  • Beautiful Ukulele
It feels great and sounds great. Mine has a more plain looking front and back but the sides look pretty interesting and all the wood has a nice flash to it when you tilt it back and forth. I also like the overall color of the wood. I’m really happy with this selection. It’s my first ukulele and I think it’s really nice. ... show more

  • Great for the price!
I LOVE. This is my second ukulele, and my first concert uke. I've played a bunch of different kinds of ukes though, and for the $100-150, I like this one. It's been great right out of the box (no buzzing, nothing flat at all). It has a very mellow, beautiful sound. Unlike a lot of ukes at this price range, the tuners do not feel cheap. And realize also that it is very beautiful. The picture is not quite right, though. There is a black stripe down the back. ... show more

  • Love At First Strum
I am a BIG fan of KALA and couldn't wait to (literally) get my hands on this Concert Ukulele. I was a little nervous buying an instrument on-line and having not strummed it in person but I took the chance anyway. I am so glad I did! This is one of the best Uke's I own and it sounds and feels and plays GREAT! Super Fantastic! The packaging was great and it took hardly any time to get my front door. I would strongly suggest this ukulele to any musician, professional or just starting out. This is one of those uke's you could own for life and it would still sound and play great over the years! ... show more

  • All the black bindings are painted-on. Deceptive Product!
I just bought a Kala concert ukulele, model KA-CEM, from another vendor. According to Kala, this is an "exotic" model. In reality, it's below a basic model. All of the black bindings on mine are painted on. They are all fake bindings! I feel deceived. Please see my uploaded photo. As pointed out by others, the black stripe running down the center of the back is easy to spot as being just paint. What hasn't been pointed out previously, is the black edging is also just paint. Look carefully at my photo, where the neck heel meets the rear black edging. You can see the paint goes around the neck heel (not under it). It was painted on, after the ukulele was assembled, just like the rear stripe! ... show more

  • Excellent instrument.
Beautiful instrument, tuned up fast but expecting to tune again a few times, not unusual in a new instrument. Tuners smooth and hold the strings really well. Lovely sound. Couldn’t ask for better. Kala makes a wonderful instrument sound and quality wise.

  • GREAT UKE TO START WITH!!!!!
I recieved this ukulele several day ahead of schedule, which was impressive since im in PA and it ships from texas. The uke itself was in perfect condition with the exeption of the nuts on the pegs being loose, which caused rattling. But this was an easy fix. The sound of the instrument is very bright and crisp unlike many toy ukuleles you see these days. The finish id just beautiful impressing anyone who sees it. All in all i would recommend this ukulele to anyone looking to learn for the first time or picking one up to add to their collection! ... show more

  • I'm still in love with it
I returned a different uke and ordered this one instead, largely for the looks. I'm still in love with it, and it's held up great for me so far. I'm very much a beginner so I can't speak for its acoustics compared to other models or anything, but I'm very happy with its feel and its sound in addition to the aesthetics and durability. ... show more

  • Cosmetic flaws, thin/sour sound
As per instructions on the shipping label, I contacted Kala Brand directly when I saw several irregularities on the KA-CEM I received last week. Unlike the photos on Kala's website and the seller's website, my uke has a painted black stripe down the center of the back; I could see it was paint and not a strip of joint binding because it's not straight-edge true (but very slightly wavering) and because tiny bits of paint seepage flashing are visible upon very close inspection of the edges of the stripe. Also, the top end of the stripe was slightly off-center when compared with the bottom of the neck heel. In addition, there's a nearly 2-inch-long mark (it looks like a misplaced pencil scribing line) visible on the sound board next/parallel to the right edge of the fretboard. Indicating that the stripe was not applied to hide any back joint blemish, a Kala rep told me that all KA-CEMs currently have the black stripe down the back (which was applied in the latest production run for some unspecified reason). But he agreed that the scribing-like mark on the sound board was an issue. He said the photos I sent to Kala would be used "for reference in pin-pointing cosmetic flaws with our factories." I'm still deciding whether to use my 30-day return privileges with the seller. The flip-side is the uke otherwise looks nice, plays well, and sounds good. (The black strips around the outer edges of the uke's top and bottom appear to be real binding strips, not paint.) UPDATE (10/13): I should have returned this when I had the chance; instead, I've retired it to its box and only play the far superior Oscar Schmidt I subsequently bought (the OU6). By comparison, the Kala sounds thin and plinky. And though a chromatic tuner says the Kala's intonation is only somewhat sharp on the 12th-fret octave, the uke just doesn't sound true anywhere on the fretboard even though the action (string heighth) and build geometry appear correct. Sour sound + cosmetic flaws = $100 disappointment. ... show more
