  • Saves me time and worry
Easy to install on my chicken coop. The instructions for programming were clear. It did take some time to figure out the percentage of light for my desired open and close. That took a few nights/mornings to dial that in. We set up an extra 'Blink' brand security camera outside the coop so we could make sure it was open and closed as we were very nervous it would malfunction and we would lose our chickens from a predator. We have active activity nightly from raccoons and badgers (yes, you read that right...badgers) and that was a big concern. The automatic door has now been on our coop for 2 1/2 months. IT IS AWESOME! I don't even think about it. I don't worry about getting home early enough to close up my free ranging birds. I just know that it's going to work. I love that the birds can get out and roam on an early Saturday morning when I'm sleeping in. Great value for the money. Have not used in the winter yet so I can't comment on snow/ice on how it will function. ... show more

  • GREAT door-11 months so far without issues
I waited a couple of months to write this. I have an OverEZ chicken coop and had purchased their door which costs 3x as much as this one—and it never worked right. After a year, I stopped trying. Even plugged into the electric it would malfunction constantly. So, I purchased this door after reading reviews. You will have to alter the install a bit if you have an OverEZ coop because the coop door opening is bigger than this door—I just added a piece of wood. My coop opens into a run that is closed every night and nothing except maybe a rat can get into it. That being said, this door might be a little flimsy if it’s the only thing between your chickens and the great outdoors, but, in my case, it works. I need it as an extra layer of protection and to keep the heat in in the winter when I have their heater going at night. 2 months of use and the 4 AA batteries didn’t fail me even once. Door went up and down like it was supposed to for the past 60 days on the same batteries. I just changed them today to be safe bc I didn’t want to risk it. Also—I installed my door inside of my coop, so, it’s always protected from the elements. Will probably increase the life span, I’m sure. ***UPDATE—it’s been 11 months and this door is still going strong! I just changed the batteries for only the THIRD time in 11 months. I’m thinking of buying a 2nd one of these to configure to my run. ... show more

  • Horrible Design
This product just seems like a college student had an idea, prototyped it, then released it without ever actually testing in a real life scenario. I'm fairly certain this thing is just an arduino microcontroller wrapped in a hunk of plastic. It's powered with 4 AA batteries that die in a couple weeks, and YOU HAVE TO REPROGRAM IT EVERY TIME IT DIES. Like a solid 15 minutes worth of calibrating it every couple weeks. And when it dies, the door is stuck in it's current position. So if it's open, the chickens are completely unprotected that night. Kind of ridiculous for a product designed to remove human input for a monotonous task. Especially considering all it needs is a few bytes worth of storage and some common sense to prevent the memory from being wiped on reset. Also, the door itself is TINY. I have very average size chickens, and they barely fit through the door. I can definitely see larger breed chickens not fitting through this door at all. And the only thing holding this door closed is gravity and the weight of the very thin sheet metal that the door is constructed from. I wouldn't trust this thing to keep predators out of the coop. A curious fox would have no problem pushing it open with its nose. I know this because my dogs open it with ease. Luckily, they are very friendly with the chickens. I wish I invested in abetter product, or literally just built one myself with an arduino, stepper motor, piece of string, fishing swivel, and sheet metal square. That's literally ALL this is. Not worth $100. Not worth $20 in my opinion. It's more work than it's worth, considering you have to check if it's working EVERY night or risk your chickens being eaten. ... show more

  • Works and saves time
I'm a small time, trying farmer. I'm also active duty military stationed at Offutt AFB. So, sometimes I work late, or go early, etc etc. But, this device has saved us from having to open/close the coop for our chickens over and over again. I've forgotten, so has my wife, to close the door. We've been late on opening the door because I left early and she was focused on the kids. So, this has allowed our chickens to come and go based upon the sun! It's waterproof, battery holds the charge, let's us know how much power is left, and opens and closes as it says. it's slow enough that chickens won't get caught. I've got one dumb rooster who won't go in when all the others do, and he's been left out twice now, but, I've got 6 other roosters, so......it's okay DOWNSIDE - so, what's the negative? The only one we have is that it doesn't hold time. So, I can't program it to open at a certain time or close. It has not effected the use. I actually prefer the sun timer....since it's the only thing I've been able to use. I am buying another one for my quack shack......for our ducks. ... show more
