  • Great Midline Filter Great Midline Filter
Size: 10 - 20 Gallon Aquarium, 100 GPH
UPDATE JAN 2021: The filter died, but to be fair we had a crazy storm here and the power went off and on about 4 or 5 times. I think the motor got burned out from a power surge. This filter is the best I've had so far, and I've done Aqueon, Tetra, Fluval and whatever came with the combo tank packs I've had in the past. I've kept fish since my early teen years (I'm now in my 30s) and I tend to dedicate myself to finding a perfect middle ground of care between Average Joe Pet Owner and Avid Enthusiast. I want ALL my pets to have happy, healthy, generous lives but I can't dedicate my time and money to giving them the absolute best. This filter falls into that comfortable middle space where you want quality but you're not trying to spend your entire paycheck. • I can't agree that it's too loud. Mine is actually incredibly quiet. • The suction isn't as fantastic as my ideal would be, but it's on par for the product and it's in the range it needs to be for my 5.5 gallon tank. If it were more powerful my Betta wouldn't have a very pleasant time getting close to it. It still cleans up the 5.5 in no time flat, so I'm satisfied. • If you keep your water parameters right and your quality tidy (no overstocking or overfeeding), the filter can last longer than the typical change out time. • If you really want to make it perfect for fish like Betta, add a cut sponge filter to the output. It cuts down on noise, throttles back the water disruption quite a bit, and adds extra filtration. If you're not seeing water flow slow down, then you're likely not fitting the sponges correctly. (See photos) Just make sure, once a month or so, that you rinse the sponge in tap water (to kill algae) and let it direct sun dry for at least 12 hours before putting it back (evaporates the chemicals in tap water so you don't kill your bene-bacteria). When I take the sponges out to clean the water at a rapid rate (say, like during a debris vacuum session), I have a little cave in the tank that faces into a corner, so my betta can get away from the current and chill. Its entirely possible to make this work for a betta tank if you've got lots of experience, some ingenuity, and awareness. If you're new to tanks and filters, the recommendation is a filter that turns over the water 4x/hour. So a 5 gallon tank would need a filter that does 20-/+ gph (gallons per hour). This filter does A LOT more than that. I choose to have this kind of filter because I don't subject my fish to regular water changes, I keep the parameters and trace minerals stable with Seachem products and only add water as necessary. All in all I definitely recommend this filter. ... show more

  • How to rebuild impellers and never not buy one again! How to rebuild impellers and never not buy one again!
Size: 10 - 20 Gallon Aquarium, 100 GPH
If you are hearing a lot of rattling or rumbling noise from the filter, or it is just loud and the loud is not a water sound, its probably a worn out rod. What happens is the impeller spins millions of revolutions over time and wears out the stainless steel rod. You would notice that there is some play in between the hole of the impeller and the shaft. There should be no play. If you have a magnifying glass of a jewelers loop you would be able to see the rod getting thinner the closer it is to the impeller. You can replace that rod for a lot less than buying a new one. Here's what you need to do. 1. Get some needle nose plyers and pinch the rod just below the end cap, if the end cap is at 12:00, have the end of the plyers at 4:00, and then pivot the plyers up to 2:00 and this should push the cap off. 2. Remove the shaft, at this point there would be the other end cap on the other end of the shaft. 3. At this point you can do 1 of 2 things, get some Vaseline like others have said and cover the shaft in it and put it back together (this will get you by for maybe a few days) OR 3b. Go out and buy 2.5MM stainless steel rods on amazon, they come in 10 packs 300 mm long so you could make 30 of them if you needed to. ($9.99) 4. Use your old shaft to determine the right length and cut exactly to that length using cutters and a grinder or dermal tool to smooth it off. Just make sure the length is right. 5. Use Vaseline on the rod and put it back together with the end caps on the ends. You will have plenty of material left over for additional shafts. Takes about 20 minutes but I promise you will never have to spend $30 on a Marineland PRIM350B 350b Impeller again ... show more

  • What is with the ridiculous Wheel! What is with the ridiculous Wheel!
Size: 10 - 20 Gallon Aquarium, 100 GPH
Okay This thing irks me! But overall..I have to admit it seems to really work! When I Put it in a very dirty tank, it immediately, visibly, suctioned in alot of gunk!! (Seen in my pic)..Also I might mention, mine is running on a 10 gallon tank, & i THINK This one is rated for a 10 to 20 gallon...? Not for sure now, in any case, Im sure it would be fine on a 20 gallon as well..Looking at the filters..it 💪🏼WORKS! MY Issue is tht darn wheel! Mine NEVER turned, No matter how we tried, for WEEKS ON END..Thn it suddenly started turning exactly like its supposed to, smoothly & continously..outta the blue, immediately after a filter change last week!! Now(as seen in my video) it is still turning, BUT, is sometimes kinda jerky, instead of smooth! I had planned to replace it, until i saw how it seems to really get the job done! Its quiet, as long as the water level is up, very annoying if ur water level is too low..but thats easy enough to fix. WOULD DEFINITELY Recommend. ... show more

  • Cheap and cheerful
Size: 10 - 20 Gallon Aquarium, 100 GPH
I got this because I needed a filter for my 20G wide freshwater tank fast and on a budget. I’ll admit it was a risk, but all for the best. Very easy set up, and cleaned the tank up completely in just a few hours, so very happy fish. The filters are easy to swap out, I’ve found they last about a month. They are also decently affordable so that has been a plus. In terms of noise, I don’t hear the pump motor at all unless my head’s right next to it, or I’ve just switched it back on after turning it off (it makes a whirring and gurgling sound until it gets the water flow going, so if it doesn’t seem to be working right after plugging it in, give it a minute or two). There is some sound from the water flowing back into the tank, but I find that quite pleasant. The current generated will depend on your water level, but I find it’s relatively gentle. The compact design keeps it from being an eyesore. The included intake guard is sufficient however I did decide to use a filter sponge on it just for a little something extra - this is not a necessity, however. Overall an excellent filter for the price, would recommend to anyone with a small to medium tank and a tighter budget. ... show more

  • Bio wheel filter
Size: 10 - 20 Gallon Aquarium, 100 GPH
Awesome filter! I bought this to replace the cheap filter that came with my daughter’s 10 gallon kit from petsmart. One that came with it wasn’t keeping up. Changed it out with this and 3 days later my water is clear! Also added a bag of substrate in the large hole in filter housing. Awesome filter for the price. ... show more

  • A tad noiser than I like, but lasts longer. UPDATE A tad noiser than I like, but lasts longer. UPDATE
Size: 10 - 20 Gallon Aquarium, 100 GPH
These are very easy to install, all you need to do is remove all the packaging and rinse the filter. You insert the filter, bio wheel and the plastic piece that goes down into the water. Mine was a bit too long and I was happy to know that it was really was to cut the plastic piece and make it shorter. Make sure to add water before you plug it in and turn it on. I had previously bought some Tetra filters for my 5 & 10 gallon tanks but I noticed that not long after I got them the water flow would reduce so much that it was practically not working and I had to replace them more frequently. I was sick of replacing them so I figured I would try these and I am so happy! They seem to have much better suction power and the water rotation hasn't slowed since I got them. I was a little sad because they are a bit louder than the others ( I think because of the bio wheel) however it wasn't even enough noise to bother me much in my room.I bought 2 filters in total, I had an issue with one however. I went to unplug it when I was changing the water in the tank and upon plugging it back in it wouldn't work. I was able to call the customer service number on the tag that was on the cord. They asked me to send a screenshot of my purchase on here and then they have sent me out a replacement filter at no cost! UPDATE: The 2nd one I originally bought puttered out as well. I was going to call the company and have that replaced as well but did not want to go through the hassle. I am hoping it was because those two were from the same lot. Also noticed the bio wheel never spins so not like it actually does any extra filtering. Buying one more and if that breaks as well going to switch to another brand. Disappointed as I have had a few of their larger filters for years with no issues. UDATE: I have now purchased 3 of these and each on goes out after a few months if I have any issues with the power. If the power goes off something must trigger the pump to no longer work. Tired of contacting the company/ordering new ones. Buying a different brand now. ... show more

  • Good filter, some unexpected issues
Size: 10 - 20 Gallon Aquarium, 100 GPH
I bought the 100 model; I've only had this in use for about 3 days, so I can't comment on durability. As far as I can tell it works well, and the noise level, which I was a little concerned about after reading some of the reviews, is very low - it generates just a slight trickling sound which I find pleasant rather than annoying. However, I'm rating it only three stars because of two separate issues. The first is the fact that the filter simply would not function without water all the way to the top of the tank - unless the water level reached the overflow lip of the filter itself, all that happened when turning it on was a whirring sound, but no actual suction or water movement. This isn't a huge deal, but it's definitely not optimal, and was certainly unexpected - I thought at first I had a defective unit. There is almost nothing about this in the documentation. The other drawback is that there is no way to modify the flow volume - the description states that this can be done by adjusting the mid-level strainer, but this has no noticeable effect at all on the flow, and I now notice that the seller states in one of the answers here that there is no adjustment capability. This was something that I wanted, and was almost but not quite enough for me to return the unit. On a minor note, I'll also mention that the top/lid arrangement is rather flimsy and insecure - there are two pieces, neither of which seem to snap in or fit into anything, but just sit on top held by gravity. Brushing against it is sometimes enough to dislodge one or both. Oh, and as long as I'm being thorough... There's no way to adjust the length of the intake tube - it's made of several separate pieces, but none of them can be omitted (except I suppose the bottom-most, if you want to jerry-rig your own strainer). I have a 20Gallon Tall tank, and the bottom of the tube is sitting on the substrate - and if anything I have less than the optimal depth of substrate. This part I could probably have realized ahead of time had I thought of checking. So overall what seems to be a decent filter, let down by some poor design and description/documentation issues. UPDATE: I'm editing this to retract the last comment in the original review, since the manufacturer has already responded and pointed out what looks to be an easy way to customize the length of the intake tube. I'll also add that I'm impressed by the customer service this demonstrates, and it definitely is a very big plus. ... show more

  • This is a very solid filter
Size: 10 - 20 Gallon Aquarium, 100 GPH
Originally I bought this for a Betta tank, but it was a disaster. Blew around the poor fish like he was in that movie Twister. But, I'm a crazy fish person who has a bunch of tanks so it was bound to go to use some where. I now use this in my 10 gallon Quarantine tank. I stuff it with my own filter floss and ceramic rings. The container is generous in size so I fit two layers of floss and a good amount of bio rings. I don't use the biowheel. It spins too flow but maybe that's because I have too much of my own media in there. Regardless, I just don't think it is necessary or all that effective, but I don't know much. I use this in a bare bottom tank, so I can attest to it working effectively to keep the water column clean and free of debris and gunk. The tank is pristine and crystal clear. It does NOT have adjustable flow, which kind of sucks. So I can't tell you to use it for anything under 10 gallons. It does have a slot on the upper part of the intake tube that you can close off, so that comes in handy. If you've got a 10 gallon tank, this filter would be great providing that the fish do not need still water like a Betta. It's going to turn the water over 10 times an hour and having seen it with my own eyes, it does an excellent job of keeping a clean tank! ... show more
