My original Hayward unit with the four walking foot pad and side flipper fin things was a maintenance and pressure-balancing nightmare that left my pool less than half vacuumed. My local pool supply people told me that unit was top of the line so I stuck with it for about 3 years too long. This year, I'd had it with the old flipper-walker and found this. It's a DREAM. My pool is PERFECTLY vaccumed and the water is crystal clear! RUN, DON'T WALK to buy this unit. If you can afford a pool, you can afford this unit!! If you can't afford this unit, you should think about selling your house and getting one without a pool! Totally easy to use (plug and play) and, it really sucks! But in a good way. Great suction. I'm just sad our season here in Utah will be ending soon and I'll have to park this dream until next seaons. ... show more

I have pool plaster that's 47 years old. I had the creepy Crowley before, which caused extensive damage to my pool steps. I kept trying to find a pool cleaner that would not scrape the pool plaster. I finally found the right one. The rubber on the wheels is soft and does not scrape the plaster. It works great; however, it does not go up the walls or the steps as which I like. In turn, I have to brush the walls down and the steps. It does not take long. I am very happy with the product. ... show more

Have not had an issue with it turning on its side. It does not climb the vertical walls no matter the settings but does climb the steep sides of the bowl. It does not sweep completely clean. I still have to brush dirt spots. It will NOT remove algae. You will have to brush everything loose. It takes about 5 to 6 hours for it to get everything covered. My pool is 16 x 32 and 5 feet at the deep end. It does climb onto the standard circular bottom drain and makes all 4 wheels free spin making it stuck so you have to watch it. While it does kind of free you from vacuuming, it does require tending to. I mean, I can vacuum the entire pool in about 20 minutes manually so this doesn't save any time, just saves a little muscle. Is it worth the price? Maybe a break even if it lasts more than 2 to 3 years, otherwise, it won't be worth it. ... show more

I will be returning this unit due to continued falling over and although the manufacture says the unit will right itself, I see no evidence of this. After a week of using the unit, the floor of my pool is dirtier than ever. I replaced the Aquanaut 2 wheel unit with this 4 wheel unit assuming it would do a better job and get stuck on the bottom drain covers less frequently due to 4 wheels pushing it, but it does not work better. Yes, drain covers are not a problem, but falling over is. Once it was actually upside down. I have sat watching the unit on its side for 30 minutes waiting for it to right itself, I assumed when it came up against the pool sides, but it does not happen. My 2 wheel Aquanaut is passing its 4th year and it has done a great job, so I will go back to that style unit. What seems to be the problem is that the 4 wheel unit is top heavy. It gets to the side of the pool does a good job in going up maybe a foot or so but then when it tries to turn as it is backing down, it falls on its side. Best laid plans of mice and men! Just as a note, my inground pool is 10 feet by 40 feet, 4 feet deep, your basic lap pool. ... show more

    • Spend the extra money over a cordless one

I bought one of those rechargeable cordless ones for half the price a week before I got this one. Over 3 days time, I ran it 5 cycles for the for the 40 minutes that it would operate on a 6 hour charge. The pool didn't look any different. I sent it back and got this one for another 200 bucks. I dropped it in the pool and left it there for 24 hours or so, doing nothing more than emptying the skimmer basket a couple of times to clear out all the leaves that it gathered. The pool looks like I just installed it today. Better still, the hose that they sent was was just barely long enough to cover my 40' pool and and caused the vacuum to tip and be less effective at the end of its reach. I wrote Hayward about the problem and they said they would send me more hose. I expected them to send me a single additional length of hose (about 3') which would have solved the problem. Just 2 days later an entire Box of 10 brand new hose sections arrived, with with no hassle or cost to me whatsoever. I am very impressed with the product and the customer service. Running for 24 hours completely unattended, the machine never got stuck once. When you get it, READ the instructions. It's very tunable to meet your needs. It can climb the walls, or be tuned down so as to only do the bottom (which is how I have mine set up). There are 3 different restrictor plates that can be swapped into the cleaner to change how fast it goes, as well as a valve at the skimmer/intake connection to control the suction. It's still new, so I can't speak to longevity, but it's initial mission blew the contender out of the water (bad pun intended). ... show more

I have had 3 or 4 types of pool cleaners over 30 years. All have spent 80% of their time stuck in corners or somewhere else. This one also sticks in those places, but pretty quickly unsticks itself. It is stuck much less than half the time. We'll see how long it lasts, but, so far, so good. UPDATE: Jan. 2026 A couple of years later I am far less impressed by this unit. It spends all of its time laying on its side spinning it's wheels. I bought new tires and have experimented with different lengths of hose because of the two places I find it spinning on its side is near the end of its reach. As much as this unit costs, I feel it should work longer than 2 years. (It began failing 6 months ago and i am just now updating my review.) I no longer recommend this product. UPDATE: March 2026 My pool guy finally figured out that more floats were needed on the hose close to the cleaner so the hose rises vertically out of the unit for 3 or 4 feet. This seems to keep it upright and not laying on its side with spinning wheels touching nothing. So, I give back a couple of stars. ... show more
