  • Very effective
Style: 2-Wheel
Absolutely blown away by this thing. I’ve have a g3 barracuda I’ve been using for 10yrs now. It did a decent job and was way better than vacuuming manually. I left it in the pool 24/7 and depending on the time of year had it running several hrs a day. Pool would be decent but struggled with leaves and pine needles especially in fall and winter here in FL. Over the last 10yrs the trees behind my property line have grown and throw way more leaves and pine needles in my pool every year and the barracuda struggles more and more, constantly getting clogged and not working. Got my aquanaut 2 days ago hooked it up, dialed it in as close as I could to the correct rpm. This thing is a beast just sucking up everything within a few hours it had my filthy pool almost spotless. I have a zodiac leaf canister hooked up as well and had to dump it 4-5 times as well as the cleaner got jammed up with debris a few times in the hrs it ran. While the cleaner did get clogged I don’t fault the cleaner as my pool was an absolute mess with leaves, pine needles, bark and some small sticks, that is beyond anything the aquanaut is advertised to do and directions say to clean out large debris prior to using the aquanaut. No that the pool is clean I have no doubt it will run flawlessly without getting clogged. I did have to run my Hayward variable speed pump almost 300rpm higher to achieve the correct rpm on the aquanaut. At first I’d did not like this as it pulls almost 200w more power but from the looks of it I will be able to drastically cut down the hrs of cleaner time. I was running my barracuda cleaner 4hrs a day and looks like I will be able to run the aquanaut under 2hrs which will save a few $ over the yrs of use. One thing I wish I had researched was the big difference between the 2 wheel vs 4 wheel version being the 4 wheel does longer straight aways before turning aka for larger pools. I thought the 4 wheels was more for climbing and traction from deep end to shallow. Again not the cleaners vault it’s mine but the good news is they make the gear to gain that ability for the 2 wheel and it’s on like $13. ... show more

  • Significant improvement over Navigator, don't forget the rebate
Style: 4-Wheel
After putting the tubes together and dropping this 4-wheel model in the pool without reading a thing, it worked well so I can say that it is almost me-proof. I only read the directions because it didn't climb the walls, which is why I purchased it over the 2-wheel model (reviews seemed to suggest the 4-wheel climbed better). The directions explained that the two floats weren't in the correct positions "out of the box" so I moved them up, and that the "throat" on the bottom can be replaced with larger or smaller ones, which I did (large for me). I'm not getting the ideal RPMs on the wheels and it still isn't climbing, but to be frank our pool equipment is about 20 years old and is pretty beat up. So, it may be time for a new pump, since this seems to be running perfectly. Our old Navigator stopped climbing walls, too, about five years ago. This one gets to every corner of the pool and does NOT fall on its side like others have complained. We have a normal semi-rectangular 15' x 30' pool with an 8' deep end, and of course all the tubes weren't necessary; I'm using all but four. It also climbs over the bottom drain covers although they do slow it down. So, it's working well except for the climb. I'm hoping that some general pump and system maintenance will improve the speed and climbing, but at least it works better than our four-year old Hayward Navigator - it is faster and doesn't get stuck on the bottom drains. Otherwise, I would recommend either product with the edge to the newer Aquanaut. I almost forgot - Hayward has ongoing $100 rebate cycles. Some reviews say the rebate is legit while others say it didn't work for one reason or another. I read the rules and didn't see any reason why they wouldn't honor it, so applied. YMMV. ... show more

  • Worked until just after the return window.
Style: 2-Wheel
I HAD a Poolvergneugen, which is what this product used to be before it was procured by Hayward. That Poolvergneugen worked reliably for many years. I loved my Poolvergneugen. The old Poolvergneugen started jamming up at the end of last year, where the wheels simply would not turn. We replaced the drive train, but it jammed up again after like 3 months. When they replaced the drive train for the third time, my confidence in the machine was shattered, which broke my heart. It was old. I suppose it's bound to happen. I decided to buy another Poolvergneugen, but discovered that the company had been procured by Hayward pools. Hayward is a great brand. I have a Hayward pool pump and a Hayward DE filter and they have run reliably for years, like my old Poolvergneugen. I didn't hesitate to order the Hayward Aquanaut 200 expecting the same quality I expect from such a powerful marriage as Hayward and Poolvergneugen. I installed the Aquanaut and was immediately impressed with its impressive suction. For a while my pool was cleaner than it had ever been. Suddenly this week, not two full months after purchase, I woke up and saw a thick layer of desert sand all over the bottom of my pool. The Aquanaut was on, but it wasn't moving. I took it out and inspected it. I opened the lid. I can find absolutely no obstruction. The gears are totally jammed. If I'm going to see this working I'm going to drop at least $40 on repairs. I just don't know what to say. This isn't the quality I expect from Hayward. I threw my old Poolvergneugen back in the pool. The Poolvergneugen is working again. A ten year old cleaner is more reliable than this one that's barely 2 months old? ... show more

  • Great Cleaner. Better Than The Hayward Ultra Vac It Replaced
Style: 2-Wheel
So we have been using the Hayward Ultra Vac and in years past the Hayward Navigator. I bought the parts (A Frame, Pods, Turbine, Rubber Feet, etc) and it cost me about $100 for all that. In the past, it was easy and the unit worked after I replaced the parts. This time it didn't (not sure if I did something wrong but I'm tired of rebuilding everything). The parts wear out pretty darn quickly as it runs everyday in our pool. Now..enter the new Hayward Aquanaut 2 wheel drive cleaner. It has a turbine with adjustable size flaps for larger debris to enter without clogging. Much simpler workings inside and the really only part that looks like it will need regular replacing is the set of rubber tires that I think cost about $15 a set. I hooked it up tonight and our pool was covered in leaves. In just one hour, most were gone and in the large leaf canister (Hayward) inline on the new Aquanaut cleaner. I tried going with a different brand/model based on reviews and the Barracuda G3 I purchased was complete garbage. Got stuck in corners, passed over leaves and didn't pick them up...not good at all. The Hayward Ultra Vac was about $379 and this 2 wheel Aquanaut was $449. For the difference, I'm guessing it will be easier to maintain and it did a fantastic job of cleaning our pool t his evening. The 4 wheel is probably great too but recommended for larger pools with a deeper deep end (ours is only about 6 feet deep). The steering on the Aquanaut is great as it seems to randomly cover every square inch of our pool. The tires have a nubby that sticks out on each one that helps ensure it won't get stuck at a corner or on a drain that sticks up in the deep end. It also covers well both deep and shallow end of our pool ( I see so many complaints about cleaners that stay in one area only...not so here). Yes it's more than I expected to spend but it works great. I highly recommend this cleaner. Great for leaves. ... show more

  • Spend the extra money over a cordless one
Style: 4-Wheel
I bought one of those rechargeable cordless ones for half the price a week before I got this one. Over 3 days time, I ran it 5 cycles for the for the 40 minutes that it would operate on a 6 hour charge. The pool didn't look any different. I sent it back and got this one for another 200 bucks. I dropped it in the pool and left it there for 24 hours or so, doing nothing more than emptying the skimmer basket a couple of times to clear out all the leaves that it gathered. The pool looks like I just installed it today. Better still, the hose that they sent was was just barely long enough to cover my 40' pool and and caused the vacuum to tip and be less effective at the end of its reach. I wrote Hayward about the problem and they said they would send me more hose. I expected them to send me a single additional length of hose (about 3') which would have solved the problem. Just 2 days later an entire Box of 10 brand new hose sections arrived, with with no hassle or cost to me whatsoever. I am very impressed with the product and the customer service. Running for 24 hours completely unattended, the machine never got stuck once. When you get it, READ the instructions. It's very tunable to meet your needs. It can climb the walls, or be tuned down so as to only do the bottom (which is how I have mine set up). There are 3 different restrictor plates that can be swapped into the cleaner to change how fast it goes, as well as a valve at the skimmer/intake connection to control the suction. It's still new, so I can't speak to longevity, but it's initial mission blew the contender out of the water (bad pun intended). ... show more
