  • Better ladder
This was delivered with two left handrails so we had to wait for a right handrail to be delivered. That was an aggravating disappointment. This staircase was easy to assemble and a lot better than the ladder that came with the pool. It would be better if something was attached to the bottom to out sandbags in. We ended up putting the sand bags in a big plastic container and sitting the container on top of the rail on the bottom. This has to be adjusted often as it is not attached and moves when the ladder moves. The stairs are slippery and second step is a little high for my liking but, all and all, it’s a good purchase. ... show more

  • Quality and Return Process
I was very excited to receive this product. I had to watch YouTube videos to put it together, because the instructions sent are horrible. After finally getting it together I realized it is HORRIBLE design. The four steps have to be weighed down. They provide large ziplock bags to put sand in. After doing that and trying to use the steps the bags fall off of the ledge and knock the bottom two steps off. The steps are wobbly (the bottom of the pool is not unlevel). The outside ladder do not attach to the four steps inside. They are supposed to sit on top of the wobbly steps. They obviously do not. I decided to return the product. I do not have the original boxes at this point. Good luck finding a boxes large enough to return the item. I was provided one UPS label. I had the items packed in three large mini refrigerator boxes. The one label was insufficient. So I contacted the seller. The seller then provided one additional shipping label for FedEx. That was obviously a problem. So I contacted the seller again. They then provide an additional FedEx label. So I now have the items shoved in two boxes. Due to the size of these items the boxes are misshapen, and FedEx will not accept the boxes because they are not stackable. I contact the seller to get UPS labels and I am informed that they cannot provide UPS labels. Their advice is to go to a grocery store or retail store and get boxes. I do not know where they think I am supposed to get boxes large enough to ship this back, if two mini refrigerator boxes won't fit it. I should have kept the boxes it came in yes but because I did not I am now stuck with a very expensive ladder that is crap. All of this to say DO NOT buy this item and if you do be sure to keep the original boxes to ship the horrible ladder back. ... show more

  • Not real impressed
First of all, it was very difficult to put together. Things do not line up so I hope you are strong enough to hold the pieces with all of your might while you use the rubber Mallot. Second of all, steps 2 and 3 are flimsy. It feels like you are going to break them when you step on them. There needs to be a brace of some sort under those steps. There should also be places to put a screw in for each piece you have to put together with the rubber Mallot. I used a drill bit to make my own holes for additional screws. Honestly, this is way overpriced. I doubt it will last throughout the rest of the summer. I wanted something easier for the older people who swim in my pool to get in and out but I worry about their safety as much as the ladder that came with the pool as this ladder. This ladder should not cost more than $175.00 in my opinion. I’m not real happy with this purchase. I would send it back, but it’s already together. ... show more

  • Not what I hoped, forthe price.
Not happy with these, to be honest. Especially as much as we paid. We gave them a fair try and used them for a few months. They were easy to put together. We originally did not receive the 2nd carton so we had to wait for it to be shipped to be able to put these together and use. The 2nd piece somehow never made it out of their warehouse. Now, I *will* give the company an excellent customer service rating. They were responsive, apologetic and quick to fix their error. That i do appreciate and I dealt with only good people. I will definitely give them that. That being said, these seriously under-perform for the price. Steps going in are not spaced well. They are too far apart. I am above average height at 5'7" and have to really stretch to reach the next step. It's not sturdy at all--it's wobbly, and there's nothing to do about it if you don't have a deck. If you have a deck they're attached to, you may not have this problem. But freestanding, even with 100lbs of sand blocks on them inside the pool, they are wobbly. There is only enough room to use two of the square plastic sand weights, and it's not enough. I personally felt safer on the regular ladder that comes with the pool, but we got these because I need double knee replacement. They are not as strong as they claim to be, either. At 75 lbs under the listed weight limit you wouldn't expect the plastic to bow downward as you step on each part. It's actually quite scary between the wobble and the plastic seeming weak. Will it break? I don't know, but it sure seems weak and I would not want to be 75 lbs heavier and step on it. Being in the sunlight i don't expect the plastic to improve-we all know it only gets worse. We would not buy again, even at half price. And I REALLY wanted these to work. I NEEDED them to work. Keep these things in mind if debating hard on whether or not to buy. Even if you only weigh 100 lbs and have a deck to attach them to, you're still going to have problems reaching the next step. I'm still sad they're not great because I don't think there's something better. ... show more

  • Excellent Value and Much Sturdier than Expected Excellent Value and Much Sturdier than Expected
First let me say... I DO NOT work for Main Access nor do I have any affiliation with them. Now that's out of the way, on with my review. We really like these steps. They are much sturdier than our previous ladder system and make getting in/out of the pool much easier. Now just to be fair... we aren't using the outside ladder. We have a deck and I had to cut down the support tubes in order to "sit" on the decking surface (see pictures). Here's a few tips I wanted to share from my assembly and installation experience: 1) Go to the Main Access web site and watch the videos for assembly. This will give you a good idea of what you're up against. Many people say the instructions are poor... just go to their website and save yourself the trouble. It took me about 1 1/2 hours to assemble (and I took my time). You will need a rubber mallet, no hammers. 2) I didn't use the straps to secure the top platform to the top rail of the pool. The top platform has 2 - 3/8" holes in roughly the same location as my previous ladder system so I just reused my 3/8" bolts. If you don't have any you can get them at your local hardware store. You need (qty:2) ~2.5" long 3/8" bolts along with 2 matching nuts and 4 matching washers. The length you require may vary... 2.5" works for me. 3) You will probably need a saw to cut the support tubes and possibly the support feet. It's just plastic so a jig saw or even a true hand saw would work. I used my power miter saw which made it real easy. 4) You absolutely need to put weight under the stairs. I can unequivocally say that it won't work without it. I used 100lbs. Yes you read that right. I purchased (2) Main Access "The Anchor" systems Anchor Universal Pool Step Weight, which are just big plastic jugs that hold about 50 lbs (1 bag) of sand or gravel. I used Pea Gravel... much cleaner to work with than sand. The stairs do come with three large Zip-Loc type bags. These are for putting a complete bag of sand (or gravel) in to use as weights instead, but I think the "Anchor" containers make more sense when trying to install them. 5) My install went like this... ( I pre-assembled the stairs ahead of time) a) Mount top plate b) Cut support tubes and install on the outside (again I was installing on a deck so my tubes were cut real short). You may need to loosen the top plate to get the tubes in. c) Fill your "Anchor" containers with pea gravel d) Get in pool and have someone on the outside hand you the pea gravel containers e) Open the caps on the pea gravel contains to let the air out, re-secure the caps f) Have the person on the outside hand you the stairs g) While the person on the outside holds the stairs (they will try to float), place the (2) pea gravel containers on the "ballast tray" under the stairs. BTW... this is not easy to do. The benefit to the "Anchor" system Main Access sells is that the containers have handles on them... makes them much easier to install, but still not easy. I can't imagine trying to put floppy bags of sand/gravel under there. h) Once the pea gravel is in place (100 lbs.), the stairs will stand upright (almost like magic). It's perfectly balanced now. i) Carefully position the stairs under the "support feet". These feet are adjustable, however they may need to be cut down. There are 7 different positions but only about 3 are accessible until you cut them down. j) I adjusted my support feet so that they were applying pressure on the stairs against the bottom of the pool and at the same time were pushing the support tubes (on the outside) against my deck. When you go to do it, you'll know what I mean. You could call it a "tight fit" as I didn't want any slop in the stairs moving back and forth. If you get a little motion, just use a different hole on the support feet to tighten it up. It really wasn't as hard as it may sound. Once you have the support feet the way you want it, finish you install per the instructions. I've included some photos of our installation to give you a better idea of what it looks like installed. And I can't stress this enough, go the Main Access Website and watch the videos of the assembly. I found it really helpful. Also... they sell spare parts there should you need them. I bought a socket cap to fill the unused hole in the top stair (not sure why it wasn't included, but no biggie). Hopefully my review will help people decide if these are right for them. If anyone has any questions, feel free to contact me. ... show more

  • Poor quality Poor quality
For the price, I expected better quality of the material. Steps are easy to come apart when you are entering or leaving the pool and the handles are flimsy. Not recommended for the aged or those with movement difficulties. Also the instructions are not the best, especially if you are not that handy with assembling products. I would not purchase this again. We kept it because we needed a better ladder for the pool and did not want to go through the hassle of taking it apart, packing and returning it. ... show more

  • Definitely better than just the ones that are ladders going in and out of the pool
The ladder that came with my pool was very wobbly and I did not trust it cuz I had back surgery so I got these instead ladder going into the pool and then steps makes it a lot nicer and also gives you a seat for those grandkids that are still a little unsure about the water

  • Not Really Worth The Price!
Purchased this ladder as others to replace the metal ladder that came with the pool. The old ladders width made it difficult to get in and out of the pool without the fear of falling. The smart step ladder arrived and installation took a few hours and many modifications to make it stable. This ladder comes in two piceces, the part in the pool and the ladder portion on the outside. The problem is that the only thing that connects the two piceces is eight small screws. We had to purchase nylon straps to secure the two pieces to the wall of the pool. Still not as stable as the original ladder but looks better. The directions are completely useless and the hardware is not clearly marked as what is what and where is it to go. Overall I would never buy this ladder again, very cheaply made however it looks better then what I had. Just have to remember to adjust the straps to make sure it stays tight to the wall. ... show more
