  • Chassis breaks - design defect - avoid this pool cleaner
I liked this pool cleaner, at first. The 4 wheels versus 3 did better at cleaning my pool and was a little less likely to get caught on the steps. The LED lighting is cool to watch at night. The catch bag does not catch fine particle dirt as well as competing cleaners do, so if you have fine, silt like dirt in your pool do NOT buy this pool cleaner. The catch bag also has the annoying habit of catching all of the pool debris (leaves, etc.) in the Velcro closure. This makes the bags last only a short while before they need to be replaced. Competing products have zipper closures which are far superior for real world use. The biggest problem though with this cleaner is a design defect that Pentair refuses to acknowledge or take care of. After 1-2 years of service, I had a front drive wheel become loose. After disassembling the unit, I noticed that the chassis frame has two front strut arms that the front drive wheels attach to. The frame was cracked on this strut arm causing the front drive wheel to no longer drive and engage. I took pictures and contacted Pentair. This plastic chassis part number is over $500 for replacement (to prevent someone building a less expensive cleaner from replacement parts). Pentair did send me a replacement part for $0 + cost of shipping, but here's the thing...it is a ALOT of work to disassemble and re-assemble this pool cleaner. You have to disassemble the unit entirely including removing pump and associated hoses. Competitive units are far easier to strip and rebuild. I did rebuild the unit and put it back in service. It worked for approximately 18 months before breaking again. When I disassembled the unit and inspected it, of course it was another broken strut arm for the front drive wheels. Same exact failure as before. I want to stress that I have taken great care of this unit so there is no reason why it should have broken in this exact spot two times, except for the fact that it is a design weakness that Pentair needs to address. I installed replacement parts like wheels, bearings, etc. all on a regular basis. Switching to a competitor cleaner because this unit is a severe disappointment. I understand having to replace "wear" type items (wheels, bearings, etc.) on pool cleaners, but no one should have to spend this much money on a premium, high-end model pool cleaner to have the chassis crack in two after 1-2 years. Unacceptable. ... show more

  • So far so good
I've been doing research on pool cleaners for the past few weeks. My Polaris 380 finally had enough cracks, breaks, and diminish cleaning power that I finally had to purchase a new one. I don't know how old Polaris 380 was, since I purchased the house with the pool and the cleaner stayed with the house. I can only assume it was 6 to 10 years old. Needless to say, it had done its job. Because of that, I had instinctively wanted to do business with Polaris again. Although the 380 was still on the market, I didn't love it. It seems good enough, but it frequently got tangled around its own cord, and stuck in the corners. Although it was lower-priced I figured it would be good time for change. Instinctively I went first two reviews for the Polaris 3900. My neighbor has one and has had it for two years without any problem. When you go on Amazon.com there are striking amount of one star reviews that make you very fearful of the product. Over half of the reviews are one star reviews, and all have the same theme. They all remark on the build quality, and frequency of changing parts. Many of them remarked how they had invested $1000 on unit, And within the first two years have invested another three or $400 in repairs. Even if you pull all those reviews aside, the one most frequent concern was that the bag was of poor build quality, and very expensive. People would go through bags within a month to six months at best. This could rack up hundreds of dollars very easily. Although Polaris did seem like a name I could trust, due to the longevity of my previous unit, This similarly appearing Pentair Kreepy Krawley racer appeared quite appealing. I also had done extensive reviews on"Robotic pool cleaners ". These require electricity to get the robot going. They are really more of a clean on-demand as opposed to a"set and forget"type experience that the pressure pool cleaners are. Really I preferred the pressure pool cleaner since I already have the capacity in my pool, they were significantly less expensive, and I can keep the unit in my pool at all times if I desired. If you get a robotic pool cleaner, since it works with electricity, no one should be swimming in the pool the same time as the robot. Also you need to deal with lugging it out, which the units are often around 25 pounds, plugging it in, and then remembering to remove it and our to three hours later. For these reasons, I decided to go again with the pressure side pool cleaner. First and foremost it is significantly less expensive than its competitor. Both this model and its competitor seem to have mid year rebates that make the purchase even more enticing. For this reason alone, I figured (even if this unit was awful and broke as frequently as the other) I could purchase two or even three of these entire units in the same one to two-year amount of time and be ahead of the game. So at the end of the day it would be a better value even if I had to replace it entirely. Now to the unit itself. It requires a booster pump. I am using my original Polaris booster pump from the 10-year-old unit. It appears to operate flawlessly with this booster pump. The device comes with a pressure sensor that you can connect to the wall outlet and adjust the outward pressure. At its default setting, my booster pump was running at maximum, so even after 10 years my booster pump is still running at its top capacity. For those of you that want a slower cleaning experience, you can turn down the flow to the machine. This is also quite helpful if you do not wish to have the machine climb your walls if you have a pool that allows unit to do so. The flow valve came with an adapter specific to this machine, but you can still use other brands adapters such as Polaris. One of the first and most recognizable addition to this unit is a scrubbing brush. The bristles are not too harsh to worry about damaging your pool. It is a rubberized material, and it's good at cleaning the walls and floor. It won't tear your foot apart if you happen to be too close to it during swimming. Of note, the manufacturer does not recommend swimming with unit unit in the pool. You'll also notice that the unit has four wheels. I feel like this gives the unit more stability than the other three wheeled models. Most notably, the design mechanism makes the racer go forward most of the time, And occasionally move backwards. This makes it very effective about getting out of corners, and not getting trapped. Also, when it seems to get stuck for a moment the four wheel design makes it easier to climb up a wall and flip around. The two front wheels on the drive wheels, and the back wheels are just for stability. Of note, I did try using the sweeping tail, but for whatever reason it was causing the back end of the pool cleaner to rise up and made it slightly unstable. It would occasionally flip on its side with the sweeping tail. Instruction manual recommends that most pools do not need the sleeping tail, and the unusual behavior ceased as soon as I removed it. The other thing that you'll notice about the racer, is that it has an large inlet for suctioning leaves, twigs, branches, and dirt into it's very large filter bag. The filter bag also has its own flotation device in it, making the bags stay upright and ensuring all the debris suctions to the top. This feature I think also gives the racer more stability. A common complaint of the other models such as the Polaris 3900, is that the dual bag design would cause the cleaner to flip on its side, Swirl around 360° indefinitely, Break the bag open and spill its contents out at the bottom of your pool. This bag on the research seems to be of a high quality, and has a large Velcro opening at the top. They even created two opening tabs sewn into the unit to make it easy to opening close. They provided you with very detailed and instructions for installation. If I had not read them, I would've just placed the racer in the pool. Apparently you should do some measurements in your pool, and cut the hose to an appropriate length for your pool specifications. For my application, I only cut approximately 1 foot off the end of the hose. The last feature arts LED lights, which are more of a gimmick more than anything else. Even the instructions hint that if they're not working, to not be too concerned nor really care. They have power through the generator of the wheels, and are blue LED indicators on the side of the unit. I have not used unit at night, but they were faintly visible during the day. They're not going to provide you with any significant light, But certainly enough for the dog to chase after in the dark of the night. Last and most importantly is the cleaning capability. After only a few hours of use, my pool was entirely clean. What would've taken my Polaris 380 days, took just a few hours for the racer. I did have to make some subtle adjustments to the water jet outlet, but once those adjustments were made it seemed to hit all sections of the pool without difficulty. It seemed to clear all the dirt and debris as well as sand with ease. Even if it was partially floating just above the floor of the pool, its suction was still able to get leaves off the bottom. The one test that I haven't completed is the one test of time. I've been impressed with it so much that it prompted me to review the product on its first day of use. I will gladly update my review, to see if the racer is a quality product that can be trusted for years. ... show more

  • Pentair Kreepy Krauly Racer only Cleans You Out of MONEY! I would not reccommend this to others. BUYERS BEWARE!
My husband purchased the Pentair Kreepy Krauly Racer two years ago, and it has been a money drainer. He replaced the feedline wall connector five times due to cracks. The Pentair Kreepy Krauly Racer appears to be poorly made, and the replacement wheels do not turn freely at times causing the unit to stall in one area. He had to adjust the pressure several times after it ran correctly for an extended period. However, the unit started running slow and would move forward. It also stayed in one spot without moving, and the unit would not back up. We will not purchase another Pentair product again. We will stick with Polaris. My last Polaris cleaner lasted eight years. My only reason for changing was a recommendation from a pool supply store. I will not do that again. ... show more

  • Regret this purchase, constant issues after using less than 2 years
Our Polaris 380 finally died and after reading a lot of reviews chose to "upgrade" to this model. Big mistake. It was fine for the first year, but then the problems started. Granted, we live in south Texas where it runs 365 days/year, but it really should hold up, right?! First the tail went. Then problems with the bag mount, and now the drive. And parts are not easy to come by. We're going back to Polaris. ... show more
