  • Minimal effort for the best result

NO longer have to use axe, I would give it 6 stars if I could!

  • Pretty good, but could use a small tweak
Size: 10"(Φ) x 14.5" (H)
So first of all - bolt the darned thing down to a stable base. You're going to be doing some violence to it and you don't need stuff flying off in random directions. Once that was done and I'd split a few logs I decided that there was one design tweak that was really needed. The blade supports are two round posts at each end of the splitting blade. You can't drive the supports up through the log, they're not sharp. As designed, the log support places the back edge of the log directly over one of the supports. So you wind up having to lean the log back a bit to avoid this creating an off-axis force. It would be better if the support was bent forward about 1" so it keeps the log over the blade instead of the support. I found the little sledge hammer wildly inadequate, but I was splitting some really hard wood that was just barely small enough to go into this. I switched to the full-sized hammer. It works well though, and it's a lot easier and safer to apply a full power overhead sledge hit to the end of a log than if you have to use a wedge or a maul. After splitting a few logs I decided a few things: 1) Splitting logs is hard work. 2) Go get a hydraulic splitter if you're going to be doing this a lot. Or have a kid do it. 3) If 1 or 2 fail, this tool is better than doing it the old-fashioned way ... show more

  • Works great, sturdy and fits larger logs
Size: 10"(Φ) x 14.5" (H)
The Optimech log splitter works really great. I have wanted to get one of these for quite some time. It is a useful tool to break up larger logs into smaller pieces for the backyard firepit and comes in handy as well when camping. It is much safer than using an axe which I don't feel comfortable with just anyone handling, unlike this log splitter. What attracted me to this particular log splitter was that it is able to handle larger logs just as well as smaller ones with the open design and is more versatile than most. Also, it comes with a mini sledgehammer, which I initially had some doubts that it would work but found it to be surprisingly effective and makes the whole process easier and safer for just about anyone to do. During testing of this log splitter, I found it to be sturdy and fairly stable. The log splitter came with bolts so that you can bolt it down if you have a permanent location as well as some rubber pieces that slide onto the base which appear to be designed to keep it from sliding on smoother surfaces. I did not use either as I set it up on grass. I did not have any issues at all with the log splitter falling over or moving about. While splitting logs in almost all cases it took just two blows from the mini sledgehammer. The first blow would get the log well onto the blade while the second one would finish the job. I tried it on dried seasoned wood as well as recently cut green hardwood. A few of the green hardwood pieces took a bit more effort but for the most part I was really happy with the performance of this log splitter. This log splitter is well made and the finish on it as well as the sledgehammer looks like it will protect both items from rusting. It is relatively light and easy to carry, especially for how sturdy it is. It works great and I recommend it, especially if you, like me, prefer one that can handle larger diameter logs. The price is a little higher than many of the log splitters I have seen but it comes with the sledgehammer and is more versatile than most of them so could well be worth the extra cost. ... show more

  • Works, absolutely needs to be bolted down
Size: 10"(Φ) x 14.5" (H)
so, this does work, and it's nice that it's only a half circle so it accommodates logs of varying sizes easily. the drawback to this design, is that the cut end that you're standing the log on can't be cut at any sort of an angle or the log just sort of teeters off to the side. the splitter absolutely needs to be bolted to a larger round, otherwise it bounces all over the place when you drive the sledge down on it. ... show more

  • Works Great For Kindling.
Size: 10"(Φ) x 14.5" (H)
This is great for small logs to make kindling. It's a little easier to use if ya set up on something besides on the ground. Hubby is tall and found it too far down to use it in the ground. It works great! It is very stable and sturdy. The quality of the materials are very good. Nice to have to help cut kindling. I would recommend this. ... show more

  • Works great!
Size: 10"(Φ) x 14.5" (H)
This thing is excellent for splitting logs! I love that it has holes for mounting it down to a surface (like a splitting log or table). The fact that it "holds" the log for you makes splitting really simple. This is especially true when a log doesn't split on the first strike. It's just sitting there waiting for another strike. Obviously, nothing holds a candle to an automated wood splitter, but this is a nice tool for your splitting needs. I'm very happy with it and feel confident recommending it to others! I also noticed Jason Kelce was using this on his Amazon documentary "Kelce". Good stuff! Get one of these for yourself if you're considering it. You won't be disappointed! ... show more

  • Kindling maker
Size: 10"(Φ) x 14.5" (H)
First of all, I did not split all of that wood with this splitter. But this splitter which I am using for making kindling, is a great compliment to my electric splitter. I like the high bar which stabilizes the log prior to splitting. The 4 pound hammer is a good weight for splitting kindling. The hammer is all metal and of high quality. I put the splitter on a stump to try it out but will attach it to a plywood table so I won't have to bend over to pick up the split pieces. The splitter is well made, heavy duty, but is not overly heavy to lift. ... show more

  • Save, easy to use, makes great kindling
Size: 10"(Φ) x 14.5" (H)
I like this Optimech Log Splitter 10”x14.5 with 4LB Sledge Hammer. It worked well just by itself, and if I were going to be using it outside, it would have been fine. Whenever you hit it with the sledge hammer, it jumps, so outside that's fine, but inside it damages the floor. So I bolted it onto a large wood round and that made all the difference. It's much sturdier and faster and easier to chop my kindling. It's nice that the top is a half circle, so I can put a log in it, and not worry about it getting wedged into it. This makes splitting kindling so much easier. I recommend this product. ... show more
