Ok, so I owned one of these before. It was about 5 years old and I loved it! I gave it to my son because my kids had purchased one of those robot vacuums (Eufy) for me for Christmas. It's just fine, but it doesn't really handle the hair from my cat or all the threads left from quilting. So, I researched and went back to what I know is good! I would never buy anything else other than this Kenmore. People complain that it's heavy. Well, okay........what do you want it to do? Do you want something that will clean your carpet or something you can push easily and leaves you less than satisfied? I guess people will always find something to complain about. If you want something to do a good job and don't mind pushing something a bit heavier, get this vacuum. Truly, there's nothing else that works as good. I like that it's bagged. I don't like bagless vacuums and never have. I'm in my 60's and can handle this just fine. When I'm finished, it's done what I wanted it to do, every single time. ... show more

After my 20-yr-old Hoover finally died, I spent months researching vacuums online, and I finally bought this Kenmore because it had most of the features I was looking for. The user reviews were almost uniformly bad, but it received good ratings from Consumer Reports, so I took a chance. Live and learn. It's a heavy machine that's difficult to manuever. I'm a scrawny 5'7", 110 pounds, and although this vacuum is not self-propelled, it literally drags me through the house. Pulling the vacuum back toward me is not an easy feat. If you have any type of injury or mobility issue, this is probably not the vacuum for you. Also, many other people have pointed out, it's extremely loud. The vacuum hose is ridiculously short, and the telescoping wand doesn't like to stay attached even though it has a locking mechanism to hold it in place. It's advertised as having a 10-ft reach, but I'd be surprised if it's really more than half that. Despite what the listing claims, you are not going to be able to use it to vacuum your ceiling fans unless you live in a Hobbit house. The various brush attachments are angled such that they can really only be used from a standing position, so you will not be able to use them to get down and clean under low furniture. I found trying to vacuum under beds to be impossible. This model is supposed to be good for cleaning up pet hair, but I ended up having to pull a LOT of dog fur out from where it had wrapped around the vacuum brushes and roller. Likewise, this machine is recommended for people with allergies, but I had to clean a considerable amount of dust from the exterior of the machine when I finished vacuuming, so I'm not sure how helpful the HEPA filter or the bagged design on this machine really is. I love love love this vacuum! It really does the job and picks up even hidden dirt better than any vacuum I’ve ever owned. It’s not super light weight, but I’m good with that because it feels very sturdy and it’s not difficult to push. I love the headlight, the dirt indicator and the on board tools. My carpet looked cleaner after the first time I used it. Like it much better than my Dyson or Shark, and I love nice clean hepa filter bag disposal vs. emptying out those dusty canisters and cleaning them. I’ve had it for about a month and I use it almost daily. I would definitely recommend this vacuum! March 2022: my beloved Hoover gets a workout and it’s still going strong! ... show more

I researched for months to find a new vacuum. Consumer Reports had this vacuum rated number one and was skeptical being that so many people rave about Sharks and Dysons. This vacuum blew me away! It is self propelled and has amazing power and suction. My husband and myself were instantly impressed and could see a huge difference in comparison to our other upright. I also love that you can manually adjust for carpet height. We recently got new carpets and we were told the manufacturers warranty would be void if we had a problem and they did a service call and could see the carpet fibers ruined from standard vacuums pulling too hard. We were told to vacuum carpets at lowest setting but I love that I can change the height for rugs and flooring. I am so happy with this purchase! ... show more

    • Bags & Filters Are the Way
I’ve had my eye on a Miele for ages but I just couldn’t pull the trigger on such an expensive vacuum. I turned to Consumer Reports for other budget-friendly alternatives. The Kenmore 31140 was one of their top picks and this and another model have been consistently highly rated. I almost didn’t get it because of some of the reviews about self-propulsion and the hose but went for it. I’m really glad I did! I have been using a Shark Navigator with the removable bin and while I enjoyed it initially, it became clear that the filter isn’t great. The air running through smells worse over time and it sprays particles; it’s pretty weak on tile and hardwood. I have tile, hardwood, and carpeting in my home, so I needed an upright that would do well on a multitude of surfaces. I’ve been really pleased with the Kenmore so far, both with using it as an upright on all my floors and pulling out the hose to pick up debris or pet hair tumbleweeds. It does NOT have a swivel head, so if you really want that, don’t get this model. It took some adjustment initially but the pros outweigh any drawbacks. I don’t find the vacuum overly heavy or noisy, about what you’d expect, and I love not having to empty the canister every ten minutes to complete a vacuum sesh. The filters and bag are doing their job to keep the exhaust air smelling normal and I’m not emptying a bunch of loose dirt and hair into my trash can and putting dirt and allergens into the air. Did not realize it came with drive. Really like the selection switch from carpet to floors works really well. Glad it comes with Heppa filter bag. Should really help with allergies.
