I have heard about Madison Reed hair dye several times over the years. I decided to give it a go and got the shade Trieste (5NRM) and super excited. When the kit came, I was impressed with everything that you received in the package. For $30 I received the color, the dye, 2 pairs of gloves, a cap, a packet of barrier cream, a color remover towelette, and shampoo and conditioner samples. This is a great value for $30. When I went to shake up the hair dye I noticed my color tube said the shade was Catania (5NGM). I was disappointed, and when I looked it up it wasn’t as red as I would have liked it. I ended up choosing to use it because my hair was in desperate need of a touch up. I loved it! The tube was so easy to get into the shaking bottle, and best of all there was absolutely no smell! I shook the product up, and divided my hair. The product combined easily, and it applied just like a professional brand. It’s a shaking bottle so of course it’s a bit messy, but the cleansing towelette really came in handy. I was also shocked as there was no harsh smell! Once I rinsed my hair, I noticed how easy it was, my hair did not feel like straw like it would with other box dyes. My biggest worry was that it would flare up my scalp psoriasis, and as for me it hasn’t. I ended up really loving the color, and how smooth my hair felt after. The only reason I gave it four stars as opposed to 5, is that the color tube was not what I ordered. However, I will definitely purchase Madison Reed again in the future!

I used Light Golden Red, &7NCG, Genova Red. On the package, the color looked like an exact match for my original hair color. (I have just enough grey, here & there throughout my hair, to want to cover it... for now, anyway. Vanity... right? lol ) I fell in love with Madison Reed's packaging and the thoughtfulness shown in this very complete hair color kit. The messaging in it dazzled me, as well. Using the product, I didn't care for the smell of it, but it wasn't nearly as bad as some ammonia-based hair color products. So far, so good. In addition, I was impressed by how much hair color was included. Even with long, thick hair, I was able to cover everything from the roots to the very longest tips of my hair, and do so completely. The included shampoo and conditioner were both lavish and generous. Again, as someone with very thick hair, this was appreciated. But then, fresh from the shower, I looked in the mirror. Umm... It looked like the color coverage wasn't consistent. Not even close. Worse, when my hair was dry, the color at the top of my head was spectacular, but starting at about ear level, the color was much darker. Indoors, it looks almost black. On someone as fair-skinned as me, the effect was jarring. Suddenly, every freckle and laugh line seemed more obvious. This was NOT flattering. Oddly, the ends of my hair barely took any color at all. That was fine, because naturally colored hair is usually lighter (sun bleached) at the ends. In the accompanying photo, my head is tilted, so I'm looking up. You're seeing the top of my head as well as my back. Also, that picture was taken on a slightly overcast day, so the variations in color aren't due to extreme lighting. It looks far worse indoors, but I think the photo conveys the essense of the problem. Note: It's been a few years since I was a hair model, but I picked up a lot of hair coloring tips from the pros. So, I'm still mindful of the importance of coloring my hair thoroughly and consistently, and following package directions - to the letter - for the best results. In other words, it's not as if I smothered the top of my head with hair dye, and just loosely spread the rest of my hair with far lighter coverage. Likewise, I didn't douse the middle (now darkest) band of my hair with extra color, or omit coloring the ends, either. To me, it looks like this hair color should not be used on long, previously colored hair. I'd ask for a refund if I had anything to return to the seller, but - of course - I used the complete package. So, at best, that was a waste of $30. I'm going to wait a week so my hair has time to recover, and then I'll be using an "oops!" products to remove the Madison Reed hair color. Fingers crossed, it'll restore how my hair looked before using Madison Reed's hair color. (If that doesn't work, Plan B is to streak my hair with blonde. At worst, it'll look "artsy.") I'll agree that the Madison Reed hair color at the top of my head looks exactly as I'd hoped. It's very close to the color shown on the product's packaging. The probem is: The rest of my hair looks awful. If your hair is short - and, preferably, has never been colored before - you may love Madison Reed. For me, this was an extremely distressing experience. Fortunately, I work at home. This week, only my family will see my hair. If I go out, I'll wear a hat. Then, my hair will look oddly dark with almost blonde sun-bleaching at the ends. Short-term, I'm okay with that. I was tempted to give this product two stars because the packaging was a delight to read, and the included gloves, cap, shampoo, and conditioner were wonderful extras. However, I'm so disappointed by the product itself, I have to give this one star, and share my experience with others, so they don't make a similar mistake.

It's fine. It's not like I hated it or anything. But I feel like you can get the same and, honestly, a better result from L'Oreal or another grocery store brand. I bought this because I really loved how the color came out on one of the reviewers. I naively thought it would be something special because of the price. I mean, it must be really amazing to be this expensive, right? It's really no different. In fact, I have to say it was actually the worst product I've ever used in covering my gray hairs. I couldn't believe how much I could still see my grays after I dyed it. The color is very nice and there's literally none of that horrible dye smell you get with other box colors. But if covering gray is important to you, skip this entirely. I got better results with a 3 dollar box of family dollar hair dye than I got with this. I followed the directions exactly so... I don't know. It was so not worth the cost. Definitely won't be buying again because the price is really overblown. You're paying for the fancy packaging.

I didn’t think haircolor in a box could vary between brands until now. It was more expensive and I hesitated but my hair needed color and shine and I got it. I color Ed root to tip. I not only got color and shine but my hair was treated. It’s silky and shiny with dimensional color.
