  • Excellent addition to a Traeger
Color: Hexagonal
I've been noticing that a lot of the negative reviews are a result of users not knowing what they are doing. People are complaining that the tube is hard to light or that the pellets burn too quickly. I have to state that the problem is with your pellets or your torch, or you. How is using a butane lighter (bic?) going to get pellets going? Really? Check your expectations and use your common sense. I use a real torch to get this going and good quality pellets. This tube works great! Way better than the chicken wire one I made myself. I used Bear Mountain Hickory pellets in my Traeger Ironwood 885 yesterday and the difference was very noticeable. Without this addition, the smoke would penetrate after a cook but the flavor just wasn't there. I was trying many different brands of pellets thinking it was the pellets but, no. The Traeger I have burns a little too cleanly and most of it is sucked right out of the vent -- even with super smoke, the flavor just wasn't hitting the mark. After I put this in, there is still a little smoke that escapes but placing it on the front allows the fan to pull the smoke over the food making it much more pronounced. For the first time in almost 3 years, I think I'm finally realizing the full potential of this smoker... it just needed a little help. I filled the tube up 80%, torch the top until a flame appears and I let it burn for 10 minutes. I blew it out and boy, there is a LOT of smoke. I smoked pork loins and it took about 3 hours. Once done, I still had about 30% left in the tube. I just knocked the smoldering pellets out and let it cool and then saved it for another day. Well worth the money and a great gift for any back yard cook! I can see this working really well using the snake method in a regular charcoal grill, too! ... show more

  • Great for smoking food on any BBQ grill
Color: Hexagonal
This Smoke Tube for Pellet Smoker works great to smoke food on any kind of BBQ grill, as long as the grill is big enough to keep the tube 3-4 inches away from the food being smoked. Shorter smoking tubes are available for smaller grills. I gave this tube to a friend after he got excited about smoking fish after tasting my smoked salmon. His smoked salmon was "almost" as good as mine. Some of the images show this tube being hung vertically. That may work on some grills, but I don't think that would work well for me. I lay my smoking tube down on the main BBQ grill grates. I use a 12 inch tube like this one--but this one has an important improvement: It's a hexagonal tube instead of a circular one. This keeps the tube in one spot on the grill. My tube works great too, but it can roll across the grill. I prop mine in place with a small bit of red brick. This tube is better. One fills the tube with wood pellets or small wood chips. Many different mixtures of wood pellets for smoking are available. Unless you're pretty sure what kind of wood you want to use, perhaps buy a smaller bag of pellets to try them out. Lighting the pellets can be a little challenging. I use a small butane torch normally used to burn sugar on creme brulees to light the pellets. A butane BBQ/candle lighter will work too. One has to hold the flame against the pellets at the open end of the tube until they can sustain a flame briefly. I've also lighted the pellets after pouring a tsp or two of cooking oil on the pellets. The pellets smolder for 4-6 hours on a fill, which is often enough time to impart the smoke flavor I like. I laughed when I saw this smoking tube included a cleaning brush. All that is left when the pellets burn out is very fine ash. The ash falls out of the tube when the open end is pointed downward and the tube is tapped gently. Indeed, one has to be careful removing the tube from the grill to avoid dusting your smoked food with fine ash falling from the holes in the tube. My tube is stainless steel too, and shows no wear after 3-4 years of use. I expect this stainless steel hexagonal smoking tube will last for years. Smoking food is easy, and one doesn't have to spend a lot of money and buy a dedicated smoker BBQ. If you'd like to give it a try, this tube is a good way to get started. ... show more

  • Once it gets started it is great.
Color: Hexagonal
I started with pellets and a long candle lighter...did not work. Tried bic lighter...did not work...Tried matches and paper...did not work. Tried butane lighter...it malfunctioned (equipment issue). Then put a piece of a fire starter stick inside just a little bit and finally ignited. 10 mintues later, it smoked and using a pot holder, moved it to smoker and put 45 degrees leaning on Traeger upper grill and left side of inner wall. This worked amazing and smoked for 5 hours. The Traeger didn't smoke as good as I hoped but this device ended up making the best beef ribs and Whole Smoked Chicken that I have ever eaten. AMAZING. My Traeger was the small one with bronze lid...it does not have a super smoking option. I have since purchased a butane torch top to go to my propane cylinders. Should be no problem to lite next time. This is really great product. I did leave the pot holder underneath it after I took it out of smoker and it was so hot it melted the pot holder...soaked device for 1 hour and used a kitchen knife to scrape residue off. Be aware, due to burning it will charr black on outside. Don't really care cause it works but that was not listed anywhere but it happened and did not come off at all. No big deal but still worth mentioning. ... show more
