Please read this section before using your cookware for the first time. The information it contains will help you achieve the best possible cooking results.Enameled cast iron is a remarkable and robust material that performs well with modern requirements for food preparation and cooking. Whether you choose to stir-fry, slow-cook a casserole, sear a steak or bake a cake, there is a shape that is suitable. Cast iron performs well for either slow cooking or high-temperature searing.Cast iron can be used reliably on any heat source, including induction, and with any oven or grill. It has the ability to retain heat efficiently, which allows for use of lower heat settings in stovetop and oven cooking. On the table, a hot covered dish will keep food hot for second servings.Cast iron can also be used to keep foods cold. A chilled dish becomes an ideal cold food server on a hot summer day. It can also be placed in the freezer for food storage or advanced food preparationHigh heat temperatures should only be used for boiling water for vegetables or pasta, or for reducing the consistency of stocks or sauces. High heats should never be used to preheat a pan before lowering the heat for cooking. Cast iron retains heat so efficiently that overheating will cause food to burn or stick. The vitreous enamel surface is impermeable and therefore ideal for raw or cooked food storage, and for marinating with acidic ingredients such as wine.

  • I love this. It's beautiful and wonderful.
First, I should let you know I returned this product because I found it for a lower price elsewhere, but there was NOTHING wrong with it. The manufacturing quality was high. The seller was prompt in delivery and great with the refund. As a product, the Le Creuset dutch ovens are amazing. A beautiful coating of enamel that is super-easy to clean. The casting is solid. The heat is evenly distributed throughout. The lid forms a perfect seal to keep steam in. The color is gorgeous, a graduation from dark red to a bright cheerful red at the top. I don't know how I went for so long without one of these! ... show more

  • Darn these things are expensive. But they are good.
I do use this dutch oven (and its bigger 7 qt sister) a lot, on the stove-top and in the oven. The enamel coating really does fend off hardened residue pretty darn well - with a good soak in soapy water and a vigorous scrub with a green nylon wool pad. I just wish Le Creusets weren't so darned expensive! This size is good for cooking for 2-4 people; the 7 quart version is quite a bit bigger but still fits on a stove. ... show more

  • Love this line of cookware
I just purchased this dutch oven for my daughter and her husband. I am sure they will be thrilled with it, in fact my daughter asked for one based on the good service we have gotten from ours. I own three other pieces of Le Creuset as well and am pleased with them all. The dutch oven is showing its age. The interior enamel is wearing thin and the exterior enamel has some minor chips. We use the dutch oven a lot, at least one or twice per week. I bought all my Le Creuset pieces just before I married 37 years ago. It is the only cookware we bought starting out that is still with us. I am very confident it will survive us. It is the best, the very best. ... show more

  • Good stuff
This is a great gift for almost anyone. High quality and red color brings a smile when it is opened, years later we're still thanked for it. We have two and use them all of the time. Forget the crockpot, use this in the oven at 220 degrees. MUCH better.

  • One of the best investment I ever made.
I have owned several Dutch oven and this one is one of the best I ever have. I used it almost everyday. The heat distribution is good. I am happy I made this investment in getting it.

  • It is a really nice dutch oven, but.....
Her old dutch oven was terribly heavy so it was tough to hang on to when it was wet. She did a lot of damage with that old dutch oven. This is heavy enough to be a nice dutch oven, but only about half as heavy as her old one, and she really likes that. The only problem is that there is a tiny pinhole flaw in the finish inside, in the bottom. We are thinking of returning it and getting another just like it. ... show more
