I recently purchased a metal detector kit for myself and my family and we've had a blast using it on our outings and vacations. The kit comes with a sand sifter scoop and an 8" coil, which makes it easy to search for treasure in a variety of environments.     • Great metal detector for kids
This is a simple, basic metal detector, which is what you would expect for the price. It does work, there seems to be an audible difference in the tone of the beep according to the metal. My son loves using it, I had to go out and randomly bury some quarters for him in the yard as he was mostly fining nails, finding the quarters was exciting. Took him to the park to the sand pit where he found a couple toy cars using it. Not sure on how deep it detects, but seems to be about 4 to 5 inches down, give or take. It is light weight, biggest complaint is having to disassemble it to change the batteries. Instructions could be a lot better, but not a deal breaker, as you learn as you use it. It includes plastic tools, shovel, rake and shifter, they do fulfil their purpose. Overall, it works, it gets my son up and moving doing something he is truly enjoying, and it doesn't cost a small fortune. ... show more

I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to receive this metal detector at no cost to review. Honestly, at under $100 for a metal detector, I didn't expect much. I was pleasantly surprised. Here is my assessment. First of all, it works. It requires two 9 volt batteries (included). Interestingly, you can almost replace the batteries without taking the detector off the handle. Almost. That's a little disappointing. I'd like it where I didn't have to dismantle the unit every time I need to change the battery or put it in its case. Yes, it will not fit in the case fully assembled. The fabric case that comes with it is handy, but could be improved. It won't fit when fully assembled. Further, it would be nice if you could stow the rake, shovel, and sifter in an outside compartment. Unfortunately, the outside compartment is not nearly large enough for this. You can put the unit and the tools in the case, but you can't zip it closed while assembled. Operation is incredibly easy. There are three circles across the screen, each with its associated audible prompt. When you come across metal that is likely not valuable, the left circle lights up and you hear a low pitched sound. As the likelihood of your find being worth something, the circle in the middle and right light up and the audible alarm is higher pitched. I took this over to some property that we purchased next door and quickly heard the highest pitched alarm. Sure enough, when I dug it up I found an aluminum can. Not super valuable, of course, but it is interesting that it can tell the difference between ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The next thing I found was a steel plate. Here's the bottom line. It works and works well. Is it super sensitive? No. But it works. The controls are super easy to use and having the tools is quite helpful. By the way, I didn't think much of the plastic shovel, rake, and sifter but found that they work well.
