I use the Excalibur ll on the wet sand, water at the beach, and dry land. It absolutely hits on targets shallow and deep. With any metal detector, you have to learn how to use it and what it’s telling you. There are multiple different sounds this machine give’s depending on the type of target found. Anyone who owns or is thinking about owning the Excalibur, needs to be patient and learn the machine. Swing speed, keeping the coil parallel to the ground, and almost touching or touching the ground when swinging plays a factor in gaining depth and the response you will get on targets. As far as the quality of this machine, it’s top notch. I’ve never had any problems with the factory knobs, or it leaking. I use a quick charger that tells me when it’s fully charged and I get about 16 hrs of detecting time on a single charge. For those of you who are getting signals for everything and digging a lot of unwanted stuff, or missing good items, you obviously have the discrimination set wrong. I find, gold, silver, and many other great things with this detector. I also own the minelab equinox 800. Another great metal detector. Minelab makes great products. You want to own one of the best machines on the market? Get the professional Minelab Excalibur ll. Very easy to use. Just be patient and learn the machine. Recieved my item and items were used, sand in the box and warranty had someone else’s info written on it from 2022. I have an intl’ flight booked for this Thursday and was planning on taking it with me and don’t have time to deal with waiting on shipping again. Help me

    • Learn to use it.
I researched the top underwater units reading reviews, three different metal detecting forums, reading the owners manual, and Utube vids for about a year before buying my Excal II with a 10' coil. I didn't buy from Amazon as I found a better deal elsewhere. Anyway, you have to learn this machine and take the time to understand what it's telling you. There is a slight learning curve but it doesn't take long. I started off in auto and dug everything even the nulls just to verify what the sounds were telling me and now with a better understanding I'm selective on what I dig which allows me to cover more ground and pass up the less desirable targets. As with any detector you will dig up some trash but this machine allows you to minimize it. I hunt in all-metal/pinpoint as you get a bit more depth then check the target by switching to disc and sweeping again. If I don't get a signal I just clear some sand away and try again. Remember pinpoint runs a bit deeper. I guarantee that the reviewer who wrote about finding a ring with a cheap detector would have also found it with the Excal had they passed the coil over it. All detectors work to an extent and it is the luck of the draw. This is a specialized detector and although it can be used on dry land it's primarily designed for water and wet sand. I can't say enough good things about this machine, it's paid for itself over and over again. Do your research, make sure it's what you want before you buy it. For people considering the Minelab Excalibur II, here is my experience.First the down side, Yes the knobs strip out easily. This is because the click you are accustomed to hearing when turning knobs on and off is barely audible, so we tend to keep turning. There is a cheap easy fix by turning machine upside down so glue does not run into switch. Just use glue to hold knob firm. This worked fine on my knobs. Second, yes the Excalibur is heavy. Now the good side , Iv used this machine in salt and lake water, and it does work flawlessly,I have the jewelry to prove it. Mostly I use it in the dirt, fields and woods. This machine communicates with sound, it talks and sings to you. The more you use it the better it gets. No need to fuss with LCD windows and all the complicated adjustments, I just turn it on and go. This machine is truly for the hardcore searcher. ... show more

I purchased one of these $1198 Minelab Excalibur ll after doing a lot of research and hearing that they were the very best. I used it many times at local beaches for about 3 months and I was unable to find anything worth it, other than tons of hairpins. I also have a $212 land detector and with this I've found 11 rings (2 Gold) and 2 Gold chains in just over 4 months. The knobs (of the Excal) are cheap, the headphones are not good quality and the detector is very heavy. Needles to say I was very disappointed with the Excalibur ll and sold it. I was so excited when I bought it and I really wanted to like it but it just didn't work as expected and I have no reason to recommend it. And no, I'm not new at this, I've been doing it for over 15 years and I've owned just about every popular brand of detectors. ... show more

I am happy with the machine at 400.00 it is only good for beach because it could get WET and camping grounds or any land or mud but until this company makes a better case and external head phone cord and charger connector,adjustment knobs so that you dont have to worry how you have to baby them or they will crumble after short amount of use and it usually happens when you final have off from work or planing on a great vacation . It also seems finding parts i just found a company that seems helpful so far i ordered they say way better knobs ill see. The product is not worth 1500.00 at all . Now if the company would trade up to make the customer happy and make it way easier to get parts and affordable repairs and a longer warranty like 5yers parts 3yr parts and labor and a way better housing and correct the problems i would say a worth of 1300.00 its a American product but it needs the pride now .
