🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The Hitch Cargo Basket is generally well-received by customers with its sturdy construction being advantageous for long trips and the basket's ample space praised for helping with packing. Its collapsible sides and options to fold it up when not in use were highlighted as notable features. However, some customers reported issues with rusting and a few have raised that the installation instructions could be clearer.

Pros

  • 🔧 Sturdy construction and anti-sway spring allow for safe transport of heavy items.
  • 🚀 Capability to handle close to 200 lbs of weight.
  • 🔄 Folds up and locks in place when not in use.
  • 📦 Generous packing space provided by high panels.

Cons

  • ⚠️ Some users noted issues with rusting after a couple of months.
  • 🔎 Installation instructions could be clearer and more detailed.
  • 🔍 Limited visibility due to the stickers not being highly reflective.
  • 💪 Some found the cargo basket quite heavy, making installation and removal slightly difficult for a single person.

Should I Buy It?

If you frequently travel or need additional storage space on your vehicle, this Hitch Cargo Basket may be a good fit. Despite minor issues such as rusting and limited reflectivity, the overall sturdy construction and high payload capacity are major benefits. It would be a worthy purchase after ensuring you can manage the product's weight and have a plan to avoid rust formation.

  • Super convenient, sturdy cargo transport rack
I saw some reviews indicating this was hard to assemble, but from my perspective, if you're used to assembling furniture (IKEA type), this is way simpler, though the screws and parts are larger. I had it fully assembled in 30 minutes including the time it took to remove it from the box. There are some very hefty zip ties holding certain parts securely in the box, so make sure you have some tin snips, spade-type wire cutters or very heavy duty scissors available. I used a wire cutter. I bought this for an all-arounder, to use as a trailer when I didn't need a full trailer. It can fit a 21" snowblower, and you can maneuver things to get a lawnmower on there too. 2 days after I received it, I hauled 380 lbs of bulk debris using this rack along with a 4x6 elastic net. I piled well over the top of the rails, and even driving on a highway never felt nervous- no odd sounds or shaking. Quick note as well... My son and I were able to stand in the rack without any issue. Because these things are designed to hold distributed weight, you have to either balance yourself (No standing on the edge) or lay down. So that review that complained about the bent parts after standing probably didn't consider the weight distribution. I love the gates and fold flat feature, this one is designed better than the others I examined, and a decent price as well. My only issue is the design of the anti rattle lock nut. They provide an enormous bolt and nut, held in the chamber by a spring... But then you need to screw in from the other side, and put a lock nut over the tip of the bolt as well. A bit of inconvenient extra work to install and remove. I recommend the company looks at how Curt designs their lock mechanism. It's a 3/4" bolt (rather than 1") that goes into a welded nut, and the pressure between the welded nut and external bolt is what keeps the hitch accessory tight, no springs, no extra bolts. However, this issue is a minor inconvenience for an otherwise superior cargo rack. Update 2/5/21: I have hauled multiple loads of debris, brush, and flooring. Also have hauled the old Ariens 21" snowblower, with aggressive spin-outs and bumps with unplowed roads multiple times this winter so far. I do not keep the cargo rack on full time (recommend not doing this due to risk of rust). I have really strained and beat this thing to death, with significant pressure from straps on the cross bars as well. It has not bent or budged. I don't understand why one reviewer was able to bend this with 200 lbs. I have held a max of 380 lbs of debris (see pic), and have had no issues with bending. It's well worth it if you don't have a truck and need to haul nasty or heavy things on occasion. ... show more

  • Very Nice Basket
Size: Hitch cargo basket with hitch stabilizer
I’ve only just installed this to my RV which has a 2” receiver hitch. The instruction were fairly straightforward but I wish they had listed the tools needed to put it together. I have a huge assortment of tools so I wasn’t concerned about not having the correct tools, but since I was assembling this at a different location, it would have been nice to identify the correct sockets for assembly. This really is just a minor issue however. I have not had a chance to load it up yet but I specifically purchased this one because of the collapsible sides and the fact that it can be folded up. This seems sturdy enough for my purposes. One other minor issue, when the sides are collapsed and the rack is folded, one side of the basket seems to rattle. While it can’t be heard from my truck, it might make enough noise to be bothersome if it were on a drivable vehicle instead of a towable RV. I solved this by using a couple bungee cords. All in all I am please so far. ... show more

  • I've had it for almost 4 years
Size: Hitch cargo basket with hitch stabilizer
I've had this thing for about 4 years and I've put a pretty good beating on it and it's held up fairly well. The biggest downside is it does not fit the receiver correctly so it's got some wobble to it even with the included plate. Other than that though it's been through winter and salt. Carried my bike and tires for my truck. Hit a trees and ben dragged across rocky ground on steep angles by four wheeling. Little bit of rust starting now (not to bad) and I had to bend it back into place after hitting a tree but she's still going. I also it like the fact you have the ability to fold the sides up or keep them folded down and use it in either fashion. Also nice to be able to fold the rack itself up so it's out of the way. For what I spend on it I'm more than happy. ... show more

  • Great, sturdy carrier with lots of room!
Size: Hitch cargo basket with hitch stabilizer
We recently purchased a 2017 Acadia. When packing for a our first camping trip of the year, we quickly realized the car top carrier bag wasn’t enough to make up for the space we’d lost from the minivan we had previously. But I had an idea... buy a hitch carrier. This one worked great! It’s MASSIVE. And I LOVE the tall sides. Everything was strapped down (straps are not included) and nothing moved at all. We even hit severe weather coming home... everything was great (just wet, but I plan on purchasing a bag for this before our next trip). I love that it folds flat for storage. It also folds up, but it did hit my back trunk door when in that position, so that was a no go. No comment on the assembly (my husband did that), but I didn’t hear him complain once about it so that tells me it was pretty simple. ;) Putting it on the hitch was a breeze. The holes lined up perfectly (I was worried because of a few reviews...). Overall, great product. Well made and I’m positive we will get years of use out of this! ... show more

  • Surpassed my expectations.
Size: Hitch cargo basket with hitch stabilizer
Used this to haul a cooler, chairs and luggage from Michigan to Tennessee and it worked great! There are a few spots that are rusting slightly but I just hope it holds up in the long run.

  • it is very sturdy, not cheaply made.

The carrier is great. I added lights because it covered the car lights. It is a little heavy for a me to put on by myself to put on but that is no problem.
