  • Good Flow. Low Wattage = Low Heat
This is the best hang-on filter I've tried in my many years as an aquarium hobbyist. Super slim, low noise, low power, but still has a good amount of water going through the unit. The output comes down a slide with a lip at the bottom, that disperses the current more across the top of the water than in a downward fashion. Seriously, magnificent design. Very well thought out. Uses just 2 Watts of power at full throughput. Which is great for A) low power bills, and B) not adding excess heat to a small tank, especially during hot summer months. Read the reviews, and I think I can address any possible negatives I might run into. People have said it can hum once it's been on for a while. That is pretty normal for any type of powerhead motor over an extended time, and there are a couple ways to address this. Take it apart, and clean the impeller/impeller housing. This is a common cause of vibration. Also, put a rubber suction cup on the glass behind the motor to absorb vibration. My Marina S10 is currently quiet though, but I'll update if that changes and I have to use my 2 year manufacturers warranty. Worst case scenario (after rma), you could actually replace the motor with a different powerhead. Why, if you think about it, you could run a small powerhead on a normal undergravel/uplift tube, and disperse its output through the S10 using a piece of tubing. Or just park the S10 on top of an uplift tube. The filters are small, but like with all hang-on filters, you can use many different types of filter media instead. You could put a small bag of carbon back there. Or chemi beads. Or ceramic canister blocks. It's also easy to cut a sponge a little wider than the filter width in order to get it to stay between the filter supports. Use your imagination. The disposable filters that are sold for this unit are cheap too, and they work very well. So no problem if you don't want to bother with customization. This is hands down my #1 recommended hang-on aquarium filter. ... show more

  • LOVE it!
I purchased this little filter for my betta's soil-based naturally planted 5 gallon tank. The tank is in my bedroom so I was looking for a filter that was quiet, small, slim and had an adjustable output and intake so I wouldn't have to baffle it for his fins, and affordable, as I am a student. I scoured the internet looking for something to put in the tank that met those requirements for less than $20. I stumbled upon this little beauty and thought "what the heck? There aren't any real reviews, but if it sucks, I can send it back and MAKE a real review." I was NOT disappointed. Setup was very easy and the instructions were very clear. My only complaint is that the little "circle thing" that you attached to the base on the outside to keep the filter level often falls out of mine, or did, until a little hot glue solved that problem. The outer, hang over back potrion of the filter measures 18cm long by 5cm deep by 15cm tall; which fits perfectly between my tank and the wall. The intake tube is also adjustable in height, so it can fit in varying depths of tanks. The filter's powerhead is underwater and so is silent. I was a little skeptical of this,so I did a thorough inspection for any defects that could kill my precious betta or his red cherry shrimp. One month in, and no body's been electrocuted yet. The filter came with a prefilter sponge so I didn't have to add one to protect my betta's fins or my RCS's livelihoods. The output low is also adjustable from super low to very high (in a small tank like mine, it might even be enough for a goldfish or two). Because the output is adjustable, I set it to low (pushed the knob/level aaaaall the way to the right) and my betta has no trouble with the flow (he built a bubble nest under the output thing), even when the water level gets a little low. The filter itself is super quiet; my laptop is louder than it and the only time I hear it is late at night when the whole house is turned off. Occasionally if I've been mucking about in the tank (trimming plants, changing water) and the hood isn't on straight or the filter gets bumped and is touching my bedroom wall, I can hear an irritating buzzing sound generated by the vibrations causing the plastic case of the filter to bump and buzz against the wall. This is easily fixed by either jiggling the hood until it is properly settled back onto the tank or moving the filter slightly so that it doesn't touch the wall anymore. As mentioned above, it has a fairly small or narrow external footprint, the internal footprint is also quite reasonable, unlike most internal power filters (like the Tetra Whisper 3i and 5-10i that I tried before this). For refill cartridges, I don't know if Marina sells any, but the small Tetra BioBags fit perfectly, and there are 3 spots available for cartridges, or you can just put in one or two (I have one and some sponge for a biofilter). All in all, a great filter and a great investment. Keeps my water crystal clear, doesn't but my aquarium's inhabitants and doesn't bug me. I LOVE it and would recommend it over and over again! Best $15 I spent on my aquarium (besides the fish & shrimp!) ... show more
