I absolutely love this clock! I love the brushed metal housing and bezel instead of plastic. It feels substantial and has heft and is not flimsy. The clock is BIG (14" diameter!) and can be seen easily across the room. It also has standard Arabic numerals and not the dreaded Roman numerals. Don't know why people are enamored with X's and I's when one simple character will suffice (and there's numbers at all positions... I hate when they leave some or all blank). But my favorite thing about the clock is the really cool precision clockwork and how the hands line up with the dial face properly. That's always been a weird thing with me. When the second hand is on the 12, the minute hand better be right on top of a minute! And at noon and midnight, ALL THREE hands should be aligned right on the 12! Is it just me??? But this clock is dead-on accurate. Since I hung it, I have literally come out and watched the minute hand move exactly 1/4 of the way between minutes every 15 seconds, to be right on top of the proper minute as the second hand reaches the top. You may call it OCD... I call it demanding an accurate clock and this one is. The atomic feature is sweet. As soon as you have the batteries in, it will start to do its thing. Some other review here thought there was something wrong because it sat at the initial preset spot for too long. Having worked with WWV timing signals, I know the clock needs to wait for a very specific time-sync signal that only comes once every so often. If you missed the last one before your clock enters the initial time set, you'll have to be patient and wait for the next one (or your clock is in a bad radio spot and may have missed the signal altogether). Mine set itself fine within an hour, and is literally in sync with my cell phone time. There are switch settings on the back for daylight savings if your area uses that insane archaic nonsense. There's also a neat battery-saving feature that disables the second hand at 11:00 PM, and comes back on at 5 or 6 AM (I forget which). The batteries are 'C' size (which seems odd these days) and you have the option to put either 2 or 4 batteries in. With 4, you won't need to change them for a very long time. Another person asked if it "ticked" or made noise. Granted, I don't have the best hearing, but I can barely hear the second hand ticking when I stand right under it. I sometimes hear the minute hand move its quarter-tic between minutes, but again I have to be right under it. Maybe if you're really OCD about quiet in your bed at night and have great hearing, you might have issues (I mean with the clock tick... your personal 'tic' about 'ticks' notwithstanding... I have my own with clock hands but don't care about the tick!) I like this clock so much I bought another for the kitchen. In a year where I've returned a lot of stuff that just wasn't the quality I felt it should be, I'm really happy with this simple clock that works - and works well - and looks great.

This is the clock you should buy if you live in the south-east US. I live in South Florida. In 2021, I purchased one of the predecessor models and it has been working flawlessly since. After a move to a new house, I needed a couple of additional clocks. I purchased two of a different brand, but after 5 days they would not sync. Sent them packing back to Amazon and bought two of the La Crosse 404-1235UA-PL clocks. Within 5 minutes of installing the batteries, they were up and synchronized with the WWVB signal. A little more expensive than the ones I sent back, but they work. There is a ticking noise as the second and minute hands advance. It is only noticeable in the dead of night when there aren't any other sounds in the house. I have one in my bedroom, and I may try to apply some sound deadening material to the plastic housing if it starts to annoy. But the best thing about these clocks is they work. They are accurate. and with four "C" cells, they lasted almost 4 years. So long that I forgot the low battery indicator is when the second hand stops on the 6... It still ran for 5 months until I bought the new ones and read the instructions again. Yup, this is a quality product in a world of junk. You won't be disappointed with the La Crosse Technology 404-123UA-PL clock.

For a relatively inexpensive "Atomic" clock, it is simply amazing. When I received the clock, I preset the switches for my time zone and whether my region accepts or ignores Daylight Savings Time. In went the batteries to where the clock raced to find midnight, then raced to 4:00 and then it stopped turning. Ok, good, it was searching for NIST signal... By the time I got out my ladder and my hammer to set a picture frame hook - it found the correct time for my area. It has had it kept *To The Second(tm)* even when compared to other atomic time devices I currently possess. Hands and touch free for the past month. The clock face is a bright, white card with black numerals. Hands are precisely lined up and both are extremely easy to read, even across the entire room without glasses. A bright red second sweep hand with counterbalance is to the tick, dead accurate on the face. The body is of a quality and real stainless steel, no anodized plastic here! The face is covered in a domed glass crystal. Bright, clear and aberration free. The main body you do not see is of sturdy, non-flexing ABS black plastic. She is of the right size for my room, the dial face an amazing 14" in diameter. There are other color choices and options, but I didn't want a black/charcoal faced clock in my bedroom. The neutral colors and brushed stainless literally make it dissolve and self-match room color and decor. Now this is NOT a silent quartz movement. It does make an audible tick you can hear across the room. Every 15 seconds, it advances the minute and hour hands with a pronounced *CLICK*. This is not a bother to me at all - I find machine sounds rather calming. But if you're sensitive about that sort of thing, do not mount this close or directly above your headboard. No. Just no. There is nothing "atomic" or radioactive in the clock. That happens somewhere else. It's just a quartz movement clock with a radio that listens to the Nationally broadcast NIST signal that's derived from real, radioactive Cesium 135 clocks that count the vibrations of said Cesium in a vacuum. This clock is ABSOLUTELY safe. What makes it "ULTRATOMIC"? NIST out of Boulder, CO had in the past updated the broadcast technique for transmitting Universal time code. The original 60KHz signal added an enhanced side-band transmission that beefed up an already robust time signal with additional data. Unlike your original or standard atomic clock, this one listens to BOTH signals at the same time with a very unique twin antenna receiver. It almost guarantees a correct time code reception that others struggle to rival. Is it perfect? No. There can be circumstances where time code reception can be still very difficult. But let me tell you that the La Cross is exemplary in reception because of the dual antenna setup. It can get reception of correction data where nobody else can. But the signal is not only relatively weak, orientation of the clock will have the greatest rate of success. The signal primarily crosses the US in a East-West direction depending on your locale. Distance, weather and even solar activity come into play. That's why your atomic watches and clocks try a few times in the dead of wee-hours morning to receive adjustment data. Daytime solar radiation and heat "noise" hinders reception. If you can put this clock up on a wall, away from electronics, WI-FI, heavy current draw motors - with *either* the face or back pointed in an East-West vector? It. Works. Exceptionally. I live in the fringes of the East coast, in the south, as far as you could possibly get from Colorado.... Other atomics absolutely struggle until I take them outside occasionally. Yet, mounted so that the rear of the clock faces west - she's never skipped a beat. Highly recommended!

This clock took much less time to synchronize the time than previous LaCrosse Atomic Clocks. The old clock used to need to wait until the early morning hours to receive the signal and it was fussy where it was hung. This clock is great. The setup was easy and the extra batteries for longer life was a nice option. The appearance is very clean and easy to read. One difference from the previous atomic clock that it replaced is the movement of the minute hand. Instead of making small adjustments as the second hand sweeps, this clock moves the minute hand at 00, 15, 30 and 45 seconds. In a quiet room, you will hear it as the sound is louder than the second sweep. Still, it is a nice clock and was reasonably priced. I would recommend it to anyone that asks!

It's a nice, clean, attractive looking clock. Easy to read. I set the clock up in the afternoon and hung it on the wall. The hands moved to 8:00 when I put in the batteries. I came back with 5 minutes of sunset and the clock was already keeping correct time. I'm on the east coast at about the same latitude as Ft. Collins CO. We're far enough away that we can only catch a signal at night. I mounted the clock on an east facing wall. The clock must have received the signal ` after sundown The clock keeps perfect time and the seconds hand hits the marks every time, albeit with a significant amount of backlash. I always thought it a mean trick to satisfy my OCD with a highly accurate instrument, only to drive me crazy with a wonky seconds hand that misses the hashmarks 30% of the time. This clock gives me no such anxiety. The feature that cost it a full star in my review is the clock requires type C batteries. Because of alkaline batteries tendency to leak, I'd advise using lithium batteries. It will run on 2 batteries but it takes 6 for 6 months between changes. Using rechargeable lithium batts almost doubles the cost of the clock, though cheaper in the long run.

My wife hates the aesthetics, but I love the clock. I'm a form follows function guy. In my perception, the primary purpose of a clock to reliably display accurate time, which the La Crosse 404-1235UA clock does. One of the things I like about this clock is the robust electro-mechanical drive mechanism. Many large analog clocks are underpowered by a single AA battery and start losing time when the battery voltage drops just a little from a new voltage near 1.6V (nominal loaded voltage of a new Alkaline battery is 1.5V, but unloaded open circuit it is higher) to the mid 1.4s, which is still good enough for a flashlight, but not enough oomph to drive a large dial analog clock. This clock uses 2 larger capacity C size batteries in series so the voltage is double (1.5x2=3 volts), and you can optionally add another pair in parallel for more amp hours (a bigger tank of the same pressure). Setup was simple. I live on the coast in the Pacific Time zone at the base of a mountain range that obstructs our line toward the transmitting station in Colorado. The clock's default time zone is PT, so I didn't need to change any of the default settings. Simply put in new batteries and hung the clock on an interior wall downstairs, not near any windows. When the battery connection was made, the clock mechanism cranked around to 4 PM. About 5 minutes later (after hanging the clock on the wall) it cranked again to the correct time within a second of another La Crosse RCC (radio controlled clock) that I have nearby. I couple of comments on some of the earlier reviews (I read all 6 of them prior to purchase). My clock purchased from Amazon in October 2016 doesn't have the battery compartment issue or the wall standoff gap mentioned in other reviews. The batteries fit snug and the clock sits flush against the wall. Perhaps La Crosse updated the design? I do concur with accurate and descriptive comments about audible "ticking", so you wouldn't want it in your bedroom, but the ticking is minor and not an issue in our dining room. I've had several RCC clocks in the past. The newer ones seem to be more reliable than the models I tried in the 90s. I think the LCD models have an advantage in that they don't need a power-hungry mechanical drive mechanism, but I needed to replace a round analog clock in a prominent location. I did some research and discovered the new Phase Shift Modulation ( NIST aka PM or BPSK ~ Binary-Phase-Shift-Keying) technology, which NIST began transmitting in 2012. My understanding is that PM (or PSK) it somewhat comparable to RS-485 vs RS-232. The phase inversion results in a "differential" signal that is more robust than simple amplitude modulation (AM). PSK is now utilized in many binary radio standards like Bluetooth and Wireless LAN. Sounds good, unfortunately after an extensive web search, this is the only PM clock I found for sale. Fortunately, the La Crosse 404-1235UA clock is well built and seems to be robust. Update, August 2018, about 2 years after my initial 10/2016 purchase: My La Crosse 404-1235UA clock(s) have continued to perform flawlessly. Out of curiosity, I checked the battery voltage. After 22 months of operation each of the 4 Rayovac C cell batteries is reading 1.40 volts. I also purchased a 2nd clock about a year ago, and after 13 months of operation, its Duracell Procell batteries are measuring 1.48 volts. The reason I’m updating my comments is because one of my smaller analog clocks stopped working (not one of the clocks in this review), and since the La Crosse 404-1235UA clocks (I now have 2 of them) have easily been the best clocks I’ve ever owned, I wanted to get something similar, but smaller. I thought by now the market would be dominated by the newer more robust phase shift modulation (PM, or BPSK) signal compared to the legacy pulse width modulation (PWM, based on an amplitude modulation (AM) signal), however the La Crosse 404-1235UA clock is still the only device I can find (at consumer retail pricing) that advertises utilization of the newer PM signaling. The newer PM / BPSK format began broadcasting in 2012. In addition to my newer La Crosse 404-1235UA clocks, I also have a La-Crosse digital clock that as been performing flawlessly for about 5 years, and I think it uses the older PWM / AM signaling. I think the transmitting power was increased when the system was refurbished in 1999, which might explain why the newer clocks are more reliable than the ones I tried in the 1990s, however everything I’ve read indicates the newer PM / PBSK transmitting protocol is significantly more robust than the PWM / AM signaling, plus the mechanical drive mechanism of the La Crosse 404-1235UA is clearly more robust than the underpowered alternatives. In October 2016 I paid $61.76 plus sales tax for my first 404-1235UA. In July 2017 I paid $57.97 plus tax, and today (8/20/2018) Amazon’s price is down to $45.89, which seems like a bargain. As noted above, I think digital clocks that don’t need to physically drive a mechanical mechanism can operate reliably on less power, but I’m still looking for a round analog clock as robust as the La Crosse 404-1235UA but in a smaller size.

This UltrAtomic clock worked in our home which is in a black hole for reception of other atomic clocks so we were very happy. Until it came time to change the batteries. The battery compartment is difficult to work with & in the process of trying to reinsert new batteries, one of the springs broke off. Luckily it was one of the outer battery sockets, so ideally the clock should operate ok with only the two inner sockets. However, once new batteries were inserted, the clock never came back to life. Unfortunately we suspect the springs are bent. Very poor design.
