  • Excellent technical support and an excellent product. Flawless oepration after 3 months.
Style: Roomba s9+
Updated: 12/30/2024: After 3 months of operation, I must say the unit performs flawlessly. I am a very happy customer. I bought this unit refurbished, not new. I had initial problems and support verified that the unit was under warranty and helped me as though the unit was new. Almost all of the problems I had with the unit were related to my misunderstanding important details. I have found during the first 3 months of ownership, that doing routine maintenance such as replacing filters and brushes is so easy, and it only takes a minute or two. The parts are available on Amazon, Walmart, and other places at a significant discount. Original post: Regardless of what product you buy, whether it is a cell phone, a car, a drone, a computer, or a robot vaccuum cleaner, the most important thing is the support you get after you make a purchase. Everything breaks at one point or another, especially when you are dealing with mechanical things. This is where the I Robot company shines. They stand behind their products, and offer excellent support. And I mean they are VERY supportive. I had inital difficulties with the unit, and the I-Robot technical support staff worked with me. We figured out all of the problems, and the unit now works perfectly. Most of the problems were typical vaccuum cleaner issues like a clogged hose, dirty brushes, dirty bin area, and other debries causing issues. Keeping the unit clean and looking after it makes a big difference. Don't expect it to take care of itself because it can't. You have to help it out sometimes. A great feature is that the app for the unit will tell you when to replace filters and brushes. It even takes you to the store to select the correct part for you. The initial problems I had with the unit are listed below: 1. It cleaned well at first but soon after It did not vacuum well and left a lot of obvious surface debris behind. The fix was to clear the pet fur that clogged the vaccuum hose that leads to the bin. 2. The mapping feature just didn't seem to work. Initially it just mapped one upstairs bedroom and on suite bathroom. It ignored the second bathroom, bedroom, and loft. I reran the mapping feature many times and it just didn't look like my upstairs. But after reading up on it from articles they sent me, I realized it had mapped the places it could get to, not necessarily the whole floor plan. From there I was able to figure out where the rooms were. Now I have scheduled jobs that clean specific areas and stay away from other areas. 3. The lid switch just didn't work. It started complaining that the lid was open the first day. Then the problem would become intermittent until it failed completely. Support people showed me a simple fix for that and now I no longer receive false errors. 4. I used the phone app to register the product, and it used the serial number to register it with IRobot. But when I used it to get product support it failed to get the serial number. I couldn't copy and paste the serial number from the app either and it is a very long number. After a couple e-mails back and forth with technical support, they determined my unit was under warranty and told me that if I had any more trouble that it would be covered completely free of charge. I am very happy with this unit and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in a robotic vaccuum cleaner. It is really cool, and very much like the droids in Star Wars. It takes a bit to get used to but having a robot clean the floors on a regular daily scheduled basis is a very nice service to have. Rest assured their product support is there to help you get through any difficulty. ... show more

  • $600 and disappointed (Update - Solid do not buy x2) $600 and disappointed (Update - Solid do not buy x2)
Style: Roomba s9+
First this thing is loud. The rubber scrapers/rollers squeak on our floors. It's pretty annoying, I even use it a my alarm clock now. While it is loud when cleaning your floors there is nothing that compares to when it empties into the base. High pitched vacuum noise as loud or louder than my shop vacuum. I am not exaggerating. I had a $180 Shark that was dumb as a rock, banged hard into everything, not as loud and cleaned as well. This is supposed to replace the Shark. ___________________ On the Seventh day... After it woke me up it vacuumed for a bit and did it's 'I stopped vacuuming for a reason' beep. I had some things to do so I checked the app. It showed it was still cleaning. But it wasn't. Eventually I remembered it exists and found it. I pressed clean and it would not resume. So I put it on the dock and it still showed it was cleaning as it was charging. Came back and the Roomba didnt respond to either the app nor the 'clean' button. It needed a reboot. Held the 'clean' button for 20 seconds and it rebooted. Still nothing. I waited again. Pressed the 'clean' button again and it finally started to reboot. It told me it had an error 15, some internal error it was able to clear on its own. But no clue what it was. Finally it starts working again and I set it to clean again. Seven days and this thing already had an internal error. $600 gamble if this will happen again. I'm going to exchange this one. I don't feel like dealing with a deteriorating unit which may fail outside of the 30 day azon return period and get a refurbished unit from a warranty return with iRobot. Update: Since I posted I still ran the vacuum to see if things that happened were a fluke. Maybe my expectations were too high? I've come to find out they really aren't. So, the vacuum tried to 'mount' the dock. No, not in the I'm going home to charge and empty my bag. Nope, it decided to hump the dock at an approach angle of 45°, then after a minute of rocking up and down it backed off, spun around 360° and started it again. This happened 4-5 times before I picked it up and placed it away from the dock. Something else I've learned is that everytime something gets stuck in the brushes I need to clear the brushes and then put it back on the dock to 'reset' it. Pressing the clean button will not get it to start cleaning again. It just toots its cheery little tune and sits there. I did not have this problem with the Shark that the Roomba replaced. The worst part of it is that after being on the dock it will not pick up the job where it left off. So half the floor is clean. If I set it to clean again it starts with cleaning the area it has already cleaned. I run this vacuum once a day. I can count on my hand the number of days that this vacuum has run trouble free for me and still have 3 fingers left over. Update, again (2 months): Do not buy this junk. It literally said it was stuck on a ledge... In the middle of our hardwood floor. Nothing around it. Now it has taken to trying to empty it's bin before it starts a job, repeatedly. Today it was 3 times in succession before I pulled it off it's dock. What programming says keep emptying your bin multiple times before you start a job. And the vacuum's bin is already empty. Who programs these things? ------------ Update 11/24/23 It is officially no longer working. It had a fault stating that the bumper was jammed and to tap it a few times to loosen it. I tapped it, and tapped it and tapped it some more. No change. Put it on the dock. No change. Rebooted it. No change. Tapped it again. No change. Rebooted it again. Yes, finally change. It moved a few feet from the dock and spun in a circle for about a minute and then the error of stuck bumper is back. I give up. I will continue to update all the new faults I discover until Amazon makes it unable for me to edit this review. ... show more

  • excellent robotic vacuum
Style: Roomba s9+
Disclosures: I reside in a 2- story home with wood and porcelain tile floors. The carpeting is limited to low pile area rugs within the bedrooms. I use the S9 on the 1st floor while a Roomba model 770 vacuums the upstairs. My review will be limited to the S9 performance on hard floors with little in the way of carpet. Pros: • The S9 has run flawlessly after solving a few initial problems (error codes for Roomba’s bin is full and close the lid when neither issue was in fact true). Cleans corners, moderately small sized rugs so much better than previous roombas. • More efficient, and therefore faster cleaning, with newer technology. Greatly improves cleaning on floors by systematically cleaning floors as opposed to previous algorithms that appear random, and unnecessarily time consuming. In my use, It’s been uncommon for the S9 to miss debris on the floor. • S9 does away with light boxes. Clean a single room of choice, such as the kitchen, by a few taps on the app. much less prep is required. • Ability to set up “stay out” areas where sensitive objects are positioned. • Object recognition: greatly reduces he amount of banging into furniture. Although previous roombas would slow down before contacting a wall, furniture isn’t as fortunate. The S9 is gentle around all obstructions. Although it might occur, I’ve yet to see the S9 run headlong into chair or table legs or other obstructions. • Self-cleaning: I didn’t think I would be as happy with this feature as I am. In fact, I think it may be the greatest improvement Roomba has made. The S9 and cleaning base has (when sold together, model number is S9+ ) practically eliminated the routine of manually pulling hair and dust out of the brushes. Although the time may come, I’ve yet to have to clean the bristles since its 1st run on Christmas day. I never knew how much I hated that chore until it was no longer required. • Much more, but these features are, to me at least, the most significant. It has (somewhat) won over my wife. She will now typically pay Roomba a grudging compliment after it has run. Cons: • Price. No way around it, this is an expensive device to vacuum the floor. And it will never clean baseboards or stairs or get into every tiny nook or cranny on the floor as a manual vacuum cleaner will. • Operating noise. Not much progress has been made by irobot in-regards to operating noise abatement. Don’t expect to get much sleep if the S9 is vacuuming in or adjacent to your bedroom. • Increased complexity. My S9 ran into several persistent error codes that took a considerable amount of time to solve. If you don’t enjoy occasionally tinkering and troubleshooting should your Roomba run into a problem, then purchasing a S9 may not be the right choice. On a positive note, Roomba customer services has been stellar, in my experience. Two calls were answered in under 3 minutes and the tech was professional and knowledgeable. However I recognize that it is difficult to make sweeping statements with a sample size of 2 calls; merely reporting my experiences as positive. after solving these initial teething problems, the S9 has run and docked without intervention and without any errors. If you aren't a fan of household chores, the S9 fits in your budget, and you don't mind or enjoy an opportunity to problem solve, then think you should consider it. be advised that the Miele C2 kicks butt for less hope this helps ... show more

  • Returned it after 3 days....EDIT 2nd unit works well
Style: Roomba s9+
Never got to use it long enough to know if it would clean well. Within 2 days of having received it, it repeatedly threw up Error Code 31. Just like many reviewers have noted on Amazon and other websites as well. We packed it back up and returned it. Left the dirt in the collection bin so if they tried to resell it to another customer, they would immediately know that weren't receiving a new one. As soon as my money is refunded, I may chance it and buy this same item one more time but if I do, at the first hint of trouble, it will immediately be returned. This is Roomba's current flagship product. For the price, it should not have so many problems. If I do buy another and it works great, I will come back and update this review. Edit: Went ahead and ordered another of same product. Price had also dropped a couple hundred dollars. This second unit is working well. Have had it about a month and other than a couple times it prowls around and seems to take a long time to find its way home, have had no problems. A bit of advice: Having good maps makes a HUGE difference. Though it was a pain, we spent a day following the unit around while it was doing its training run, emptying rooms of every possible piece of furniture (not the couch, beds, dresser, elliptical and other heavy things) to allow it to map as much of the space as possible. We did move all chairs, small tables, ottomans, benches, etc. It was kind of a pain to have to move and put things back ( had to hit the pause button on my phone a bunch as we quickly got things out of the way) but decided it was worth spending one day going to this trouble to try and get as complete of a map as we could. Because...any space that is not mapped during trying runs will not get cleaned later. Even though it says it will find and clean new spaces if it notices that a chair has moved or something, we did not find that to be true. Any space not mapped simply gets ignored. One other thing to mention is that though you would think it would map one whole room during training before moving to another, that is not the case. You will think the thing is crazy as it will appear there is no rhyme or reason as it darts hither and yonder and then goes back several more times to an area you thought it had finished mapping. Be patient; it will give you a fairly accurate map at the end. (Once your training/mapping are done, you will find that taking the time to go through the hassle will be worth it. Also, during vacuuming mode, it does not run around all crazy but does go back and forth in an orderly fashion while cleaning a room before moving on to the next room.) I would recommend this item. I also recommend getting the self-emptying bin. That is definitely worth the added expense. I will try and remember to come and update this review periodically after I have it for awhile. I depend on reading helpful reviews when I am buying things. Hope this review will be helpful to others. EDIT#2....To change from 1 star to 3. 2nd unit is still doing ok. Have been using it for about 6 weeks, I think. But, I am still only cautiously optimistic after reading so many poor reviews that have been posted after Christmas 2020. I really hope we continue to have success with this product. Will come back and update if anything changes. EDIT#3 ....I bumped it up to 4 stars. Have now been using my Roomba for about 3 months and it is working just fine. Fingers crossed!! I totally recommend getting the self-emptying model. Really glad I did. I'm still cautiously optimistic about this product. Will update occasionally especially if we begin having problems. It's an awfully expensive product for it not to work properly. ... show more

  • Love it Love it
Style: Roomba s9+
Bought this on Prime day since it was on sale and I love it. I was concerned that it wouldn't be able to go over a small hump in the floor, possibly thinking it was a threshold, but nope, it drove right over it. It maneuvers well through the house. Pros - Cleans in a grid pattern - see photo of nice lines left in carpet - Travels from room to room whether it's over carpet or vinyl. - Has good suction. I have thick/dense carpet and it does a good as my stand up vacuum - Very thorough. Does a good job of going around table legs (see photo with circle path around table leg) and even underneath couches that have a flap at the bottom - Can work in connection with the Bravva mop - You can direct it to clean specific rooms and stay out of others - When you select the rooms you want to clean, it gives an estimate of the time it takes to complete it. - You can choose from 3 suction levels - It empties itself, so no handling the dust can - No bad smell like my old vacuum Cons - Some rooms it vacuums against the grain of the carpet. For one room, I was able to place a divider in that room using the app so that it mapped the room differently. - It has had about 3 tech glitches, but that is expected because tech isn’t perfect. I either rebooted the bot, closed and reopened the app or gave it time to sit and then it worked properly. - When it does the hallway it goes over the thresholds to get the edges and slightly enters the other rooms. This is a con if it goes into a room where you don't want to be disturbed or go into a room where it gets stuck. So you h have to remember to close the doors. The only threshold that it has a problem going over is the bathroom (that threshold needs adjustment, not the bots fault) and if it's cleaning the hall it will go over it and then can't drive back out. There is a setting that says to get as close to the edge without touching edges but I haven't tried it yet to see if that helps. - October 2023 Update - Overall I'm still happy with this but since writing the initial review the vacuum has been giving me a bin error regularly since mid-September even after it is thoroughly cleaned. The app says they are working on a fix coming out in Oct but I've yet to see it happen. ... show more

  • Expensive piece of frustration - NO CUSTOMER SUPPORT Expensive piece of frustration - NO CUSTOMER SUPPORT
Style: Roomba s9+
I had a neato for 7 years or so but finally decided to upgrade it, after shopping around I took the plunge on my first roomba. To repeat many other reviews, this is a pretty flawed expensive device. I have a small, straightforward studio apartment, so it should be ideal for robot vacuums. But this guy gets stuck on nothing, gets lost for no reason, and fails to complete the job on a fairly regular basis. Weirdly, when I first got it, it worked great. It was consistently excellent for 4 months, but it has failed to complete a job since early February and I have no idea why. I've done all the troubleshooting, but to no avail. Contrary to other reviews, no one at iRobot has responded to my multiple e-mails and troubleshooting tickets. Whatever the failure is, it appears to be with the software's mapping feature, which seems to confuse to device more than help it (see the pictures for the accurate mapping in the first months, to the completely crazy mapping of its failed jobs these last few months). March 1, 2021 - still struggling with this stupid thing; just gets more troublesome. Firstly, setting up the maps (again!) is cumbersome. When you delete the map and try to make it relearn your space, it requires 3 tries, so that's what I'd do, but sometimes one of those tries would be wildly off base, so I'd delete it so it wasn't screwing up the map. Ok that seems simple enough right? EXCEPT if its the 3rd try that's a crazy incorrect map, if it happens on the 3rd try it automatically saves it all and that's your map, no option to delete the bad pass or correct the map, your only option at that point is to reset the mapping function completely and start the 3 tries over again. I probably spent 6 months deleting bad passes/starting over/etc just getting to the point where my apartment is correctly mapped. But then here's the best part, AFTER you have a correct map saved and programmed, any time after that if the robot comes up with a crazy pass that gives it a wildly incorrect map, it REPROGRAMS the map to the crazy incorrect one! You can't delete it the bad pass, you can't correct the programmed map, it just says "you have an updated map" and you're stuck with it...what's the point of programming the map in the first place if its just going to screw it up with any one bad pass?!?! (for real, why isn't there just an option for me to correct or at least delete the incorrect parts of the map?) So fine, the mapping function is a total waste, but maybe it still works like an old school robot vacuum, just move forward with suction, detect objects and move around them, going back and forth until its done? Nope! Without the map it appears to be totally helpless. It get los and stuck in areas where all it has to do is move to the left or the right, or my new favorite mishap, it finds a spot near the base and then just vacuums that single spot for an hour and a half until it says its battery is low. When I look at the map after its done, its not because it thought this was an especially dirty area, according to the map the robot appears to think its found a mile long section of my apartment that it has been going down (when in reality its just been sitting in one spot with the suction running - see attached video, it literally just sits there and does that until its battery runs down). 3.25.21: After relaying this behavior to iRobot, it was recommended I reboot the machine. After doing so, the machine continued to not work correctly. Because my machine was older than 1 year and not warrantied, iRobot's genuine advice was to buy a new one. No repair process, no diagnostics, they literally just sent me a link to drop another $1099.00 on a new machine because my 18 month old vacuum stopped working. Stay away from this one, iRobot is clearly not ready to be utilizing the mapping function of robot vacuums, go with the cheaper "dumber" options or just a different brand and avoid this frustrating over priced model. Side note, I took the neato vacuum I had been using for 7 years to my office and its still working just fine there, probably should have resisted the urge to upgrade and stuck with the tried and true device. ... show more

  • A major upgrade from the i7+ and 980 A major upgrade from the i7+ and 980
Style: Roomba s9+
If you want to save time and energy, yet have clean floors, this baby is for you! I’ve had my Roomba 980 for two years and had recently bought a Roomba i7+ when the s9+ came out. I loved both my Roomba vacuums and a major selling point on the i7+ was the cleaning base and the fact that it would empty itself 30 times into a neatly disposable bag, rather than requiring me to empty the bag for every run. Loving the self-emptying feature, I jumped on the upgrade to the s9+ due to three major points: - smarter navigation, - more suction power, - and the ability to clean inside corners. The upgrade from the i7+ to the i9+ was totally worth every single penny for me. The s9 happily works through areas where my 980 and i7 got stuck, cleans corners where my old Roombas always left dirt, and climbs over a ¾-inch lip going from light tile to dark-brown painted concrete and vice versa that my other two robot vacuums always got stuck on, so I had to leave that room closed and clean it separately. I couldn’t believe the situations the s9 can work its way out of. The ¾-inch lip and two other troublesome ¾-inch slanted thresholds are no barrier to this baby. The first time up the ¾-inch step, Bertie, as we call him, got stuck. The next time, he worked his way about and finally made it over. From then on out, he has headed right for the middle of the lip and nailed it every time. He also cleans by a chair where there’s probably about an inch of clearance for him, and his training run had him turning bit by bit and retrying until he made it through the gap. And the way this guy learned all the corners in our house: amazing. Yeah, they did some major work on the Roomba AI and it shows. The s9 also quickly built a smart map (1 ½ training runs and one cleaning run) of our bottom floor, which is about 1,800 square feet. He always makes it back to his base, which doesn’t always happen with the older models. It also seems to clean longer on a charge, but I haven’t timed it. I’m posting a video of the s9 on a training run step where it’s learning how to navigate under a small piece of furniture with four legs. We are VERY happy with this new addition to the Roomba family. We run the s9+ downstairs every night and run another Roomba upstairs during the day a few times a week. It’s incredibly freeing to know that our Roomba is running every night cleaning all the West Texas sand and dirt that we and the dogs carry in, and I don’t have to worry about emptying the bin every run. I have a chronic illness and this Roomba truly adds to the quality of my life, saving me time and energy. Not to mention, the Roomba eliminates the stress of having a constantly dirty floor. (Even when we vacuumed every few days, our floor would be drifting with sand and dust.) Plus I can save my energy for other more enjoyable projects, things that I WANT to do – sorry, but vacuuming is not on that list. I listened to my friends rave about their robotic vacuums for quite a while before trying one, and once I had tried a Roomba, I was a believer. If you have a Roomba i7+, the s9+ is a major upgrade and worth every single penny. If you have anything less than an i7+, this vacuum is worth double every penny. I kid you not. This thing is so smart (watch a training run), has way more vacuum power, cleans corners, gets closer to the walls, and doesn’t get stuck under overlying edges (such as my dishwasher) the way the other models did. I’m just hoping the next model folds laundry. 😉 Let Amazon donate to your favorite charity! • Great vacuum. Terrible robot. Great vacuum. Terrible robot.
Style: Roomba s9+
TL;DR - To replace my i7+, I figured the s9+ would only be upgrades and a better experience. It wasn’t. Poor navigation ruins an otherwise fantastic vacuum robot. I’ve had an i7 since early 2018. Just me and my wife in the single story house then. When I got it to map the house I learned all about how much work it takes to make the house mapping friendly for a Roomba vacuum. Not just clean the floor of cords etc but also small tables and chairs, bathroom mats, and other similar items. So you have to wait until the robot is done mapping sufficiently before putting everything back. When we moved to our second house, I put the i7 upstairs. Finally got another good map and used it for a year. When it broke and I removed the i7 from my account, it offered to save the map to use with compatible robots which I gratefully accepted. So I got the s9 hoping I wouldn’t have to do a mapping run. This is where the problem reared it’s head. Great idea to save a map for other robots. But other robots need to be on a suitable software update that allows them to use it. And that was the first problem. iRobot has never allowed users to manually update their software. I waited 24hrs to allow it to update with no results. So I started a mapping run again. Here was the second problem. The s9 would take an hour and a half to do one mapping run, and in the end, it would get hung up on trying to map the water closet. It couldn’t seem to map that and move on to other rooms. It only got 3 of the 8 rooms upstairs. Finally, all this happening with kids and other obligations made having the bed covered in small furniture and bathroom mats to accommodate the robot made everything extremely stressful and inconvenient. The fact is, when getting an iPhone that costs $1000, 9/10 times moving your stuff from your old phone to the new one goes without any issues. A robot that also costs $1000 and, moreover, claims to adapt to your routines and make life easier, is failing at that mission when you have to babysit the thing to make a map of your house, especially a map that already exists from a previous robot. Change rooms? Can’t do that. All other rooms are being used for things that won’t allow a robot to be in there safely. This also begs the question: why is it on me to make special allowances for a robot that costs $1000? The price of a MacBook Air? The price demands a certain polish to the experience which is ultimately not delivered to the user. So, in summary, pros: soft operation around walls and furniture. Algorithm to get close edge cleaning is well made so props for that. Suction is fantastic. Pretty quiet for all the suction, and the exhaust is defused so it won’t blow debris behind it as it cleans. Cons: mapping algorithm is horrendous and very dependent on the user to accommodate it to make a semi decent map of their floor. Roller brushes are so large and press so hard on the carpet that I noted they stopped running several times during a cleaning run. The carpet was too thick even though it’s only medium pile, so that must have overheated the roller motor. It restarts after a few seconds, but it’s still not ideal. The robot could not move past the water closet. It would get stuck in between the toilet and the wall, and ram itself everywhere trying to break free. Finally, the side brush is very weak and rolls over itself on carpet as it travels, eventually becoming disfigured and not being able to work right. I ended up getting a Roborock Q5+. The mapping run it did to map all 8 rooms upstairs took 10 minutes, as opposed to then iRobot s9+ taking 1.5hrs for 3 rooms. I didn’t move any furniture or bath mats. Just left the doors open and went to do other things. Came back to a complete map and set up the rooms the way I like along with no go zones. This cost half the price of the s9+. iRobot needs to either improve their algorithm for maps much more than currently, enable a way to force a firmware update in the app for the robots to use saved maps from robots using newer firmware, or switch to LiDAR navigation already. It’s a shame. The one clean run I did in the bedroom collected a crap ton of dirt and hair the i7 had never managed to pick up. It’s a fantastic vacuum. It’s just a terrible robot. ... show more
