  • The real deal
Bought two folding ebikes recently and unfortunately they didn't fit in the space reserved for them. So, with a week before the first camping trip we had to scramble to find a suitable carrier that covered all the bases: 1. 2 inch receiver 2. 4" tire slots 3. 120 lb capacity 4. in stock with delivery in less than a week 5. 4+ star reviews Luckily this one was just about the only carrier that met all criteria. I can find no faults with it, other than one observation. First, understand that this is built to last. It is steel, not aluminum. The engineering is excellent, as is the construction. The packaging and instructions are excellent; bags of parts are lettered and these letters are referenced in the instructions so you don't have to wonder. Good drawings of the assembly process. Made in Taiwan, not China, so English is pretty clear. All necessary tools included. Assembly was fast and easy. The only mystery at first for me was how to lock the shorter (bottom) bike holder. You don't insert the key and turn it, you just insert it and then turn the knob and it locks. The instructions aren't really clear. I turned it the first time and deformed the key, but was able to reform it by turning it back the opposite way. Arrived a day before it was supposed to (ordered on Sunday and received on Wednesday). Excellent external packaging and internal blocking. Looks great and is definitely heavy duty. The anti-wobble mechanism works very well. Took it on a 400 mile round trip camping adventure over all kinds of roads. It held up great. Yes, you can tilt it backwards when loaded...see their video! But realize that if you have 120 pounds of bikes on it you have to be strong enough to be able to push it back up. It isn't a hydraulic mechanism; it is a simple notched release and catch operated by a lever. When loading it, I dropped it back for the inner bike, then once the tires were in the slots I put it back to 90 degrees and finished securing it. The outer bike can be set in without tilting. The foam-covered bike folders adjust easily and hold the ebike frame well, even tho the bike frame is a fat rectangle (holds the big battery) where they meet. The velcro straps are more than big enough for 4" fat tires. And they hold amazingly well... the first time I took the outer bike off one velcro strap happened to flop over on itself a little and I could not pull the bike free! Between the bike holders and the velcro your bikes aren't going to move. The only issue I've seen after the one trip is the foam holders wore through a bit where they met the frame. I'm sure this is because they are rounded and the frame is rectangle. I'm not concerned; the bikes were not damaged, but I am sure over time they would wear through enough to scrape the paint off the bikes. I'm just going to wrap some duct tape around damaged foam and maybe place a old washcloth between the foam and the frame. Other than that small issue, I highly recommend this carrier! ... show more

  • Hassle free bike loading and securing
I bought this carrier for transporting two ebikes, which are typically a lot heavier than regular bikes. I previously used a large hitch mounted cargo carrier which I modified and used typical motorcycle tie downs to secure the bikes. This worked but the carrier was very heavy and the straps took time to put on or take off. The KAC is a well thought out design that adapts easily to any size or type of tire and wheel base. When loading two bikes, the center mast stays folded down until the first bike is in position nearest the vehicle. I pick up the front first and place, then the rear of the bike. Ebikes are too heavy to pick up all at once. Then the mast is pivoted up to vertical. The ball detent at the base must be pressed in a lot to allow the mast to be moved and takes a bit of pressure. Using something besides your finger might be necessary depending on how strong your fingers are. Once up one of the padded hooks is slid down to the top tube of the bike and clamp knob is tightened. Done. The second bike is even easier. The second bike should have the front pointed in the opposite direction to prevent the handlebars interfering with each other. One of the hooks comes with a locking knob. The knobs can be switched between the long and short hook. My wife's RAD Mini Step Thru has no top tube, but the short hook will work with it just fine in spite of that. My Frey full size mountain bike is happy with the long hook. The carrier has a latch to allow tilting the whole rack, bikes and all back to allow your hatchback or your truck tailgate to open. Nice. Be warned though that with two ebikes loaded it is best to have someone help hold the bikes up to gently lower them when releasing the latch. The center of mass is well away from the pivot point! At home, the carrier folds up 90 deg to save some space and makes it easier to handle while mounting or removing from the vehicle. Highly recommended! Edit: After using it for hundreds of miles I have found that the foam protective sleeve on the mast hooks will tear and wear through with the bike getting tossed around on rough roads. The bike remains secure, but the worn foam led to rubbing on my bikes top frame tube. Keep a careful eye on the condition of the foam. I replaced it with some tygon tubing which is very tough. ... show more

  • Mostly Positive
First, the positive. When I assembled it, which was incredibly easy, I had a question regarding which hook to use, since I was using it primarily to transport a single bike. The company was incredibly fast in getting back to me, twice, with an answer. Second, I like the rack. It works well, is solidly build. My bike is secure. Also, I can get the bike into my semi-short garage and close the door. It does not protrude too much off the bumper. Second, I love the fold up option which significantly reduces the distance it protrudes when I leave the bike at home. I also added caution tape across the bottom of the rack (too many crazy drivers in our town). I also like the locks on the hooks and hitch. Nice, solid. My one complaint is a design flaw. I ride a Trek stagger, which has a diagonal center brace. (See picture) That's not a problem with securing the bike. It's solid held by the hook. However, I noticed that an earlier review mentioned that their bike was stolen from the rack. I studied my setup and realized that if someone did want to steal it, they could, with some effort, slide my stagger bike one way or the other, and slide it out from under the hook. It would only take a couple minutes to remove it. Stagger bikes, and many bikes designed for women, have diagonal cross bars. I came up with two solutions. One is to install a horizontal bar that locks to your steering column and the seat column. They're not too expensive. Second, (the solution I chose) you can use a short locking cable to lock the bike from being slid left or right. It would be nice if the company who manufactures this rack came up with a way to lock the bike from moving left or right. The velcro straps, while nice, will not slow down a thief if you have a diagonal cross bar. ... show more
