    • Reasonable price for functionality
Considered a scanner for several years. Problem is there are so many--dozens and dozens of different models, and some are very expensive. A friend with an Autel recommended the brand. Bought this in March 2023. I help take care of a number of vehicles for family and friends. Databases are easy to download via wifi and I have Jeep, Ford, Land Rover, and now Volvo. These are large files and there seems to be a lot of memory. Operating system is Android. Could have spent thousands, but the Maxicom MK808S does most anything I might need. There is Autel software to put on a computer that acts as an interface between the Autel and the home network. Easy to print reports after scanning. Oldest car worked on is a 2000 Range Rover. But a car that old has fewer systems to test. It did test ABS that has been firing when it should not. In contrast, there are many tests that can be run on a 2022 Jeep. Learned, however, that Jeep has protective software in newer cars that won't allow most scanners to reset codes, etc. Instead, Jeep requires hidden bypass connectors to be accessed in the dashboard and/or pay some sort of fee to an on-line service that will allow code resets. Haven't needed that yet. Car is under warranty and the goal is to know what's acting up before going to the dealer. As a home mechanic, I'm finding new tests to run and learning. Recently loaded Volvo to diagnose a friend's 2016 XC60 with a battery that goes dead from sitting. The Autel has a nice battery test program. First, it assessed the charging system with the car on. Then the Autel shut off the car and monitored battery drain with headlights on and heater fan running for four minutes. Screen instructions were very clear on this testing. Autel reported on screen that the battery is not only low, but failing. Surely the much more expensive units do more, but for a few hundred dollars this one has paid for itself already. ... show more

    • Sweet spot for price vs capability for a DIY guy
I probably have close to a half dozen OBDII scanners in my garage. In retrospect, I should have just bought the MK808S in the first place. It's the only one that I use now and although it seemed like a lot of money for a tool to maintain my own cars, it really is pretty cost effective since even 10 year old cars need a solid scan tool to perform many repairs. The only thing that I might have liked better is if I would have splurged for the Bluetooth over the cable - but considering my use of it, the cable is fine. This thing runs diagnostics for everything on the car and the bi-direction capability to command certain actuators and run actives tests is just great. I originally figured that I would just skip the annual updates (which run about $100/yr) since I am a DIY'er and don't necessarily need so many updates. However, I will likely pay the money when it comes up because Autel is very regular about updating the scanner itself and of course, adding many vehicle updates. ... show more

- Bought at a good price on Cyber-Monday - Tech Support has responded to my questions in a timely manner. - Have had this device for over 4 months and there have been several updates already, for various auto manufacturers and for features/interface of the tool itself. So Autel appears to be constantly improving the tool and vehicle coverage - I am a DIY / home user and have found the tool pretty intuitive to use. It proved very helpful in troubleshooting a bad shift solenoid to confirm it was a defective solenoid and not a problem with the PCM - This tool displayed active DTC's for the SIR system on another vehicle, which my old OBDII scanner could not access - It would be nice to have the option to graph multiple PID's individually rather than merged together as this unit does. But I suspect that is likely due to the limited screen space as opposed to the "$1,000 and up" tools with larger screens. For a smaller tool at this price point, merged PID's are better than none at all. - It would be nice to have a search function for PID's when looking for specific ones to display rather than scrolling through all of them to find one(s) you're looking for. You can sort the PID's alphabetically, which does help when looking for the desired PID(s). - Have encountered one bi-directional test I cannot get to run. The error message simply says to make sure all required conditions are met. Would be nice if the tool would advise as to what condition(s) are not being met. So I emailed Tech Support the VIN of the vehicle today to see if they can provide details on what conditions the tool is looking for. - Would buy again ... show more
