I left my expectations open, thinking, well, I can always bleach it out if I hate it. What I did: Bleach, toner, test strip, color Picture #1 is my hair at starting point: naturally reddish hair, bleached, with an overlay of semi-permanent Clairol Color Gloss-up Rose Gold plus some streaks of Jazzing Bold Gold, done about 6 week earlier. I bleached it, I toned it. Picture #2 is what it looked like after toning, so that was the starting point for the color. I did a test strip of the color, but didn't put much on or leave it on very long. It wasn't very dark. Then I put Smokey Mauve over my whole head. Picture #3 is what my hair looked like after leaving the color on for over an hour. My hair took up so much color that almost no color came off when I rinsed it. As you can see, my hair is pretty short, but there was plenty of dye; I even had some left over. So, is this mauve? Purple-ish? Anything I was expecting? Noooo. I'm going to leave it this way for a while. It's way darker than any color I've ever had, but it's basically a pretty color. So who knows what color you'll get? It will probably be a surprise.

I was so excited to use this product after a friend had recommended it. As a true 90s babe, I started with Punky color, back then it was the most pigmented dye to use besides koolaid. I had been dying my hair for about 15ish years. Then took a huge hiatus. Fast forward.. I bleached to a blonde, used a toner for reference as my starting color. The results color chart showed it would still be smokey, it wasn’t. It ended up being a magenta color. The color was really vibrant but not the same shade at all. Consistency was more of a gloss than creamy. I used half the jar for 2 small sections. Bummed it feels like a waste of money since the color wasn’t Smokey or Mauve ish at all. I ended up using a clarifying shampoo to get most of the color out, then a mix of 3 artic fox colors to get a closer match. I really wanted this color to work! With all the new companies & advancements made since the 90s, I was really hoping this color would take. Insert sad face here. Wish I would have taken a pic before changing the color.

My new go to semi-permanent hair color! I love this hair color! It is very pigmented, but didn’t keep bleeding when I washed it out! I haven’t had any bleeding on my pillowcases or sheets! I did have to use two because one only covered half my hair. It came in a smaller package than I thought, which is ok. I just need to make sure I buy two every time. If you have longer hair than me, you will need to buy 3 or 4. I have used Artic Fox, Lime Crime, Strwberry Leopard, Iroiro, and Ion vivid colors and by far Lunar Tides is the best out of all of them in my opinion! I would say Lime Crime is my second favorite. But, I love that LT is cheaper! Just sucks that it’s only available online! Also, when I received the color, it did NOT come leaked at all! So I’m not sure why a lot of people received ones that have leaked. Maybe because of the temperature? Mine came perfectly packaged with plastic around each and when I opened it, the white cover over the top was in damaged and sealed perfect! I ordered the Smokey Mauve, but my hair was so blonde (practically white) that it has more purple in it. But it came out exactly as it showed for the type of blonde you would have! So I really like that they gave accurate color results! You can see how blonde I was! Also, my hair is extremely damaged, and I did use a neutral protein filler to help make sure the color came on evenly! I 100% recommend this brand!!! Oh and the smell!!!!! Such a yummy smell!!

So granted one of my jars showed up crushed, one jar was plenty enough to do my just past shoulder length hair. Everyone keeps raving about the scent, its meh. It left my hair too soft, like unmanagable wont stay in a pony tail soft. The color? VIBRANT, but not the color I wanted/ordered. I ordered smokey mauve; I got a full mane of bright purple hair. Like radiant almost neon purple hair. My hair was a bleached blonde. I switched from using pulp riot to this and while I'm overall pleased with how well it covers, and I've washed it twice and there hasn't been a noticeable fade, and it doesn't bleed like some semi-perm hair colors.

I love the smell of this product, the color is definitely temporary but If you want it to last longer I’d suggest leaving it in your hair for AWHILE. I left it in for 35 mins on freshly bleached hair so some parts picked up better then others but I feel I’d you used this on non freshly bleached hair/on longer it would apply more evenly and last longer for sure! I really love the color and want to switch to something else soon so as a temp color for me I’m not disappointed at all just remember to keep it in a lot longer if you want it to last!!

I used to as the instructed per the bottle and this color turned out completely wrong. My hair had been previously lightened about a month or more before use and when I used the “Smokey mauve” it turned my hair bright magenta pink ish color and I still had blonde streaks in my hair. Maybe I didn’t use enough maybe I should have let it go brown before use. I’m just very disappointed. I’ve used lunar tides before when I had gone a very dark green and it was gorgeous perfect color exactly as expected but this Smokey mauve was a complete miss. I’ll have to dye over it.
