  • Some poor finishes on an otherwise fun new instrument
This is the first ubass I’ve ever used and I’m enjoying the instrument. It’s a lot of fun to try to translate guitar skills to a ukulele. This Kala ubass had poorly finished frets. They are sharp, despite a hand written “30 point QC check” Playing it for a few hours has cut up my fingers a bit. I’ll need to work out how to file them down to allow me to playir return the instrument. If I had picked it up in a store, there’s no way I would have purchased it and it’s disappointing to end I with a repair job right off the bat. ... show more

  • Solid little bass. Sounds amazing plugged in.
This is a really fun solid little instrument! It takes some getting used to those huge strings but even my 13 year old was playing scales after a couple minutes. It’s pretty easy to get fret buzz on the E string so you have to adjust technique a little. I don’t have a bass amp but plugged it into an old fender twin reverb and it sounded great! Acoustic it sounds good but not fantastic. Plugged in it really does sound like a bigger bass. The strings are much easier on your fingers and really nice for getting my kids playing. Built in tuner is a nice convenience although you really have to turn those tuners a lot to see a difference. ... show more

  • Um...no. Overpriced for bland finish and their proprietary rubber strings should’ve stayed in R&D.
Nice and fun bass with surprising bass but not impressed with finish, you could have done a little better for $250. Shouldn’t be an extra $50 for spalted. And what’s with the rubber strings? They make another model with the regular metal roundwounds...why not provide those instead? Weird bendy rubbery sticky strings no one has ever used aren’t preferred. I expected way more from kala. Buy the other model with regular strings or don’t bother. ... show more

  • I got more compliments for the sound than my studio bass
The sound is so rich and warm. We were looking to do a few unplugged sets… and I heard the U Bass is pretty amazing. It didn’t disappoint. Our sound engineer said you should dump your $1100 Yamaha studio bass and play the UBass all the time… this was echoed by many others. It’s a ton of fun to play… you can just pick it up and play, but plugged in is where it really shines. The rubber strings take so getting used to… and don’t stay in tune very long. A great buy for under $300. ... show more

Some A string buzz which Kala customer service took care of quickly.

  • So much fun!
This my 2021 covid project. It sounds great, is wonderful for learning how to play bass but still being ukulele size. Also, I've used it in my classroom as a fun auxiliary instrument/ demonstrator of thickness & elasticity and its effect on pitch (if you're a hard-core music nerd).
