  • Really good portable vacuum
Style: Kit
This vacuum works great. Really good suction, lightweight, and charges fast. Easy to open and close canister to dispose of trash as well.

  • Great vacuum for spot cleaning, and great servicabilty.
Style: Kit
The ultimate test of the battery based vacuum cleaner is the 1) suction power, 2) battery life, 3) charge time and 4) serviceability. 1) The suction power maybe just bit less than the Dyson V6. But, in use the vacuum cleaner has more than enough vacuum for household use. 2) The one charge lasts about 20-30 minutes of off and on run time. The quoted duration is 15 minutes at 100 duty cycle. But, I never had the vacuum on continuously, and I don't think most people would use it that way. I use if mostly to pickup bits of dirt and lints from both wood floor as well as carpeted floor. I have full powered central vacuum which I use when I am in need of cleaning the whole house. So, this is used to do mostly spot cleaning, in between the major battle with the dirt kinds. 3) The included 2.0Ah battery is typically charged to full within about 20 minutes. That is much much quicker than most battery based vacuum cleaners out there. This is definite plus for the Makita. 4) Serviceability. The battery can be purchased separately. I purchased two 4.0Ah battery for Makita. The included charger can charge 4Ah battery. And the battery can be used in any of the Makita's 18V power tools. So, if you have Makita power tool(s), then you can use these batteries on this vacuum. In some other vacuum cleaners, once the battery life wanes, you have no choice but to purchase another (such as Dyson). This external battery is the way to go. So far, I love this vacuum, it is every-ready minutemen ready to bring spotless cleaning at the finger tip. The vacuum is light and useful tool. Compare to other vacuums that I had from Crafsman, Black & Decker, and others, this is definite keeper, the best of the breed. ... show more

  • Great for crumbs, cat litter, and pet hair.
Style: Kit
This is a great little vacuum. I work at a veterinary hospital and we purchased one for hair and toe nail clippings that accumulate all day long. It’s quick and does a great job. I would not recommend it for industrial type use ie: drywall dust, anything damp, etc. the filter will have to be discarded if you use it for that purpose. It also can’t be abused. Get the wall hanger for it because if you stand it up propped against a wall and it crashes to the floor it’s not going to last long. We got the cyclonic attachment because with lots of different folks using it hastily, the filter basket and filter paper cup kept getting pitched accidentally. Now it’s way easier to use and emptying it does not require it to be taken apart. The cup on the cyclonic device just pops off and no filter loss! BTW, the cyclonic device makes the wand about 4 inches longer so better for taller folks. It works well on pet hair and cat litter as there is no roller bar for hair to get tangled around and fling litter all over. I liked it so well I bought one for my house. My only caution is that you should clean it and care for it regularly and the tubes will not take abuse or pressure. It seems pricey for what it is, and I would love to get one at a better price but there just aren’t many cordless vacs with no roller bar feature. I would agree with others that it doesn’t do well on carpet other than very short pile. ... show more

  • I love this vacuum, but it does have some issues and needs the extra filter
Style: Kit
First off, you should NOT buy this vacuum if: You don’t own any other Makita power tools. You expect this to be your main vacuum. You need this to clean thick carpet. Also I HIGHLY recommend getting the “199553-5 Cyclonic Vacuum Attachment” with it, so much so that IMO it should come with it and be part of the kit. I paid ~$120 (on sale) for the quick charger, 2 AH battery, and vacuum and at most would pay $150 for that kit. At ~$120, I do think it’s a great deal as the battery and quick charger alone are easily worth ~$90, so getting the vacuum for ~$30 is great. However, this is also why I say you need to have other Makita power tools, because if you have no use for the charger or battery outside of this vacuum it’s a terrible deal. I use this vacuum to clean my car and garage, and for these tasks it’s fantastic. It’s super light and with the added filter is the perfect length for me to clean the floor (I’m 6’3”) and I use it all the time to clean up random stuff like metal chippings from drilling to dirt tracked in from outside. It can clean short carpet (stuff like entry mats) very well. However, it does not clean thick carpet well as the suction isn’t super strong (at least compared to my Shark vacuum). As I mentioned earlier, I think you essentially HAVE to buy the extra filter as it allows you to use the vacuum without needing to change the main filter and it also seems to improve the suction of the vacuum as well. The added filter essentially acts as the “bag” of the vacuum and makes it much easier to dump out the collected dirt and “protects” the main filter significantly. So much so that I still haven’t had to replace it despite using it frequently and owning it for almost a year. Again I do NOT suggest this as your main/only vacuum as it’s just not up to that task, but as a second/portable vacuum this is a GREAT vacuum. ... show more

  • Don’t use this for sanding dust, sheetrock dust Don’t use this for sanding dust, sheetrock dust
Style: Kit
Below is my review written a month or two after I bought this two years ago. I still give it four stars even though in the last month it has failed to pick anything up. When I took it apart I realized what happened. My painters had helped themselves to this vacuum and used it to pick up sanding and sheetrock dust and other debris. What you see in the photo if you enlarge it is a ton of sawdust and a bunch of pet hair. I used a real shop vac to get rid of all of the dust and hair and put it together so that it works again but I’m waiting for the cyclonic attachment for this to come on Monday to see if that helps with the filtration problem. I see in the manual that there’s a high-performance filter available for this but it did not come with mine so I’ve been using the “normal pre-filter“ and it obviously doesn’t keep out pet hair. So my advice is to either get the high-performance filter to use over the pre-filter or buy the cyclonic attachment (and you can see the reviews for it on Amazon. I will update with a description of that once I see how it works). Otherwise, this has been a real jam for me and I haven’t had any problem with cracking or battery charging or anything else. I just think Makita could’ve done a better job with filtration. you shouldn’t have to buy a separate attachment for $35 to keep dust out of the inside of a vacuum! Early 2019: I just got this, so can't review longevity. So far here are my pros and cons: PRO: Suction is fantastic! No kickback of granular things like cat litter AT ALL! TIP: Leave the head on the pile you've sucked up for a fraction of a second to give it time to get all of it into the hose. Otherwise some will be left on the floor. PRO: Battery life is great! I charged it maybe 30 mins out of the box and it cleaned my entire kitchen, family room and spots in bedroom bathroom. Still more charge left. CON: The icons on the charger are inscrutable! I still can't figure it all out but when the middle light on the bottom turns green you are good to go. PRO: the head fits in every small areas. It swivels and can run very flat. CON: The head is very small so you have a lot of moving it around compared to something like the Shark Navigator. It is more like a dust buster with a handle. PRO: Because it is more like a dust buster, you don't really vacuum the same way: you just move the vacuum over the whatever and it picks up. No continuous back and forth. PRO: Works great as a hand vac in the car and on the stairs! Does a better job than the carwash does at cleaning out salt and crumbs in the grooves on the seats! PRO: I love the on-board edge cleaner! CON: There is no way to lock the switch ON so you have to constantly hold it down. This is a ridiculous omission considering the Makita drills which do have this feature. My trigger finger would get very tired so it was on/off on/off. Such a simple thing to fix! CON: The handle where you have to grab and trigger the switch is too short by about an inch. I am 5'4 and have very long arms (used to be 5'6) so I can't imagine someone taller being able to use this without bending over. CON: I don't see how you can wall mount the charger and there are no instructions for it. You have to remove the battery from the vac and put it in the charger (tough on my arthritic hands) and leave it setting somewhere until the sound goes off. Shark Navigator has a stand that you set the vac on, it charges and you just leave it there until you need it. I find this lack of abilities in the Makita really problematic. CON: The vac doesn't stand up by itself (but neither does the Shark Navigator). SUMMARY: despite the negatives, the positives are worth it: much better suction. Cleaning the dirt cup is easy...you just rotate it a quarter turn to remove it but you do have to use your fingers to peel off pet hair, if any, and occasionally rinse it out (like the Navigator). ... show more

  • Love this for vacuuming up bugs as a "stick" vacuum.
Style: Kit
Love this for bugs! Probably not what the company wants to hear. It is great as a "stick" vacuum which is why I bought it. Perfect for reaching up to vacuum up a bug high up. Have an older one but this is a little more powerful as it is 8 years newer.

  • Makita Vacuum works amazing on pet hair!
Style: Kit
I love this vacuum! It works well on hard floors and on rugs (make sure you are stepping on the rug or it'll try to suck it up lol). I was afraid I was going to have to buy a whole bunch of filters but I have found the original filter has lasted quite a long time with proper care and cleaning. It is lightweight, it can take a beating, and it takes no time at all for the battery to charge. This vacuum is a godsend for cat hair. It is easy to store because it is so slender and you can throw it on a hook in a closet very easily. I don't find it to be any noisier than any other traditional vacuum and the battery lasts a very long time before needing to be charged. ... show more

  • Perfect solution for hard floors and stairs
Style: Kit
We have kids and dogs, so debris and pet hair on the floors and stairs is always an issue. Sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming with a traditional machine and attachments is unnecessary laborious and often ineffective, so I wanted something like a dustbuster, but more helpful. I spent a LOT of time researching various battery-powered vacuums. So many products got poor reviews due to internal batteries that fail and cannot be removed or replaced, requiring replacement of the entire product. What sets this product apart is that the battery is rechargeable on an external charging device (which is included with the product), so the battery is replaceable should it ever fail. And so far the battery has been amazing. We've had vacuum for 3 months, use it about 3-4 times a week, and have only had to charge the battery twice. Makita is a power tool company. Its products are rugged and reliable, yet it's lightweight enough for the kids to use. Helping keep the floors clean has actually become fun for them. The different heads are easy to interchange (brush vs. crevice tool, etc.), and the collection area is easy to empty. The machine has just enough suction to get the job done. It's not loud or whiny, but about what I would have expected. It mounts easily to a wall with the mounting mechanism included with the product. I couldn't be happier with this purchase. It was exactly what I was hoping was out there. ... show more
