I purchased another scanner from Amazon that was basically useless for determining why my Toyota was unable to turn over with a new battery, alternator, spark plugs, etc.. Positives: -Large text screen is backlit and easy enough to read. -Cable is long enough so you're not having to climb down under the dashboard whilst using the device. -Even with all the menu options, navigation is easy thanks to all the buttons on the device, not forcing you to use the same button for a bunch of functions. Negatives: -Not a touch screen device. Even at $39.99 (when reviewed), these days you'd expect even a very basic touch screen. -Only reads codes and cannot interact with the car's computer for additional information Overall: -This is definitely a better option than a device that requires an app for your phone. Recommended. This is a good tool to have when diagnosing and reading your car's codes when fixing it at home. Why waste time going to a shop if you’re able to do it at home? What I like about this ODB scanner is that it’s all-in-one. Everything is on the device, so I’m not fumbling for my phone, getting my phone dirty, or even searching for my phone and downloading a sketchy app. Having everything all in one makes it easier to use whenever I need without being dependent on anything else. Usage, it’s easy to use, plug-in, and do the check. Reading the codes is easy, and you can concentrate on those fixes for your vehicle.

We have purchased several code readers in the past. So far this is the best one we've used. We had no trouble reading the code. Bad news is now we need to have some major work done replacing the shift solenoid in our 2015 Chrysler Town & country. But at least we know what it is now. Might take us a while to figure out all the other operations but it did come with a nice instruction booklet. Handy storage bag also. Good value for the money, I think everyone needs a code reader with all the fancy electronics in today's cars.

This is a handy little diagnostic tool. It's very simple to operate. Find your OBD2 port on your vehicle - it's usually somewhere near the driver's side, under the dash. Turn the vehicle's ignition on and the scanner will automatically connect to your system. The instruction manual is clearly written and the user interface is friendly enough for most people to understand. Use the arrow buttons to navigate to the test you want to perform and then press OK. To go backwards in a menu, press the "Exit" button. There's a lot of information you can get from your OBD2 port. For example, move the cursor to the "Read Codes" icon, press "OK" and all error codes, if any, will show up on the screen. If it's an error code that can be cleared, you go to the "Erase Codes" menu and clear it from there. Overall, this is a great little diagnostic tool for novices and pros alike. If the error is something you can't fix yourself, at least you'll have a little knowledge when you bring it in to your mechanic. Definitely recommended. My rating method: 1 star - terrible. I wouldn't consider buying it. 2 stars - marginal at best. Doesn't meet the minimum requirements or quality to be useful. Buy it at your own risk. 3 stars - average. Meets the quality and requirements for a product of this type but is nothing out of the ordinary. If the price is good, I'd probably buy it. 4 stars - better than average. Exceeds the typical quality of a product of this type and has a few extra features not usually found on other products of this type. I'd buy it. 5 stars - exceptional - far exceeds the quality of products of this type. Hard to beat the quality and features included. Best value for the money. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.

Because I tend to drive older, used cars, it's a pretty common occurrence that the "check engine" light comes on. At least 75% of the time, when I take it to a mechanic, he attaches a device like this, turns off the light, and says, "Let's see if it comes back on." It usually didn't. Eventually, I felt bad about bothering my local mechanic, so I got one of these OBD2 (sometimes called OBD II) readers and started turning off the check engine light myself. The last one that I had, though, was pretty plain-jane. The screen was black-and-white, and very limited in the information that it would share. It did the job, but just barely. This reader is a HUGE step up. The big color screen has multiple options. As you choose each one of these, more screens and options come up, allowing you to investigate many of the settings on your car. With all of this, it might sound like the screens are confusing, but there is a very well-written and very thorough user manual included with the device, and it makes things simple. Heck, within seconds of the first time I plugged it into the car, I found the setting that allows the device to display the car's VIN. Very convenient. Not only is the device itself a work of art, but it comes very nicely packaged. Inside the secure and attractive box, the unit is stored in a velvet pouch (no kidding). It's just a quality product all the way around. If you have a need for one of these readers, you will be pleased with this one!

Tried unit on 2 vehicles. plugged in and unit powered up. (display illuminated) no menu option came up on display. vehicle was off and turned on. waited several minutes. even drove the vehicles. so disappointed and now I'm off to look for another company.
