe down each time the water is low, give a little special attention to the pump, rinse the filter and get the fuzz off of it, and then we're back in business. Fill with brita filtered water, and we're back in business. Unless neglected it really doesn't get slimy. It doesn't have any odors, the kitties love it, and most importantly, my little fuzz buddy that used to get pretty horrendous chin acne has *none* now, even with the plastic drinking plate. The only things I would want is an at-a-glance way to check water level and much clearer max fill line on the interior stainless steel. Otherwise totally delighted with the year of flawless function we've gotten from this fountain. Note: had a Catit flower fountain previously (incidentally, how my cat got the chin acne in the first place), and it was in every material respect greatly inferior to this one. ... show more
