When you need a skillet that can go to really high temperatures, you can't beat cast iron. I strongly prefer this Made in USA one over the imports, because I don't want my cooking pan to be made out old scrap engine blocks. They're not expensive and they don't wear out. I bought this skillet to make Tamagoyaki, or a Japanese style omelette. There are some actual special pans made for this that are available on Amazon--they are made in China, often non-stick, and all cheap stamped steel construction. I thought this may work being the same general shape. And it does. In fact, I think it probably works better than the special pans because they are all thin and won't hold heat steady as nicely as this heavy cast iron pan will. Added benefit, this is about half the cost. It also works just as well as a round skillet for normal skillet uses, and more efficiently uses stove space. Excellent for searing meat. Just a great skillet. The only thing do buy a something to slip over the handle especially if you want to make Tamagoyaki to insulate your hand with. That or a oven glove (don't use a clumsy oven mitt or pot holder). ... show more

I like the Lodge square skillet a lot. It works better when frying bacon than a round pan. The only thing I don’t like is the coating on the pan. When taking food from the pan, it makes a horrible sound because of the coating. I have cooked in iron skillets for over 70 years and they were smooth as is my very old round one is that I use now. Lodge needs to find another way to apply a non-stick coating. Delivery from Amazon was great as usual. ... show more

I have replaced all of my nonstick pans with cast iron, it is a little harder to clean but the food taste so much better than the plastic taste from the nonstick. Cast iron is worth every penny.
