My refrigerator died and, for various reasons, I’m unable to get a new one in here for a while. I was using a standard picnic cooler and ice packs, but refreezing the ice packs was a hassle, and food wasn’t really kept at a safe temperature. A friend told me about these electric coolers. After researching various brands and checking reviews, I settled on this one. So far, I’m happy. Main thing, this will plug into a wall, not just a car’s cigarette lighter, so I can use it in my home. And it doesn’t pull a lot of electricity, so even a standard electrical extension cord is safe. (No need for a heavy-duty cord.) I considered mini-refrigerators, which are pretty affordable. But they’re heavy, bulky, and the doors swing sideways, which would scrape up my kitchen floor. This Ivation cooler is lightweight, compact, roomy enough for my needs, and the lid opens upward, which is helpful since I have it sitting on my kitchen floor and can reach inside easily. My first tests with the (decades old) thermometer that I use in my koi pond, the temperature readings were about 50*. But my food items felt colder than that, and I wanted to be safe, so I bought a new household thermometer, and new readings have been consistently at 38*, which is considered safe. I’m vegetarian, so I’m not storing raw meat or much dairy, so mostly I’m trying to keep vegetables, the occasional leftover carryout, and opened cans of cat food safe. I feel this cooler is doing the job. A few things to know … The cooling mechanism is in the lid, so the unit is a bit top-heavy. The unit exhausts upward, so resist the idea that you can set anything on top of it. There is a constant “whirring” noise from the fan, but not too loud, and no clunks or on-off interludes. A fair trade off, IMO. Cool air blows from the lid down into the cavity, so don’t fill it too full, or the air vents can be blocked. And keep space between food items inside, so air can circulate. Also, in a slightly humid environment, condensation can drip from the air vents onto your food. No biggie – I lay Handi-Wipes or dish towels over the top layer of food, and they catch any drips. I also put a Handi-Wipe on the floor of the cooler, to collect any water (minimal; I’ve not yet had to change one). When you open the lid, cold air escapes and can take a while to build back up inside, so take out what you need and close it back up quickly. This has been a big help to me in my unique situation. I’ve only been using it two weeks, so I have no comment on durability or longevity. But so far, I’m tickled. I’m hoping it will hold up under steady home AC usage, for a couple of years, at least. Price was reasonable. UPDATE: I've been using this for a month now, plugged into my kitchen wall outlet, and it's working great. Last week (after 3 weeks of use) I noticed it wasn't cooling as cold. I checked under the lid where the cooling mechanism / motor / fan is, and there was some ice build up. It was there still the next day. So I turned the cooler off for a few hours, to allow the ice to melt. Once it was melted and clear, and the little bit of dripped water cleaned up, I turned the unit back on, and within a short time, the temperature was down to about 38* again. Bottom line ... some weekly maintenance is a good idea, and check the motor area for icing over.

I needed something to keep my extra insulin cold (37-47 degrees) during long trips, that was not out of my price range. So far, I've just tested it at home - and it works. After plugging it in to an outlet, the temperature got down to 42 degrees and remained there. I then put in two cans of refrigerator-cold soda (about the size of my insulin pen packs). The cooler remained at that temperature. I kept the cooler plugged in for about ten hours, with no rise in temperature, so the seal on it seems to be good. It's a bit larger than I need, but I'm sure I can find other items to put in there to fill some space. I also like that it is light-weight, so carrying it into hotels will be easy.

This fridge did the trick. It kept our food cool without freezing anything. The cooling and warming functions work quickly once power is connected and stays on. I have a Honda CRV hybrid with decent truck space, but I appreciate the vertical profile of this fridge because it conserves trunk space. We were able to hold the fridge, 4 - 22 inch rolling carryon bags, one- 15 inch rolling laptop bag, 2 shoulder overnight bags, and a dry food bag. It was snug, but that kept the fridge in place while still giving us access to it. While it has a vertical profile, it is still short enough that it did not exceed my trunk cover. We had garment bags on top of our trunk cover and the total trunk contents did not exceed the back seat head rests so my line of sight was clear, and I am only 5’2”. We have used this for two road trips thus far - one13 hour drive and the other a 5 hour drive. It was great not to have to get or replenish ice, which just takes up space in your cooler, and we loved not needing to dump out the melted ice water. It definitely kept our tuna fish sandwiches, yogurt, and fruit cool but not to the point of freezing anything - which was great. If you want to keep something frozen, I doubt it would do that. Figuring out the locking and unlocking system did take a few minutes. I have not used the warming function but did accidentally turn it on when I first used it, and it seemed to work. The light helpfully notified us that we had the warming function on and once we switched it to cool, the fridge cooled down quickly. When our hybrid car was not running the fridge turned off, but the interior of the fridge stayed cool for more than half of an hour. It could have been longer, but that was the average length of our stops. The fridge interior Is not massive but held enough for 4 people. It took us a minute to figure out that the handle serves as a lock - the handle to back locks the fridge while the handle to the front unlocks it and allows you to open the fridge. This is great tool to keep your contents from falling out if the fridge tips over, but it would have been nice if the instructions mentioned that. The first trip we spent about 5 minutes figuring out how to open the fridge and had to keep reminding each other to flip the handle forward when we wanted to open it. NOTE: if your truck is not full, you may need a way to secure it because it will just slide around in an empty trunk. Once we took out our luggage, hearing the fridge slide around our trunk did get a little annoying as we drove around. Also it’s fairly light weight so I could easily see using it to take food to an outdoor event.

Using this portable electric cooler until I can replace the refrigerator in my camper. It is a nice size for personal use and keeps my items nice and cold. Bonus for having wall and car chargers included. Great to keep what I need for a few days at a time.
