I bought the Genius5 after neglecting a relatively new battery in my motorcycle. Due to weather and travel, I often have long gaps between rides. Unfortunately, one of these gaps was long enough to damage the battery. I didn’t realize that batteries need a minimal charge to avoid sulfation, and mine had become severely discharged. Although my NOCO GB40 starter worked fine, the battery wasn’t holding a charge even after a day of riding. Instead of immediately replacing the battery, I decided to try saving it with the Genius5. After charging the battery with the Genius5, I tested it with a battery analyzer, which reported it as damaged. I then ran the desulfation process, and afterward, the analyzer showed the battery was in good condition. I repeated the tests several days later to be sure, and the battery still appeared to be in good health. Now, I keep the Genius5 connected to my motorcycle whenever I’m not riding for more than a week, and I haven’t had any battery issues since. I still carry the GB40 in my panniers, just in case, but I haven’t needed to use it lately. Some notes on the desulfation process: The desulfation process seems to send voltage peaks, and you may hear some bubbling inside the battery. This happened to me, and from what I’ve read, it’s normal as long as there’s not too much bubbling and no vapors, heating, or swelling of the battery. The entire process takes a while, so it’s unrealistic to monitor it the whole time. However, I recommend watching it for the first 20 minutes to ensure the battery noises aren’t increasing. After that, you can leave it running while staying nearby, just in case something goes wrong. A final note on this process: because of the voltage peaks, I didn’t run it with the battery connected to the motorcycle to avoid any potential damage to the circuits. For regular maintenance charging, I do keep the battery connected. The Genius5 is designed to work with standard batteries, gel, and even lithium ones. The one I used was a Gel Yuasa, and I’m pleased with the results. I also purchased the NOCO cables (GC002 X-Connect M6) to make it easier to connect the charger without removing the seat. The cables were a bit expensive but seem well-constructed and are quite convenient. Final thoughts: If you have a vehicle that sits unused for extended periods, and this happens frequently, then this charger is ideal for you. However, if you only need it once a year or less, it might be easier and cheaper to disconnect the battery from the vehicle while you’re away to prevent discharging.     • Resurrected a dead battery overnight

My interstate battery went completely when I went returned from a 6 week trip. Tried jump starting by using my other car but failed. Noco is one of the few chargers that can charge a completely dead battery. Watched a project farm youtube video on car battery chargers ( see chart at 18m29s of the video) before buying. I purchased the 5A one due to time constraint ( charged 75% in 8 hours ). You can buy the 2A version or 1A version if you have all the time and just want to keep batteries fully charged. I let it charge overnight and had a fully functional battery in the morning. This happens to me whenever I go on long trips ( 4 weeks + ). With a rechargeable jump starter, you are limited by the battery life of the starter which is only 3-4 years after which most batteries fail. The wall charger hopefully will last a long longer. Saved me a lot of time - No need to drive the car around after jump starting to get some charge into the battery. Just charge overnight and done. Love it. ... show more

    • Yeah so don't mix up your fused alligator cables if you buy different models

I bought a Genius1 and Genius5. The latter failed on first use due to my mistake mixing up the alligator clips during unboxing. I didn't look closely enough to notice that the 1 and 5 aren't just feature levels but are current ratings in Amps. The proprietary connectors are identical but the 1A unit has a 2A fuse and the 5A unit has a 10A fuse, and they're on the battery side of the connectors not the device side, so obviously the 2A fuse correctly blew when I tried using the 5A unit. They work fine after fixing my careless mix-up, but I'd like these better if the device or fuse holder were marked with a recommended fuse rating, or the connectors couldn't mate with the wrong device, or the fuse holder were on the device side of the proprietary connector, or the unit came with spare fuses, or the fuse ratings were included in the online user guide, or the user guide were included in the box, or the safety guide were printed in a typeface legible to adult human eyes. Anyway, keep your cables together with the devices and don't mix em up. ... show more

This charger/tender worked well to "revive" a ~80Ah lead acid battery that sat in a low state of charge for nearly a year. After an initial 2.5 hour cycle in repair mode, followed by a higher amp charge from an older/larger charger, a noticeable improvement in battery performance was observed. A shorter repair cycle, about 30 minutes total, restored some capacity on another lead acid battery still in use. There are cheaper desulfator-only options, of questionable reliability/longevity, so the additional features offered on this model were cost-effective for my intended usage. While I have not yet used this as a tender/maintainer for any length of time, the cabling to and from the charger are long enough to reach from one side of a car to the other. This unit did not seem to produce much heat in repair mode with ~75F ambient temp. In auto charge mode between 25% and 75%, it was warm to the touch. I'll have to try a longer charge period to see if it heats up further. UPDATE: after using repair & charge mode on a flat battery for a few hours, this unit can get fairly hot. Using this on a flat surface so air can get underneath is a good idea. This product did not come with a manual in the box, just the warranty booklet. Tracking down a user manual on the manufacturer's site did not require much effort. The 6V and repair mode are not activated by quick presses of the single button. Pressing & holding for a few seconds activates these extra modes from standby. Some form of documentation in the box would have been more convenient than going to the website, but I digress. ... show more

    • Revived my battery

I bought a used 2022 Honda Ridgeline with ~7,000 miles on it some months back. It was a "dealer demo car" and was well-maintained as a result. Now, it's got around 12,000 miles on it. One day, I left the lights on too long with the ignition off, and had the radio playing. Stupid on my part, but my battery didn't have enough charge to deliver the amps needed to turn the engine over. I bought a Noco GB40, and it worked well - it'd start my truck when needed. Yesterday, it didn't. I guess the battery had degraded too much, so I was shopping for new batteries when the sticker shock hit me. Given the age of my truck, I thought it would be silly to replace the battery. Someone recommended the Noco Genius5, so I gave it a shot. Amazon's same-day delivery got it to me quickly, and I basically hooked it up to the battery, plugged it in, set it to AGM mode, and let it go to work. I waited several hours for the charger light to show "solid green", indicating it was fully charged. I started up my truck; it sounded better than the day I bought it. However, on the dash, it had a note about an "emissions problem". My scan tool showed a permanent code with the Transmission Control Module and a bunch of other temporary codes. Since I didn't have any codes before, I figured I may have freaked out the electronics by charging the battery while the battery was hooked up to the truck, or maybe by touching the terminals out of sequence when removing the cables. Either way, I removed the battery from my truck, hooked up the Genius5, and set it to "repair mode". My truck had low mileage when I bought it, at about a year old, which likely meant that it say for a while when not in use. Maybe that could have led to sulfation or stratification, which could have meant it wouldn't charge as effectively from the alternator. I also wanted to remove the battery to allow the computers to reset in the truck. If it was still throwing codes after that, I'd bring it into the dealer. This morning, when I woke up, I noticed the Genius5 was in standby mode, meaning the repair mode had finished. I started the Genius5 back up, and set it to AGM mode again -- it took about a minute, but it said the battery was good to go with a solid green light. I Installed the battery back in my truck, fired it up, and I kid you not, it sounded better than ever -- less strained, more powerful, and all of the codes were gone. My truck had a freakout -- not due to this device, I'm sure, but likely due to me doing something stupid. It's rare for me to review a product so quickly. This thing is amazing, has lots of neat accessories available for it, and saved me money. I'll continue using it to prolong my batteries and save me money in the long-run. If you're on the fence, this little device is absolutely legit. 10/10 would recommend. ... show more
