Description

It's been three decades since Ibanez was in the banjo biz, but they're back with a bang...or is it a twang? Old-timers may recall Ibanez was quite enamored with banjo-building, having even collaborated on an artist signature model with the late great Earl Scruggs. But, things change, and hair bands happen. And now, they're back at it and in the Ibanez tradition, the B200 delivers a sweet 5-string closed-back banjo at a price that won't break the bank.

  • Nice banjo
Nice banjo for the price but surprisingly heavy with the full back. Good sound and great looks.

  • Purchased for my wife, a new banjoist.
For some unknown reason, my wife asked for a banjo this Christmas. She played drums for awhile as a kid, but had no other music performance experience, so I more than surprised. I'm a guitarist, so I approached this purchase the same way I would buy a guitar. I wanted something very playable. And since it was hers, it needed to look pretty. This banjo exceeded both criteria. PROS: The banjo has nice low action and the bound neck is easy to play. The frets are highly polished and you won't find the least bit of "fret sprout". I can only pretend to play this banjo, but I can still tell that it's a very playable instrument. The intonation is spot on, and the tone is bright and percussive with a long sustain. The inlays and metalwork are both beautiful and well constructed. We've also discovered that fits in a dreadnought guitar case, if needed. CONS: The banjo needed some set-up. The floating bridge was not in place (as I expected) and the tuning machines needed tightening before they'd hold a tune. These were easy things to do for someone who's built a few guitars, but there were no instructions and would probably challenge a new player. Also, the chromatic tuner didn't work. We put the tuner's battery in a garage door opener and that worked fine. So I'm sure it was the tuner, and not the battery, that was defective. But that's OK because the chromatic tuner on her phone works better. It's a great sounding/playing/looking banjo. We're almost a month into her banjo experiment and she still practices several times a day, every day. So, thank you Ibanez. ... show more
