  • A good light weight option, not for heavy work outs
Style: Nautilus R618
I bought this bike at the end of 2020 in hopes to getting back into exercising. I have to say it work out pretty well for me. I can recommend getting this bike but I do have some caveats that you might want to think about. Let's go over the pros first. Not exactly a pro, but putting the bike together was no the worst. I was able to do it mostly by myself and got together in about 5 hours over two days. Of the machines I have put together I would say it was not too bad; though not something I would want to repeat (more on that later) I think the price is pretty good, I bought it for $800 and it has stayed that price for 2 years since then. The resistance on the bike was also good. I never used the official programs with the bike but I did use the Explore the World app which simulates rides throughout the world. I would say that the app was little bit limited (4 or 6 miles tracks that would just loop around). Also they didn't have a lot of the different locations. At one point the app would just stop working after 40 minutes into the ride. So I ended up just using one or two the free programs and stopped subscribing. I started with 20-30 minutes exercises and within a year I was going over a hour on some days. Not long in to the time with the bike, there were some noticeable noises with the fly wheel and the pedals. A little lubrication was able to solve that problem. Just over a year of regular use (I did 40 min (on average) workouts at level 25, 5 days a week) Just around a year of use, I started hearing a thud when I was pedaling. I checked some of the nuts on pedals and they were pretty loose so I tightened those up. The thud would return abut go away again after tightening, but then one morning 20 mins in: crack. The right pedal came broke off. The crank arm cracked at the attachment. This was some thing that had come assembled and so it was not part of putting it together. I looked into it and I thought that it could probably be replaced pretty easily and so I called up Nautilus. I have to say they were very helpful and I have no issues with their support people. She walked me through getting bike registered and sending in photos of what the issue was. The solution was to send me out a new bike. Now of course that should pretty good, I am getting a new bike. However, that also meant that I would now have to put the bike together again and while it was not that bad, I still would rather not do it again. There was also the issue of getting rid of the other bike prior to getting the new one (space was an issue). This was towards the end March of last year. It was not until May that I got around to getting the bike assembled and back to regular workouts again. I kept up with the nuts and made sure things were not getting loose like before and also made sure to lubricate appropriately. The metal on metal sound didn't really come back and in general it was pretty quiet. But then, just like March of last year, one morning at the end of January, the right pedal broke off just like it did last time. The difference this time was that I didn't really have any of the sounds preceding it; so maybe they were not related. At this point I was frustrated. The solution again from Nautilus was probably going to be something similar and really didn't want to have put it together again. I would also have to find a way to get rid of this bike again. In the end I decided to move from it. I feel like I use it a lot, probably more than the average user of these bikes. Also my size and the intensity of my workout most likely reveals a designed flaw of the crank attachment. Since when I got the bike I didn't now if I would stick to exercising, I kept my budget on the lower end. Now that I know I will exercise regularly, my wife and I thought we should probably get a higher quality bike. So would I recommend this bike. Yes, if you are working less then 3 days a week for about 40 minutes and weight less than 250lbs I think this bike will be fine. It is rated for 350 lbs, but not sure about the high stress of very intense workouts for someone that big on this bike. (I weighed between 275-290 while using this bike in case you were wondering) It's a light weight option and the $800 price tag speaks to that. Side note: For the new bike, we went with the Matrix R50. We got the lowest end console because the bike itself is very expensive and I don't use the console features a lot. I didn't buy on Amazon so I wouldn't give it a review. I will say so far so good. ... show more

  • Box arrived destroyed… But the bike miraculously survived
Style: Nautilus R618
As you can see from the photos, this bike got hammered by UPS. The delivery driver somehow slid this thing onto my porch without even alerting my dogs, which speaks to me as saying she wanted to get the heck out of Dodge before I saw the damage and made her take it back to her truck. Needless to say, once I did see it after she was long gone, my jaw dropped at the sight of this horribly disfigured package and I seriously feared for the condition of my brand new R618. Parts inside the box had obviously fallen out of the huge hole, because once I got inside the box, there were numerous instances where someone had taped various items to damaged styrofoam pieces. Someone also used a lot of tape in a poor attempt to cover up one of the holes in the box. Notice also the little box that contains the adapter that powers the console. It was buried deep inside the big box and yet has a nice nick in the corner. It appears UPS workers were mad at the world for the effort it took to deliver this to me. I don’t know if Amazon actually looks at these reviews we write. I figure the wait between completion of the review and its posting is just so a bot can scan for f-bombs and such, and no human eyes actually see them. But in case I’m wrong, I hope Amazon decides they need to sit down with UPS and demand they take better care of the many heavy items UPS is paid millions of dollars a year to ship to Amazon customers. This is just ridiculous and happens far too often. To my pleasant surprise, however, my Nautilus R618 arrived in that annihilated box completely unharmed. I couldn’t even find a single scratch. I was unbelievably lucky and still feel like UPS needs to be spanked for their literal disdain towards the careful shipping of a 107lb package. Once I assured myself that all the pieces had arrived intact, I got set up to assemble this as per the very well written instructions. These are thoughtfully arranged and extremely easy to follow. All hardware and tools needed are on a thick square of shrink wrapped cardboard, and even include a few extra parts in case a washer or nut rolls off your hand and ends up beneath your 200lb sofa. Each step is nicely illustrated and I had no trouble at all assembling this bike. In fact, it was actually a joy to put together, if I may say so myself. It took me about 3 hours from start to finish, but I did go slow and deliberately took my time. I’d imagine it could be done in less time than this, however. I plugged it in after assembly was completed and answered the questions on the console. I then adjusted everything to fit me and went on my first ride. It was more than I hoped for and I do feel as though I definitely got my money’s worth. It is very smooth and quiet to ride, the gel bottom seat is comfortable to sit on, and the overall design and build are exactly as you’d expect for a top of the line recumbent bike. Some people are down on the Explore the World app, but I am using it on my daily rides and have had zero problems or issues. Also, my experience with the included Nautilus heart rate monitor has been satisfactory, and I see no need to go out and get an after market heart monitor. The included speakers are a low budget afterthought and probably sound worse than a cheap laptop’s speakers. And that fan? Well, it hardly moves enough air to dissipate human gas (from experience, unfortunately), and you’d be more likely to cool yourself off by waving your hand in front of your face. But these are my only knocks against this bike. It is otherwise a solid investment towards your health. In closing, UPS almost caused me untold grief with how this was delivered to me. What a nightmare it would have been to try and return a 107lb bike and hope it’s replacement arrived in better shape. But I give credit to Nautilus for a packing job that was good enough to protect this bike from the incompetence of UPS. And this review is for what was inside that destroyed box, which I rate a solid 5 stars. Go get you one… ... show more
