  • Perfect for a Couch too! WE LOVE IT!
Color: Black
TL;DR - My 95 year old incredibly “particular” grandfather loves it, it’s an absolute godsend in terms of making his life easier and safer! My 95 year old grandfather still lives alone in the same house he’s been in for 50+ years out of pure spite. His whole life, he has always been incredibly “particular” about how things should be (I swear to you this man has undiagnosed Asperger’s at the very least - not just because of this, there are many reasons I say this). His extreme stubbornness about things needing to be a certain way has made it challenging to modify his living situation as he has gotten older and his needs have changed. [Referencing images] He has two of these couches. He and my grandmother bought them second-hand at a random estate sale when they were first married. The couches, therefore, are from the first half of the 1900s, if not the first quarter. They are very low to the ground, and the cushions inside were the originals from when the thing was made. These features both made it incredibly difficult for my grandfather to get up from the couch. I was watching my grandfather rock himself back and forth, back and forth, until he had built up enough momentum to launch himself forward up onto his feet. Unfortunately, the momentum he had created didn’t cease once he was on his feet. Once he was on his feet, he was still in motion rocking forward, his face becoming parallel to the ground, almost falling completely forward onto the little coffee table in front of him. It gave me a heart attack seeing him having to struggle so much and then try to catch himself and balance so he didn’t faceplant. I get my stubbornness from him, and informed him his current trick to get off the couch was unacceptable, and that I was going to make it better for him. (Yes, I would LOVE it if he would let me get one of those electric recliners that has built in stand assist, but alast, he would find a way have the truck it was delivered in take it back to the store as soon as I left his house.…he’s done it before lol) So, first I grabbed risers for the legs of the couch to raise it up a bit, and then I re-stuffed his cushions with firm memory foam, so he wouldn’t be sunken into the couch. Both of these things helped, but I was still seeing him have to rock a little to launch himself up to standing position. It wasn’t nearly as dramatic as what he was doing before, but this was still not ideal. So I started looking for a handle for his couch. I knew it had to be unobtrusive, simple, and stable if I was going to have any shot of him approving it. I found a few couch-specific handles, but they looked “obtrusive”. Very in your face, and kind of in the way of him sitting on this still low (but risen about 6”) sofa. I went with this product here, and it’s perfect. I had to cut some tiny little slits in some of the more discreet fabric of the couch (all very hidden from view…he doesn’t know I did this and cannot know I did this), and I wrapped my own strap around the end of this and the couch frame a few times, pulled it taunt, secured it, and gave the handle some good test yanks and such to make sure it didn’t budge. It was solid, the strap held it tight to the frame, and the front where the handles are were steady and solidly in place when being used. I called him in to test it (he had been coming in every 5 minutes to check what I was doing and to ask how much longer I was going to be because he wanted to watch tv and refused to sit on the other perfectly good couch to do so…he said he “could only watch tv if he was sitting in his usual spot”…I told you he’s particular). HE LOVES IT. I mean he IMMEDIATELY liked it! The very first test he did, he was able to stand straight up without issue, and quicker than I’ve seen him stand in DECADES. His body was able to go directly from sitting on the couch to standing upright. Once he was standing, he wasn’t even swaying or trying to stop excess momentum. I saw it in his eyes: I saw him go “Oh!” in his head in pleasant surprise. He wanted to test it again and he did with the same results. He was immediately fond of his new couch handle. I CANNOT EXPLAIN TO YOU HOW UNIQUE THIS IS. EVEN THINGS HE KNOWS HE WILL LIKE/THINGS HE WANTS HE USUALLY HAS AT LEAST A LITTLE BIT OF TREPIDATION AND INDECISIVENESS ABOUT. But not this handle, no sir, this is his instant new best friend. If I could give this thing 100 stars I would do so without hesitation! I will note the only slight issue (and this isn’t actually a design flaw): The handle in the image is at its shortest setting. He has really really bad arthritis in both shoulders (as well as a torn rotator cuff in both I’m told), and can barely lift his arms (at the shoulder joint-his elbow joint works fine). He can get his elbow a few inches above his rib cage , but I’m talking like maybe 2” tops. Because of this, he can’t lift his arm high enough to reach the padded top handle, but he is happy using the white bar just below it to grab and pull himself up. I understand this product is meant for beds, and therefore the adjustable height of the handle was designed with mattresses in mind, so it’s not something I feel deducts any stars or points from my opinion of the handle, as I’m a person who is not using it for its explicit intended purpose of beds. I will probably just bring my saw and drill over and cut off some of the length of the legs and drill a new hole on each side for the pins to lock into. Not a big deal, I just wanted to mention it as an fyi in case someone else is getting this for a loved one who doesn’t have great mobility in their arms. ... show more

We purchased this for my double hip replacement for my side of the bed. It's sturdy and great, and very helpful for me to use to get in and out of bed. Also protects you from falling out of bed. Definately could not have gone with it. !
