  • Yes, it *does* cool and heat items nicely
I got this to replace a similar one I've had for about a decade (that one didn't break until it was inadvertently pushed off a shelf onto concrete). As with that one, this works perfectly well as long as you understand how they work. There is no internal fan to circulate air - there is a metal plate that gets cold or warm depending on which way you flip the power switch. If you put things in that are relatively insulated (things in cardboard, etc) or that barely touch the bottom metal plate, they will take forever to cool down (or heat up) because the heat transfer is from conduction (touching) and not convection (air movement). Juice bags that lay flat on the bottom cool down really quickly. Soda cans don't cool down as fast because not a lot of the can actually is in contact with the bottom. So: you generally want things that have flat surfaces to touch the bottom (and that aren't insulating), or... you just need to put things in that are already cold (or hot). Aside from that boring lesson on heat transfer, I wanted to add that this Cooler/Warmer is very well made given the price point, and I expect it to work as long as the one I bumped off the shelf. It has a good capacity, and it'll hold drinks and sandwiches on trips, which is exactly what I'm getting it for, and it'll also keep hot food hot (well... quite warm at least) if that's what you want instead. The included strap works fine, but this will always be a bit awkward to carry. If you have an area between your seats to set it, the cup holders on the front are nice, but if, like me, you don't, well... they're fine, just not really as necessary. You need a decent amount of room for it if you put it behind a car seat (seat in a car, not child car seat), because the lid hinges open, so you might be able to fit it, say, behind a passenger seat, but not be able to open it en route because the lid hits the back of the seat in front of it. Sound-wise, it is about as loud as a fairly quiet room fan. It's not noticeable in the car, and it won't keep you awake in a hotel room - if you get the 120v to 12v adapter (and I highly recommend that you do - among other things, you can pre-pack the night before and leave it plugged in to keep things at temp, and then you can also use it in your hotel room on the way). ... show more

  • Mobile Fridge
We took this on a multi-day road trip in which I was on a special diet and needed to travel with things I would be able to eat. I followed the advice of others and took a few steps to make it work best for me. 1) I plugged it up in the kitchen the night before we left so it would be nice and cold. 2) I added a frozen gel pack to the inside with my pre-refrigerated items prior to leaving in the morning. 3) I kept it plugged in at our hotel rooms so the inside stayed cold. One of the rooms we stayed at didn't have a fridge but that was no problem for us because we had this! I was impressed with the capacity as well. If you are good at Tetris, you would be surprised at the amount of stuff this thing will hold! I highly recommend to anyone that doesn't want to deal with the continuous cycle of melting ice or the possibility of water/ice getting into food containers (gross!) This is the way to go. I look forward to using it on other trips. ... show more

  • Basic features but works well
Cools well, even will form a bit of ice on sodas (cooler has no thermostat control). Small enough to fit behind a seat in car. In a motel room (you need to buy optional AC converter) the noise is very noticeable but it's a steady fan noise. You can't hear it in a car though.

  • Works great
What a great little cooler. Plug it in and turn it on and in less then 30 minutes the items and just about cold. Shut it off and 6 hours later it’s still coldish. Not that big but very effective.

  • What it is, and what it isn't.
First and foremost, this is an insulated cooler not a refrigerator or oven. Notice how the positive reviews say it KEPT items cold/warm and the negative reviews say it didn't MAKE items cold/warm. They're both correct. The 12v power amounts to a built in ice pack or warmer that remains cold/warm while it's powered (and therefore can last longer than a traditional ice pack). It works just like a regular non-powered insulated cooler with an ice pack in it. Add the ice pack to a bunch of warm stuff and it won't do a good job of making everything cold. Add the ice pack to a bunch of cold stuff and it will delay it from getting warmer. That's exactly how the 12v power effects this insulated cooler/warmer. PROS - It's like having an ice pack or warmer that lasts until the power is out. - The cup holders can be convenient in certain situations. - The lid is raised by 1-2" so it can hold things that are higher than the top of the cooler/warmer when it is open. CONS - It is not capable of making things cold/warm like a refrigerator/oven. It only keeps already cold/warm things cold/warm. Envision a long duration insulated cooler. - It operates via an outside air heat exchange so there is a fan running. It's not loud and can be ignored, but it can easily be heard in quiet places. - I found the air heat exchange becomes less effective with altitude. Cooling/warming is best at sea level. It hardly works at all at 10,000 ft. If you plan on using this at over 5000 ft altitude you will be better off spending your money on a high-quality insulated cooler instead. - It does not cool well in direct sunlight. The dark plastic gets very warm and can significantly counteract the cooling function. Of course, this is a PRO in regard to the warming function. - Since it works via an outside air heat exchange, the cooling/warming becomes less effective the greater the temperature difference is. i.e. do not expect this to work well at keeping drinks frosty cold in a hot car sitting in the sun with the windows rolled up. BOTTOM LINE This can be great in certain scenarios and horrible in others. Make sure your expectations align with what it actually does and that none of the cons becomes a deal breaker. ... show more
