    • Good product, bad shipping
After much, much research I decided to take the plunge on this very expensive vacuum cleaner. I have a very large single story home with a combination of stone, wall-to-wall carpet, and several very expensive hand made Turkish area rugs. This vacuum performed very well across all surfaces. PROS: works as advertised glides very smoothly across all floor surfaces suction power is amazing did a great job on my hand made rugs with no damage After playing with it for a couple of days, I discovered that I did not have to swap out the power head for the separate hard surface head that comes with it. The power head works great on hard floors as long as you turn off the brush beaters. That is easy to do on this model because the switch button for that function is right on the handle. BUT, I don't have any hardwood so I can't speak to that...only the stone floors. And I have a lot of those. I found if I didn't turn off the brush beaters on the stone floors, it kicked stuff around. The biggest proof of this is that I have 2 cats and any cat owner knows the saga of kitty litter getting thrown around by a vacuum cleaner. Even without the beaters running, the suction is more than strong enough to completely clean the hard surface floors. CONS: changing out the power head to the hard surface head is a little awkward, but not unbearable the accessory brush that comes with it is a little small. It works great but doesn't cover much surface area so it you use if to suck up dust on a large table, etc, it takes longer the bags are hard to find and expensive The biggest problem of all: I paid significantly extra to get the vacuum in 2 days. My other one had just died and I was in a hurry for the replacement. It did arrive in 2 days as promised but it was shipped from Amazon. The Miele box was perfectly designed and packed to protect the vacuum. However, it seems as though Amazon just threw it in a bigger box with the Amazon logo on it, stuffed in 2 pieces of brown paper, and off it went. When we took it out of the actual Miele box, it was obvious that during shipping it got tossed around a lot. Inside the Miele box, all of the styrofoam used to cradle the vacuum was cracked and broken and the Miele box was slightly crushed and twisted. Luckily, the vacuum itself was intact. But the box Amazon shipped it in was much larger than the box Miele packed it in and Amazon didn't use nearly enough paper or packing materials to properly secure it. This is at least the third time I have ordered something from Amazon and my order has arrived this way. At these prices, this is just not acceptable. My recommendation: if you're in the market for a high quality investment like a vacuum, take a look at Miele. They have a lot of models with a wide range of prices corresponding to the features. But if you decide to buy, purchase from somewhere other than Amazon and ask about how the product will be protected for shipping. This is far too expensive an item to take a chance. ... show more

    • These vacuums ROCK!!! Sort of....
THE WHY: So... this canister vac is replacing my Kirby Tradition which I bought new in about 1980-81. One of those door to door salesmen that routinely canvassed small town USA. This one happened to be my older brother, who had a trunk full of new vacs and sold me his demo machine for cheap. Yes, over the years a part or two has been replaced. But what's truly amazing is that parts and service are still available at age 33 or so. But... heavy (it's solid metal), was not built as a HEPA vac (it's been converted to accept a Kirby HEPA bag) plus, we no longer have carpeting and just don't need all of the accessories that accompany the venerable old, but trusty mega-machine. Reviews, recommendations and hands on testing and durability led me to Miele. Enter the Miele canister search. Wow! They don't make it easy as there are at least 8 different (I count 10 on their website) models to choose from. Research was tiring and included a couple of visits to both a local big box company, home store and independent dealer. RESULTS: First and foremost- Decide whether you want a "Powered Hose" or not. To use a floor tool (beater brush unit) that has its own motor you need to have a vac that has the electrical connection running through the hose, handle and extension tube. This one tip will save you hours in making a decision. (Note: powered hoses are slightly heavier). WHICH ONE: Here are some considerations. There are at least (3) three motorized floor tools, so if you only have area rugs you probably don't need the SB-236 power head. But it is lighted. Bag size. Miele bags are not cheap, so some units use the G/N style bag- holds 4.76 qts. The FJM bag holds 3.7 qts. HEPA filter is a separate exhaust filter and well made. I wanted the Miele in part to have a vac that has a multi-ply bag and a separate HEPA cartridge. In this respect the Miele is a standout! I went over my budget but went with the Kona. An "8" series with plenty of features. Use the Miele configurator to customize your vacuum [...] HANDS ON: My purchase came well packaged so Amazon must have read some of the reviews concerning the choice of shipping box. It was super easy to unpack and install filters. Manual is OK but after you install the HEPA filter you won't need it anymore. This little dirt sucker is so easy to use and does a fantastic job on all floor surfaces and area rugs. Comes with the SEB-228 Powerbrush which can be switched on and off from the handle. I wouldn't mind a bigger brush but that can be purchased separately. It just won't fit in the onboard tool caddy. One convenience is the cleaning radius and the ease in retracting the cord. I can shoot through the house in minutes and not have to drag a bunch accessories along with me. Not sure I'll get 30+ years out of this one but I like the warranty, just hope I don't have to use it. May 11, 2014 **UPDATE** Arggghhhh!!!! The switch on the handle went bad so no power brush unless I spend $169.95 plus tax for a whole new hose with handle. Bad design Miele... Have really enjoyed using this the past two years (to the day) and now such a disappointment. Expected better. ... show more
