    • Superb filter system for all tanks

I used to work as a marine biologist for a major state aquarium. Marineland bio pumps have been around forever. I have been using them for both salt and freshwater tanks in gallon sizes ranging from 10-200. All have worked flawlessly and I will continue to use them as both primary and secondary systems. They are far superior to anything except canister systems BUT in some ways, better than canister filters due to ease of maintenance. I will pick 3-4 of these at one time over a single system any day. Simply, one goes down (breaks), another is still keeping your tank clean and filtered. Please read!!! your fish and you will be much happier and stun everyone else... Advantages: 1) You don't have to shut it down. Pull the cartridge, rinse the new one with distilled water, slowly replace it back in the formed slots. No shutting down valves, seals/o-ring probs etc.. 2) They're pretty quiet but can get the "bubbling noise" when your water level drops below a certain point.Typically just below the flat part of the outlets. It won't hurt it or the fish if it does, it just gets that "noisy" waterfall sound which some, people feel it's soothing. Keeping the water level up is a good thing and remember, those bio wheels add oxygen to the water. Canisters don't. 3) They are easy to fix unless the actual motor goes bad. A wheel sticks? clean the roller pins and slots. 5 minutes. Impeller stops? try pulling and just clean the surfaces of the magnet and cavity; again a 5 minute job. You do have to unplug it for those two jobs. TIPS- A) Do yourself a huge favor and buy an extra set or two of cartridges. They are easily found from mom-n-pop pet stores to large chain stores. You CAN rinse the old ones in an emergency. B) Go to the grocery store and get a gl jug of distilled water and keep it. Reason? tap and even well water has trace elements and minerals that will kill the beneficial bacteria and cause a cloudy white appearance (bacterial bloom) for a cpl days. C) Motor/impeller maintenance - Unplug the pump. Lift the cover off, grab the intake tube (square) and slightly wiggle while pulling upward. Clean with a paper towel and white vinegar on the rubber "grommets" and silver pins you see.Basically, make sure everything that is suppose to spin, does so smoothly. D) Bio wheel sticking - Just lift the cover off. No need to unplug. Lift the sticking wheel outuse a Q-tip to clean the slots where the wheel rests. Lightly clean the silver roller pins on the ends. Replace. DO NOT CLEAN OR WASH the paper wheel itself. Sounds like work?? it's not... A canister or in tank filter is ten times more work and messy. These are awesome filters.. Get it and take heed to what I wrote. You'll be happy with it.... ... show more

I love Marineland filters, great filters at a reasonable price. Mine have lasted as long as 10 to 15 years. They aren’t the highest quality out there but worth every penny. Lots of room in the enclosure for additional filter media, which I like to do. They are not self-priming, you have to fill them with water before turning them on. I don’t mind, it’s not a concern of mine. Construction is fine, strong plastic not a cheap feel. There are two slots for filter cartridges if you need extra room. Off-brand filter pads are available at a reduced price, they’re as good as the genuine Marineland cartridges. I recycle mine though, cutting the fiber out of a spent cartridge and replace it with a pad made from bulk filter material that I cut to fit. All in all a reliable workhorse filter at a reasonable price. Recommended. ... show more

The EMPEROR SERIES are great filters! I've use the 280 & 400 before back in the 90's. They were great then, they're great now. There have have been some minor changes: No more control flow & window to see wheels turning. The rattling noise that everyone complains about is easy to fix. While the filter is running/on, lift the intake tube up and off the filter (ensure that the spray bars stay in place by holding/pushing them down in place while you lift up the intake tube. Allow the filter to empty water out of filter. You will hear bubbling and gurgling noises. Do not worry. Once the filter empties out and spray bars run out of water, carefully reinsert intake tube down into chamber, wait for filter to refill itself with water. Once filled,the filter should be back in normal operation and the noise gone (unless the shaft and or related parts to it are damaged). By doing this, it is like purging nd priming the filter. I think the filter gets foreign particles from time to time which caused the noise. Mine (I have 2 280's & 2 400's on my overstockecked planted freshwater 84 gallon long tank. Only One seems to have been unlucky to get small/micro snails inside of it). I also avoid using soil and sand in my tank which could get in filter impeller assembly when the substrate or sand is disturbed, especially if ur intake tube reaches close to the bottom. I decided to write this review for the sole purpose of informing others who have been frustrated or have read the negative reviews about the emperor power filters that the noise issues are easy to remedy. I never completely clean my emperors out which could increase more disturbance on the mechanical parts (impeller assembly and intake tube). If the impeller gets stuck, follow the same procedure as mentioned above. Use long pliers to realign impeller in assembly while intake tube is out. Once impeller is spinning again, reindeer intake tube. I just took care of a little rattling noise from one of my 400 emperor by performing the above mentioned procedure 30 minutes ago. It took me 2 minutes. I'm lazy when it comes to writing a review about anything on any forum. In fact this is probably my first review ever on anything because I can't remember any other review I've written before for the moment, but I feel like I wrote one before about something else totally not related to this subject (a very short one, probably under 20 words). This review I'm writing now about emperor filters is very important to me. I'm passionate about them. They beat canister and any other job filter. No hoses, no crawling under tank cabinet, no clogged hoses. Very user friendly. To clean spray bars, I don't dismantle it and use brush. I simply use a wire, bend it to a small 90 degree and insert it through each hole on the spray bars until the water flows freely. The most work required maintaining this filter is rinsing off the homemade screen pads (10 minutes tops, I have 4 emperors) which I have made out of green scrubbing pads cut out to the shape of the stock filter pad/tray with the stock blue floss and carbon removed. I used a box cutter blade to shave/cut the blue floss/pads off the black tray. I re use the black tray to work with my home made green scrubbing pads. I hold the two together as I slide them down into filter slots, no rubber band necessary as the green pads are sturdy and hold their shape going down into slots. My all 4 emperor filters are so quiet, the water trickling is louder than the motor. My water level reaches up to the lips of the output chutes....now that is quite. The higher water level moves/circulates water better,quieter as the surface of water travels from filter all the way to front of tank because the water doesn't drop from filter chute, but slides across onto surface of water to front of tank with less splashing. Higher water level of water also gives me more water in my tank. I am not a sales rep or anything if the sort. In just passionate about my hobbies and like to share what works. If a can convince one person to use the emperor power filters as I do...this review was worth writing. Less hassle and maintenance, more bio/chemical/particles filtration, more water movement..like a filter and water circulation pump in one also. I highly recommend the emperor filters. Once u know how to remedy the noise, it takes two minutes. Do not be frustrated. Just learn and figure out what makes noise and how it goes away. If I have to post a video on "how to", I will. I will find time out of my busy schedule. These filters are awesome!!!! ... show more

The Marineland Penguin Bio-Wheel Power Filter has been a solid performer for keeping my aquarium water clean and clear. The multi-stage filtration does a good job removing debris, and the Bio-Wheel feature is great for beneficial bacteria, which really helps with long-term tank health. Setup was straightforward, and once it’s running properly, water clarity improves quickly. The flow rate feels strong enough for medium tanks without being too aggressive for the fish. That said, it’s not the quietest filter out there. After some time, the Bio-Wheel can make a noticeable humming or rattling sound if it’s not perfectly aligned. It’s not a deal breaker, but it does require occasional adjustment to keep noise down. Pros: • Effective mechanical and biological filtration • Bio-Wheel helps maintain healthy bacteria • Easy to install and maintain • Improves water clarity fast Cons: • Can get noisy if the wheel isn’t aligned • Cartridge replacements add ongoing cost Overall, this is a dependable, well-known filter that does its job well.     • Powerful Filter That Works Great When Kept Clean
Size: Up to 60 gallons
This is the filter that I use for my 30 gallon tank. It’s rated for 50-70 gallon but I like to over filter because my freshwater puffers are messy eaters. Marineland is a pretty well known brand in the hobby and I own several other of their products. None of them have ever given me any trouble and that includes this filter. It’s a little bulky but that doesn’t matter as long as it works imo. I bought my tank second hand so before I got this, I was using one that came with it. Didn’t last long though. I ended up having to replace it with this after just a month. Luckily I was smart enough to save some of the media so I could seed the new filter. Pros: (1) Its pretty quiet most of the time. It gets louder if your water level drops below a certain point but you can prevent that easily by replenishing the water. I try to do that every day if I remember. (2) The filter is easy to put together. There’s a diagram that you can follow but it’s literally just common sense. Link the pieces together, put in the cartridge and that’s about it. Took me maybe two or three minutes max. (3) Set up is quick. Once you’ve hung it to your tank, you pour water in the chamber until the mechanism starts to spin. Then you can put the lids on which sit at the top. This step took less than a minute. (4) It does a good job of dealing with the bio load. I wouldn’t say that my tank is overstocked but like I said before my puffers are messy eaters. With this filter, my nitrite and ammonia levels are always at 0. Nitrates depends on whether or not I’ve changed the water recently but usually hovers at around 10ppm. (5) Easy to clean. I take the lid off and give it a good rinse with the tank water. Sometimes I like to use a bottle cleaning brush to remove algae that’s formed in the crevices. I actually got a set of 5 here on Amazon - blue ones from a brand called Turbo Cons: (1) There’s no way to control the flow of the water. Fortunately my puffers can deal with it no problem but I can see how it can be an issue for some fish like bettas. I suppose you can always do the “water bottle trick” though to slow it down. (2) I mentioned this already but this filter is bulky. If you want something nicer-looking, get something else. This will not be a good match for your rimless tank. I have mine in the corner and it still looks pretty intrusive. (3) The wheel splashes sometimes. I have a lid so I don’t have to worry about the water getting out but it would be nice if it was less splashy. It always causes a bunch of bubbles to form on the side. In conclusion, this is a good filter but it does have some drawbacks- the most obvious being the way it looks. Yes it’s not pretty but it gets the job done well. You can’t control the water flow like other filters but it’s also more quiet than others. ... show more

My experience with this filter so far has been on par with most of the other reviews. I hope I can address some things for anyone thinking about buying this. I have a 55 gallon tank and bought the 350. I dont plan on getting any dirty fish, and considering the movement on this model, I am confident it is enough for the bioload I plan on having. I was leery of getting this over a fluval or aqueon after noise/functionality complaints but if it rates above 4 stars on average it's fair game at that point. It was on sale for about $30 when I ordered it and money talks. Im not an extreme hobbyist or fish wrangler, just a girl who would like a pretty fish tank in her house and has done her homework. So if terms aren't correct or I don't make sense, I apologize. Anyways, To keep it simple, pros and cons: Pros: It is easy to put together. It literally is just common sense linking pieces together and putting in cartridges. It took no more than five minutes. After filling up my tank, and getting it started I was concerned it would be hard to prime. It wasn't. I poured in two cups of water in each side and it was up and spinning. Took about 30 seconds. Max. You put on the little lids which just kind of sit on top of everything without stopping the flow. -The motor IS NOT and SHOULD NOT be loud. I wonder if the people complaining about this followed general fish keeping instructions, let alone the product's. There is a rim at the top of most aquariums, usually black or brown metal/wood. This is where your water level should be regardless of filter. If it is any lower, then there is an amount of space the water has to drop, making more and more noise. The water makes the noise, not the filter. With that said, even the water quickly calms down if people could wait more than 12 hours before writing a review. The instructions clearly tell you to wait at least 24 hours to let the filter break in. The only thing I can hear from roughly 3-4 feet away is trickling water, which is considered white noise and something human beings can naturally block out within a matter of minutes. If I focus on it, yeah duh I can hear it, but it is not enough to tickle me bothered. Its sound, but not unpleasant sound. If you have an aversion to white noise (the sound of thunderstorms, babbling brooks, the sound of the beach) then I suppose this isn't the filter for you. But none of the folks in my house have said "AHH CURSE THAT LOUD FILTER I CANT HEAR THE TV!" -It has room for 4 cartridges at a time. In a sense, that would be great for bigger bioloads without having to get additional filters. Its a nice option. Not one I need right now, but I appreciate the thought. -I cant confirm or deny whether or not it is at 350 gph, but it definitely pushes out enough water to lead me to believe it does. I trust it. Cons: The noise may not be for everyone. I could easily fall asleep with a sound like this in my room. But, I can see why someone couldn't. In my living room it is drowned out. But, if you are all very quiet people who dont make a sound all day, then I suppose you would hear it a lot. We yell and laugh and generally live in our living room thus I could easily be downplaying the sound. -Theres no way to control the flow. I don't need to, but it wouldve been nice at least. -The instructions dont really specify what this one part is. Its a knobule on the intake that moves up and down between vented and covered. I have no clue what it does but would be happy to be enlightened. -This is personal opinion, but its not very nice looking. Ive seen other filters and they dont seem so...intrusive. I appreciate it's size and power but the intake just makes me feel like theres this invasive hand reaching in my tank and gobbling up water. In a 55 gallon there is only one place to put it--in the back corner, next to a heater, tubing, and what I consider the "ugly corner" full of tubing and the heater. Mine is poorly covered with silk plants. In conclusion, its a good filter with some setbacks. I will chalk up any users with mechanical issues being lazy and not cleaning/maintaining it regularly. If you don't want to do that then I say spend the money on something more expensive. It isn't delicate, per se, but I would expect anything in which you are paying a smidge less you could take a whopping 15 minutes every month to clean and check to make sure it is functioning properly instead of whining until the motor burns out from lack of care. ... show more
