I've tried so many different dyes in the past year for my grays. From Madison Reed to Naturetint and Herbatint, products that claim to be "natural". Well, those do not stand a chance compared to this dye. So many things I love about applying this hair color! Firstly, it's so easy and effortless to soak my roots because of the consistency of this foam. It goes on very smoothly. Secondly, it's virtually mess free and it doesn't stain skin as badly as other dyes I've tried. I do apply a solution to my forehead in advance, but in many other cases, that hasn't worked greatly with other dyes. Thirdly, it left my hair soft and easy to manage, unlike the other products I mentioned that dryer my hair and made it feel like a mess. I was in an accident not too long ago and had some issues some of them neurological. The medication I have been on has caused some hair loss and color dullness among many things. As I am regrowing some of the lost hair with treatment the color is not the same. I have always had a luxurious dark color, till now. It's rather dull and not as dark. So I've given some at home hair coloring a try. It's not bad, but what I get is some patches because I also seem to have arm weakness. So on the John Frieda box, and I was already a fan of other John Frieda products, the box shows a picture that this foaming product will not have those patchy spots. I wanted to give it a try. The steps are not new and shocking. There is a developer and coloring creme, conditioner, black gloves, a foamer top and an instruction sheet. When you mix the developer and color you don't turn the bottle upside down you tilt the bottle five times. After that you take the screw top off and put the foaming top on, you squeeze the bottle to create a softball size amount of colored foam in your palm. You always put the foam in your hand to put on your hair. The instruction booklet shows you the best way to foam your hair. You want your hair to be completely covered in foam to look foamy. I have shoulder length hair and I used 3/4 of a bottle. The color was perfect. PERFECT. It sat on my hair for 30 minutes. I rinsed it out, and then I lathered it up with the conditioner that came in the box that smelled divine. Which by the way the dye even smells a little bit yummy. The color is great, it's even, it's shiny, it's glossy, highlighted, very natural looking. I love it. It really is very touchably beautiful. I just ordered three more boxes in high hopes that my hair regrowth treatments are going to work out successfully. I am very pleased. ***UPDATE*** I dyed my hair over 3 weeks ago with this product and I am still astounded at the color. It is just as pretty as the first day that I did it. No fade yet. I have had some hair growth so I've got some pesky roots, but the color has stayed just as lush as it was when I first dyed it. ... show more

This is the only hair color I use to cover my grey hair. I make every effort to take good care of my hair and keep it in great condition. So I am very picky about what I use on my hair. I learned about this product from my sister. Her hair was looking so shiny and black. I had to touch it and it was soft. I asked her what did she use to color her hair and she told me John Frieda. I tried it and I got the same great results, soft shiny hair. It was easy to use. The color coverage was great. I have been using it ever since. I have not considered trying another brand. I have been using this color since I was 16 (10 years now) and have always loved the outcome! It's not too dark like other black dyes and does not leave that awful blue tint, it's just a beautiful dark dark brown. The foam is much easier to use and apply as well. I do feel the formual has changed since I first started using though, this last time I used it I felt the smell was way stronger and more chemically. The gloves have been changed to a cheaper quality as well. The color faded a lot quicker this time as well and I wash my hair a lot less often than I used to! I was excited to receive a vibrancy locking sealant but it did not come with one! ... show more

Pros: I like the foam, it makes it easy to apply. This is also the only brand I could find the color I wanted. I was looking for a warm black brown. Not a red black, not an ash black. I just wanted like a nice melted chocolate color only really dark. Idk why that was so hard to find. Because of that I will be using this brand again since the 3N is exactly what I wanted for color.... but.... Cons: I bought 2 boxes the first time to color my whole head (my hair comes down just passed my shoulder blades), I really only needed one box. My hair started out roughly a level 4-5 split, 5 towards the ends, 4ish towards the roots. The first time I colored it, I had to leave it on for roughly 50 minutes (20 minutes passed the max amount) to achieve roughly color on the box. After about 2-3 weeks (washing about once per 3 days), that color had faded enough that you couldnt even tell my roots from the dyed area, and the ends were even lighter. I just redid my whole head (again used only one box), and this time I did achive the dark color I wanted, but we will see how well it lasts. Also during the first color, since I bought too much and had already mixed up the second box, my mom used up what was left to dye her roots (he hair is very close in color; she uses Loreal Excellence 4 Dark Brown). The John Frieda had awful grey covereage, and what it did cover had faded within juat 3 weeks. With the Loreal she has never experienced this. ... show more

    • Better Than Salon Quality at Fraction of the Price

I used the 3N (Natural Black Brown). I'm Asian with very fair skin and dark brown hair. I used to get my hair colored and permed every 3-4 months. In an effort to reduce salon visits, I've been trimming my own bangs and decided to give home hair color one more try (after previous attempt several years ago was disastrous). The John Frieda foam hair color is a winner for me. I followed the direction verbatim. Start at the roots. After you get all the roots, then add the rest of foam to middle and ends of hair. This is the mistake I think many people make. If you watch the professionals, they always apply color to all the roots first, then work their way out. I left my color in for 25 minutes. All greys were covered. The color is darker at first, but usually get lighter after one or two washings. Second note: I didn't shampoo my hair when washing out the color. I rinsed my hair in lukewarm water (over the tub) then finished with a small amount of the provided conditioner. Shampooing right away will strip the color right off your hair. Next time I will try one shade lighter (even though I'm happy with this one). ... show more

I am very excited about this product. It is very easy to use, ingeniously created. You don't shake the bottle, you just squeeze it and the foam comes out. Easy to apply in the privacy of your bathroom. I am in my early 40s, brunette, but I struggle with a lot of grey hair particularly in the front area. The results are beyond my expectations. I have plenty experiences with dying my hair at home. Tried the salon twice, too. The results of this product are great, salon quality results. It is cost and time effective, which I like. I am really excited to use this product as part of my haircare routine. I no longer dread dying my hair now. I am fairly busy and finding time to schedule couple hours at the hair salon can be difficult for me.
