  • The best of the small Carson microscopes.
I didn't originally intend to try out several of the Carson scopes, but this sort of happened. I kept two of the three I tried, and this is my favorite by far. The more powerful one was, uh, more powerful, but the drawback was that even on the lowest power the magnification was so strong that it was difficult to find the tiny thing you wanted to look at. With this one, the low magnification 20x setting is perfect for finding the tiny thing you want to look at, and once you've found it, you can zoom to 60x. And 60x is pretty good considering that hand-held magnifying lenses are generally no stronger than 10x. There are a couple of minor quibbles. The LED could be brighter, and while the button switch is much better than the lousy sliding switch on the keychain 20x model, it evidently facilitates inadvertent activation of the LED and running down the battery. I had left the battery in, with the scope in its original box and the box tossed into a small pack. For two or three days, and when I grabbed it to use, the battery was dead. I don't think it is likely that the LED normally uses this much battery energy, so I think it must have stayed on. ... show more

  • Good value and useful zoom range
If you just like to look at small "stuff" quickly without a lot of preparation, this little microscope paired with a good 7x hand lens (a Hastings triplet which will cost several times what this 'scope costs!) is just about all you need - more magnification than 60x is often not very usable with a small 'scope like this in the field or even at your "lab" desk or table. I have many microscopes including classic binocular compound models like the Nikon S-Ke and Bausch&Lomb Dynazoom, and stereo zoom microscopes like the Meiji EMZ-5 and smaller Olympus 10-20x and 20-40x models, which all have excellent optics. Well, this little microscope is not quite in that class, but for the price it's a great little tool that gives pretty good views. The resolution is adequate but because of the designed long working distance and low NA (Numerical Aperture), it reaches its diffraction limit quickly as you zoom up in magnification. Nevertheless because of its low cost, small size, portability and ease of use it's a good purchase and I'd buy it again. ... show more

  • Lighting is completely inadequate, unstable viewing as it must be held above the specimen.
Every one handheld microscopes that I have tried have been barely adequate for the task Inadequate light for a good view of the specimen and cheap plastic optics. In the case of this unit the light is positioned such that the specimen is NOT LIGHTED when turned on. You have to manually hold the scope above the specimen and try at the same time to hold it still enough to focus through cheap plastic optics. NOT recommended for children to have to deal with. Take a look at the Carson MicroBrite 20x-40x for kids. The light is positioned much better and a stable base is supplied with a slide holder. Another big plus is the the light only turns on when you hold the button. That way the child does not have to remember to turn it off to save the batteries. ... show more

  • What you see is a mirror image of what you're looking at.
I got this for my wife, who buys and sells vintage silver jewelry. She needs a good loupe for examining hallmarks and signatures. I'm able to use this microscope just fine, although I have to agree that it's so very touchy even when fully zoomed out, to keep your subject in the view field. And then, since your actually seeing a mirror image of the piece you're looking at, you have to keep this in mind when you make the adjustments of the piece you're looking at. Even the smallest movement of the piece can take whatever you're trying to examine right out of view, and this is exacerbated by the fact that you need to move the piece in the opposite direction of where you feel it should go. Hard to explain. I can do it, but my wife has all but given up because it's just too much of a bother to keep he subject in focus. The focus and zoom wheels are so hard to turn that it's nearly impossible to move either of them without again having to move your subject back into the view field. I just leave it zoomed out so I never need to touch that adjustment, and then I set the focus wheel to "very close" and then move the scope up and down (away from and closer to the subject) a tiny bit to get the subject into clear focus. You also need to make certain that the scope is perpendicular to the subject, as the depth of field is so short that even a small piece of jewelry will present as sharp-focus in one place and very soft-focus in others. With some patience and practice, this can be an excellent tool. But do the practice part before you really need it, or it'll be a frustrating experience. Except for the tight, hard to turn adjustment wheels, this is a very nicely made scope and the built-in light is well placed to light up your subject. Seeing your subject in mirror-image takes some getting used to, but the clarity of the view, IMHO, makes it worth the effort. At it's price, it's also a bargain. Fits in your pocket, too. ... show more

  • Remarkably clear optical quality for the price
If you’re considering this pocket microscope as a value compromise purchase for a fidgeting child then surprise! The marketing claims are in fact true. The optics are clear and sharp. It is also easy to use and better quality overall than I expected for the modest price. It works for curiosity smitten adults too! ... show more

  • Nice scope - especially for the cost.
This is a nice scope and a real value and here's what I like: It's really light to carry. It provides single handed operation. The image is good. It uses one AA battery. I use it at it lowest (20x) magnification as pushing any handheld higher is wishful thinking. But don't get me wrong, it can go higher and still provides a good image. This is a solid tool for insects, coins, etc. This would also be a great gift for the curious child or creating curiosity in a child. ... show more

  • Very Useful device !
For 15 Bucks, this little gem is certainly surprisingly effective and useful ! I use it to view * flat * objects, and it's ideal. Stamps, printing, etc. Keep in mind, the image is REVERSED. So you will view things upside-down and backwards ! Well worth the money for this !
