This 3 qt chicken fryer is deeper than standard skillets 10 1/4" diameter, 3" deep. This 10-1/4” pan features two handles for heavy lifting and a cast iron cover. The Lodge 3-qt. "chicken fryer" is just what it should be: easy to use, easy to clean up, perfect for all kinds of things, especially meat recipes that call for a lot of liquid or many ingredients - like stews or pot roasts. We use it more often than our 5-qt. Dutch oven, which is too big for most everyday meals. This one goes in the oven, too, just like a Dutch oven but with a handy skillet handle. Cleanup with a long-handled brush under hot running water is simple. After the first few uses, you really don't need to re-season it very often, if ever. For young people new to cooking, I recommend this item along with 2 ordinary Lodge skillets (say, 9 and 10 inches), and a round Lodge griddle with handle (perfect for making pancakes and grilled cheese sandwiches). These 4 pieces will take care of many cooking needs. For use & care, just Follow the Simple Directions provided, and don't overthink it. Never put cast iron in the dishwasher or the fridge. Wash and dry after each use. Lodge makes good stuff, and it will outlast you! I use my grandmother's 9-inch skillet nearly every day, and it's well over 100 years old - still works like new. P.S. - The deep skillet is too narrow at the bottom to fit more than 2 or 3 chicken pieces; and the idea of deep-fried chicken is not how I was taught to do it.     • Oh the versatility!
I have a few Lodge cast iron cookware, including the 8", 12-1/4" shallow skillets and THIS 10-1/2" deep skillet with lid. Over time, it dawned on me that all I really needed was this deep skillet. With its size and depth, there is almost nothing this skillet cannot do. You can cook an egg and some bacon in it in the morning (no need for the 8"), make some wonton soup in it for lunch (no need for a sauce pan), stir-fry some chicken in it for dinner (no need for a wok), cook up some really fancy dishes with it in the oven, etc. The lid itself is well made. It fits so nicely and its weight helps create a tight seal. I love this so much that I bought one for each of my children to take to college. If you are worried about how to clean, don't be. It's iron, so scrubbing it with soap and a stainless steel mesh scrubber is absolutely fine. Clean it, rinse it, dry it (on cooktop) and stow it away (in the oven itself if you are short in storage space). That's easy, isn't it? With those said, I'll end my review with a word of warning, this piece is pretty heavy. It might be heavier than you have imagined. I got this on sale so, thumbs up number one right there. I like that it came with a lid, Thumbs up number two. And the depth, well, I didn't really want a deep one but now that I have it, thumbs up number three. Everything about this tank of a pan looks and feels like quality, thumbs up four. Food cooks beautifully and evenly in it which gets it a fifth thumbs up. Cleaning takes a little getting used to if you are not familiar with cast iron. The trick is, don't clean it in the traditional way most cookware is cleaned. Most times, I simply wipe it out with paper towels. If certain foods stick a little or leave residue, resist scrubbing with anything coarse or harsh. I know it's cast iron and feels like a Sherman tank but treat it gently when cleaning, keep it "seasoned" with a light coat of canola oil or some vegetable oil of your choice and you'll see why I am giving it a sixth thumbs up. Are you ready for this: I don't have a stove (long story). I have a propane grill that I use for almost everything that is more that my toaster oven can handle so, I set this pan on the grill, keep the flame fairly low since cast iron conducts and distributes heat so well and it works like a charm. I've always used cast iron on open flame, a camp fire, gas stove, my propane grill so, I can't say what it would be like on an electric stove. They only have five stars here so that's what I'm giving it. ... show more

    • THIS Is the Cast Iron Pan You Didn't Know You Needed & Will Use For Everything!
When this arrived the box was so low profile that I didn't realize what was in it. I wouldn't have know it was my Lodge pan if the name hadn't been on the front of the box. For cast iron, it was surprisingly lightweight. This baby is 10.25” wide & only 3” deep. But it's the perfect size to fry a entire chicken, make a deep dish apple pie, spaghetti & meat sauce for 4 & anything you need to bake. They come pre-seasoned but I always season my cast iron pans myself before using them. Best of all, the low profile makes it easy to store almost anywhere. Just turn the lid upside down & place it on top of the pan. And at under $40, it's a great price. If you like to cook, you will LOVE this pan! ... show more

The media could not be loaded. I have been using this cast iron skillet for 2 weeks now. When I received the skillet I washed it and seasoned it myself and then started using it. Below is my detailed review Pros: 1) Food tastes great when cooked in this skillet 2) Food does not burns or stick. 3) 3-Quartz size is perfect for a meal of 2-3 people. It is deep enough to cook curry recipes. I generally make Indian curry recipes in this and have no complaints about the depth or size 4) The overall structure is very strong and durable, you can be sure that the quality is top class 5) The lid fits perfectly and if you are using the lid while cooking it captures the aroma of the food which makes the food to smell amazing 6)Affordable and long lasting if maintained properly Cons: 1) A little heavy, not your normal cookware weight 2) If you are in general a lazy person, you should give it a thought before ordering this item because it takes a little effort in cleaning and maintaining the skillet. You cannot wash it in the dishwasher also you need to season it after every wash 3) The skillet lid I received has small rust spots, if you look closely at the pictures you will be able to tell.
