We purchased this for a 2016 Acura MDX with an installed OEM heavy duty trailer hitch. Our MDX also has OEM roof rails and cross bars but these can only support up to 200 lbs and I wouldn't put over 100 lbs up there as rough roads may cause issues with the roof supports. This was a better solution for bulkier/heavier items too big for the interior. We have used this multiple times for vacations and moving larger items around. Overall assembly took around 20 minutes mainly due to size/weight. I would recommend assembling in the garage or driveway. Materials are very sturdy and thick metal. Fasteners are solid and well made. Instructions were easy enough to follow. Installation/Removal is best done with 2 people but can be done alone if careful ( I would recommend a jack stand to help with). I bought a large wrench/socket to help loosen/tighten the retaining bolt to the trailer hitch. There are NO safety chains to attach. The pin/bolt are not attached so be careful where you place the clip when raising/lowering the platform. When lowered access to the MDX's rear hatch is easy with plenty of clearance. The package comes with a stabilizer plate and U bolt which I would use for heavier loads (this will increase your install time of course). You cannot open the MDX's rear hatch with the platform raised (with the sides retracted) as there isn't enough clearance, easy enough to lower the platform and raise as needed, just remember to put the pin into the correct hole when the platform is raised. I have used this in the rain (with a tarp and bungee cords) and it worked well, nothing got wet. Size is perfect for an oversized cooler and a couple of larger boxes to secure heavy/bulky items. I have hauled end tables and smaller appliances. I would use the included stabilizer plate on loads over 200 lbs as the tongue bolt is on the rear hole and it fits into the hitch only a few inches, it does not extend beyond the hitch opening under the car. Sides are easy enough to raise and lower with the snap pins and this makes loading super easy. Visibility isn't impacting by the carrier at all, depends on what you put in it. This does freak out the backup sensors and when reversing your visibility is considered to be gone, even empty it is mostly blocked. Remember what your total load capacity is and the hitches tongue weight limits. When going down the road and hitting a bump or dip your weight down-force will be slightly multiplied so avoid the stated max weights. This impacted MPG but I believe it was more weight than aerodynamics. Due to being able to put on/take off relatively quickly this expands the utility of your SUV/car greatly. Remember your vehicle's length will change when using this and reduced visibility/sensors for backing up. I would recommend this and wish I had gotten one sooner!

Solid cargo carrier, well worth the price

We decided on a hitch based carrier versus a rooftop carrier for a road trip recently. Decided to go with this one and it held up amazingly through a 2200 mi road trip from Wi to Florida and back. It arrived packaged well. The ends of the box were double layered for protection during shipping. Parts were strapped together to prevent things from moving around and causing damage during shipping and all of the hardware was included in a small box with washer and nuts paired with their corresponding bolt. Reviewing a lot of carrier options a common complaint is the instructions. This one has rather simplistic instructions but I found by doing some initial prep and studying they were ok. I took inventory of the hardware and studied the diagram well before jumping in. Overall assembly was pretty straightforward and I was able to manage it solo. I like that the nuts are locking nuts but I did add a little loctite blue for added insurance that a but wouldnt work it's self loose during travel. The hinges for the rails wrap around completely and I found them to be solid. Another common complaint I see with this style carrier is the locking pin that holds the rails up is rather loose and can come undone. For this one I found that they again were very solid and the springs in them have plenty of tension that it makes pulling them back during setup a little hard. I had no issues with them through out the trip. The kit includes a stabilizer bracket but I opted for a third party one that had rubberized coating that I figured would help with noise. With the stabilizer there was no up and down movement. There was a slight side to side movement so I used a shim between the shank and receiver wall to tighten that up. After that there was zero movement and we couldn't tell we had it on the back of our vehicle Maybe the only con with this one is that once in the loaded position it sits too close for us to open our lift gate. I knew this when I made the purchase and did so intentionally. The ones with enough room to open the gate seem to put too much stress on the shank and risk collapsing as I seen in some pics in reviews. I liked the additional integrity of it being closer to the vehicle In terms of size it holds a lot. We fit 3 large 18 gallon rubbermaid tubs side by side filled with clothes, etc plus room on the sides for other items. It's just slightly too narrow to fit four with lids but we found we had plenty of space for our stuff. Of course make sure to balance the load with the heaviest in the center. We opted for an additional storage bag for additional protection against the elements. It fit well and offered plenty of room and kept everything bone dry as we drove through some really severe weather Not know how much I would block my taillights I did purchase a set of led taillights for add safety that I attached as seen in the pics using some self tapping screws. While on vacation and not using the tack we simply locked it in the upright position which is also very convenient. I found that it was easy to attach by myself when it's in the upright position. I did wrap a strap around it and attached it to the safety chain holes on our hitch in case we lost the basket. You can see in the pics I was also able to secure our dog kennel to the back without issue. All in all I'm very pleased with the rack. It feels very solid and had no issues on our trip. I would check at every stop and nothing worked itself loose or at any point felt like something shifted and could have been lost. 100% recommend Link to carrier bag I purchased. Update: made it across the US over 2000 miles. Began sagging and swaying which resulted in a bolt being worn down. Might have been catastrophic if I drove the country twice, but it did make it over 2000 miles with 100-200 pounds so I only downgraded one star to 4. Overall it is satisfactory quality for the price. I wouldn't call it heavy duty but for local moves only or light cross country loads with the caveat you better watch it. I tied a rope to my roof rack to minimize side to side swaying on bumps. Welds held. Will need to replace a bolt and see how I can get a product to raise it higher on my SUV for the future. If you don't have a high truck, I do suggest buying one of those Curt raisers. Overall I am happy with the purchase so far. Pros: promptly delivered, well packaged, new item, side rails are taller than other products, many positive reviews, reasonably inexpensive, I drove around town with it on in the flat position and had absolutely zero issues, no rattle even without stabilizer I could hear, hardware seems adequate (contrary to reviews on here), I didn't get any defects in manufacturing I'm aware of, overall initial quality seems fair for the price Cons: no directions, came with several parts it doesn't seem like are needed, not able to figure out how it folds up so far, brand on the box and the item is different than what is shown on Amazon, general Chinese sketchiness such as no directions and some very negative reviews, install video isn't close up, have to use your intuition, will need a socket wrench to take it off, install is much easier with two people, does scratch easily and may rust easily to people's point on here, doesn't seem like the 400 pound limit is probably accurate (I don't plan on putting more than 100-200)

Sturdy!

Sturdy! I put this together in about an hour, it really wasn’t that hard. You need a socket set, preferably with deep sockets, and a wrench. I used 11/16 and 3/4, and they worked. You have to be careful when you are following the directions. They’re OK, but not great. The one piece of advice they gave, which I followed, is to not tighten any of the bolts until you have everything the way you want it. I didn’t use the spring activated stabilizer, because I used the U bolt on stabilizer. I couldn’t figure out how and where they wanted me to install it. After about an hour of investigation, I think what you are supposed to do with this part is to use in INSTEAD of your hitch pin. At least that’s what I think. One reviewer noted the basket was very wobbly. This is true. But once you put the hitch stabilizer on, it Becomes very solid. A little bit of movement, but no big deal. Another reviewer wrote how when he put it together the basket was at an angle. He posted a photo of his carrier and it’s sat at about a 30° angle. The only thing I can think of is that when he tightened up the nuts on hitch stabilizer, he didn’t tighten the nuts equally, and as a result, caused the whole basket to be at that angle. The other two things I have done are based upon other reviewers ideas, which I am passing on to you. One is to add a wood shim to the receiver once it’s in place. This takes up the remaining side to side movement. The other is to address the concern about rust developing. I took the carrier to the car wash and with high pressure, gave it a thorough cleaning to remove any residual oils and dust from the manufacturing process. Once dried in the sun for a few hours, I used a can of rustoleum high gloss black enamel spray paint and gave it a light top coat, including all the bolts, which I’m sure are just steel and would rust over time. I taped the reflectors and pull pins as I didn’t want them painted. I’m very pleased with the purchase, but haven’t used it yet, just put it together, but after looking at probably no less than 30 of these in various price ranges and am pleased with what I bought. We’re going to use it for various camping trips when we want to take our kayaks. Once we finish a few trips, I’ll do an update on this review.

Incredibly easy to assemble, a bit of a challenge to hitch mount by yourself

I am very excited to have this product, and I only wish I had purchased one sooner! It is incredibly easy to assemble, you'll need just a few hand tools and about an hour. It also seemed lighter weight than I expected, which is great since I assembled and installed it myself. It feels sturdy, and appears weather resistant, I just haven't owned it long enough as of this writing to be able to speak to these attributes. With a 500-pound rating, it should be able to handle all of my spare cargo needs. This thing is great for firewood, camping, big grocery runs, dump runs, etc. It is very easy to fold up once installed in the hitch, and is completely out of my rear view mirror in my small SUV when folded upright. I installed the optional (included) anti-rattle spring. It took a few tries but once I got it set, I never heard or felt the rack in the back of the vehicle. Between this and my roof box, I now have enough cargo space to rival a small truck bed (which is WAY cheaper than buying a truck)! The only difficulty I found is getting the bolt holes aligned with your hitch receiver pin holes, if you're putting this on your hitch yourself. It's easy enough to lift into your receiver, but it is heavy enough that getting it aligned to the couple of millimeters needed to get your hitch pin/bolt threaded neatly proved tough. Having a 2nd pair of eyes makes things much easier. Because of the heavy duty bolt included in the kit that secures it to your hitch, getting it off of your hitch isn't exactly a simple task either. It's not rocket science but is time consuming. Time will tell how it holds up long term, but all things considered I am very happy with it so far!

Be careful how you attach this to your vehicle

I used it once, and then I had to cut it off the back of my car with a reciprocating saw. Be careful of how you thread the bolt into the anti-rattling nut. After mounting the carrier in the hitch, the bolt seized up inside the locknut, which is inside the hitch. I'm not ruling out operator error, but I didn't have any issue threading the bolt through the locknut to begin with. Either way, it didn't come off easily. I had to literally cut it off the back of my vehicle, and then cut the bolt off from inside the hitch. I'm hopeful that I may be able to weld the frame back together and still get some use out of this without the anti-rattle device. I guess the lesson is to be very careful how you attach this thing, or it may become a permanent part of your vehicle.

Meets expectations!

After 20 years I finally gave up my Expedition and bought a Murano. This rack is able to handle 90% of the dirty jobs I used to need a big SUV for. So for my first job I bought about 450 lbs. of bagged manure, potting soil, and fertilizer. Easy to load, smooth riding home, didn’t rattle or wobble, easy to unload. No complaints here.
