I bought the Genius5 after neglecting a relatively new battery in my motorcycle. Due to weather and travel, I often have long gaps between rides. Unfortunately, one of these gaps was long enough to damage the battery. I didn’t realize that batteries need a minimal charge to avoid sulfation, and mine had become severely discharged. Although my NOCO GB40 starter worked fine, the battery wasn’t holding a charge even after a day of riding. Instead of immediately replacing the battery, I decided to try saving it with the Genius5. After charging the battery with the Genius5, I tested it with a battery analyzer, which reported it as damaged. I then ran the desulfation process, and afterward, the analyzer showed the battery was in good condition. I repeated the tests several days later to be sure, and the battery still appeared to be in good health. Now, I keep the Genius5 connected to my motorcycle whenever I’m not riding for more than a week, and I haven’t had any battery issues since. I still carry the GB40 in my panniers, just in case, but I haven’t needed to use it lately. Some notes on the desulfation process: The desulfation process seems to send voltage peaks, and you may hear some bubbling inside the battery. This happened to me, and from what I’ve read, it’s normal as long as there’s not too much bubbling and no vapors, heating, or swelling of the battery. The entire process takes a while, so it’s unrealistic to monitor it the whole time. However, I recommend watching it for the first 20 minutes to ensure the battery noises aren’t increasing. After that, you can leave it running while staying nearby, just in case something goes wrong. A final note on this process: because of the voltage peaks, I didn’t run it with the battery connected to the motorcycle to avoid any potential damage to the circuits. For regular maintenance charging, I do keep the battery connected. The Genius5 is designed to work with standard batteries, gel, and even lithium ones. The one I used was a Gel Yuasa, and I’m pleased with the results. I also purchased the NOCO cables (GC002 X-Connect M6) to make it easier to connect the charger without removing the seat. The cables were a bit expensive but seem well-constructed and are quite convenient. Final thoughts: If you have a vehicle that sits unused for extended periods, and this happens frequently, then this charger is ideal for you. However, if you only need it once a year or less, it might be easier and cheaper to disconnect the battery from the vehicle while you’re away to prevent discharging. For my use case, the Genius5 has been worth it, and I’d definitely buy it again. ... show more

This charger/tender worked well to "revive" a ~80Ah lead acid battery that sat in a low state of charge for nearly a year. After an initial 2.5 hour cycle in repair mode, followed by a higher amp charge from an older/larger charger, a noticeable improvement in battery performance was observed. A shorter repair cycle, about 30 minutes total, restored some capacity on another lead acid battery still in use. There are cheaper desulfator-only options, of questionable reliability/longevity, so the additional features offered on this model were cost-effective for my intended usage. While I have not yet used this as a tender/maintainer for any length of time, the cabling to and from the charger are long enough to reach from one side of a car to the other. This unit did not seem to produce much heat in repair mode with ~75F ambient temp. In auto charge mode between 25% and 75%, it was warm to the touch. I'll have to try a longer charge period to see if it heats up further. UPDATE: after using repair & charge mode on a flat battery for a few hours, this unit can get fairly hot. Using this on a flat surface so air can get underneath is a good idea. This product did not come with a manual in the box, just the warranty booklet. Tracking down a user manual on the manufacturer's site did not require much effort. The 6V and repair mode are not activated by quick presses of the single button. Pressing & holding for a few seconds activates these extra modes from standby. Some form of documentation in the box would have been more convenient than going to the website, but I digress. ... show more

11/17/2022: Saved me from my very tired self, once again... totally dead battery in my car after leaving the trunk open slightly for a week... hooked this up after giving it a cursory jump with the TackLife T8 and left it to do it's thing. My battery is now in maintenance mode. What a wonderful helper. 4/29/2021: Every time I start my mower I am in awe all over again. The battery performs better than it did last year and the year before. My mower starts quickly now without hesitation and I am so thankful. For someone else, this may not be your solution, but for me, a senior on her own, this was far easier than replacing the battery, and now I have it to use for my auto battery that doesn't get that much use. 4/20/2021: Took a bit of work to repair the damage to my lawn tractor battery that I caused, but I'll be darned, it worked! Ran it through a charge cycle that didn't seem to do anything and I wasn't optimistic, but I was persistent. Did another charge cycle that it completed, I think, and then the next day ran the repair. The following day I did yet another charge cycle and tried to start it up and I'll be darned, it worked! All the damage I did, my negligence, this great gadget fixed. Nothing else I own, Battery Tender, Jump n Carry, etc. would do anything. I bought a different jump starter, TackLife T8 Pro, that actually got it started but all that did was show me how truly dead the battery was. As soon as I turned off my mower it wouldn't start again. Noco Genius5, and the steps I took, solved that. It wasn't fun since I'm disabled, and it was time consuming, but the end result is what I wanted and needed. Very satisfied customer. A note about the manual... boy does it need to be fixed. Nothing matched what went on at any stage of my repair and charging. My persistence and a lot of finger crossing made up for really horrible instructions. 4/11/2021: My lawn tractor battery is in a disgraceful state and it's my fault, combined with continual rain since October that prevented me, due to poor health, from taking the steps necessary for year-end maintenance. Big surprise, totally dead battery with 0 volts that nothing I had on hand could resurrect. Tried jumping it with my Jump n' Carry and it didn't. Next tried jumping with the TackLife T8 Pro and, boom, it started. Wouldn't restart and maintain the start so I grabbed the NOCO Genius5 that I bought at the same time as the TackLife. Yesterday I was very discouraged because lights on the Genius5 didn't appear to be working per the manual. Tried it just now and it's responding, led-wise, as it should and appears to be charging. Truth told, totally my fault, I should be buying a new battery, but, physically, I can't do what it takes to do that. Single senior here and my son is on the other side of the country under no-travel orders, so my life is what it is. I must get by whatever means. Really hoping this works. If I can get it charged again I'll ride this battery as long as I can and then get a new one. ... show more

    • A versatile, compact charger for your car battery

The NOCO Genius 5 is a very compact device that does a great job charging my car battery. There's no digital readout but it's easy to read that the battery is more than 25%, 50%, or 75% charged, and over time, 80%-90% charged and in trickle mode. At full charge the lights will indicate 100%. It's very easy to use. Select your battery type and attach the positive clamp to the positive battery terminal. Ideally you then connect the negative clamp to the car frame or a metal bracket for ground. In my case, though, doing so didn't work. The NOCO would not recognize and read the battery. That can happen when the parts you've grounded to are painted or coated, so the fix was to attach the negative clamp to the negative battery terminal. After doing so the charge worked fine. There's built-in intelligence so it's hard to screw up. You can't overcharge because the battery in trickle mode won't let you do so, and if you leave it connected long-term, it will continue to charge as needed to keep a full charge, but won't do any damage by overcharging. If you choose the wrong battery type, apparently it will know that too and it won't start charging at all. Also, btw, if you have a car battery that's fully discharged and therefore not visible to the NOCO, you can put the charger into a "forced mode" to start charging. All pretty impressive features and, when you need it, it's a great device to own. Two final comments: the charger does not come with a carrying case but there are various options online that are sized to this particular model. I will post a separate review of the one I purchased. Lastly, I did have an issue with the first charger I received. It just would not recognize my car battery. My request to return it was quickly authorized and the replacement unit I purchased later on worked totally fine. ... show more

    • Resurrected a dead battery overnight

My interstate battery went completely when I went returned from a 6 week trip. Tried jump starting by using my other car but failed. Noco is one of the few chargers that can charge a completely dead battery. Watched a project farm youtube video on car battery chargers ( see chart at 18m29s of the video) before buying. I purchased the 5A one due to time constraint ( charged 75% in 8 hours ). You can buy the 2A version or 1A version if you have all the time and just want to keep batteries fully charged. I let it charge overnight and had a fully functional battery in the morning. This happens to me whenever I go on long trips ( 4 weeks + ). With a rechargeable jump starter, you are limited by the battery life of the starter which is only 3-4 years after which most batteries fail. The wall charger hopefully will last a long longer. Saved me a lot of time - No need to drive the car around after jump starting to get some charge into the battery. Just charge overnight and done. Love it. ... show more

The item is portable and small enough to fit in anywhere in our garage. The cable length is decent, and I never run into any issue. It is very quiet when charging, you just have to connect to the red terminal first and then black terminal. Then you turn on the power and choose the battery type. Once the charging is complete, turn off the power, then disconnect black first and then red. AI recommended that I get an AGM battery for my SUV and failed to note that my car's alternator won't fully charge the AGM battery, that's why I'm getting this item to top the AGM battery off once a month. I thought the process would be more annoying, but it is not as bad with this charger. ... show more
