A handyman I hired had to jerry-rig it as it came with no hardware, and I opened it after return window because it took me a while to find a handyman reference from friends. If I ever order anything “open box” I will try to open it upon receipt immediately to check that it has all the parts it says it does. This is a very durable metal dog door. Most are plastic and I wanted the metal one to eliminate the risk of it breaking with dog's "launching" out the dog door. The door has an all metal frame and a heavy duty plastic flap for the door that has a magnet on the bottom to keep it closed. I seems to seal fairly well so we can keep the door open without losing much air conditioning or heat. It also has a hard pvc insert that you can put in to keep the dogs outside. Installation - The biggest challenge is cutting the hole in the door - I used a jigsaw, but make sure you have the right kind of blade - my door was wood encased in metal so I needed a metal saw blade. If you do it accurately, then you don't need to drill as big of holes for the nuts and bolts that secure the door. Installation directions are decent, but the template could be improved. The only issue was that I ordered a white color door and received a silver colored one that wouldn't match my door. Amazon offered to send me another IF I returned the first one. I told them that I really didn't really want to return it due to the hastle and I could really just paint it. They also offered me a credit (for paint and my time) if i kept it and chose to paint it. I chose to keep it and paint it. Not bad and the door ended up only costing me half as much even though I had to paint it which wasn't too bad. I would HIGHLY recommend this dog door! We have a 4 yo chihuahua, and we always had to get up to let her in or out the door to the entertainment room in the evenings. We decided to try the pet door after reading some reviews. Simple installation. We enticed Gamma with some treats a couple of times until she understood how it worked. Within an hour or so, she had adopted it as her door. We’re delighted. The pet door is exactly what I wanted. My dog is 25 lbs and easily uses the size medium. The slide closure works well and the door itself is sturdy. The medium appeared too small when I opened the box but went ahead with the installation since the door installer said it would be ok. I did not do the installation so unable to comment on that ... show more

I've installed several pet doors for myself and friends. In the past I'd used PetSafe, but they changed the design from a slide-down cover to this chintzy clip on cover! And the price for the PetSafe medium size is $15 higher than Ideal's medium! I'm very happy I went with Ideal this time. Just as sturdy and nice looking as PetSafe, and the door cover (for night time and vacation) slides down and locks in to place, instead of clipping over like the new PetSafe design. Install tip!! Use 2" of painters tape all around the template before cutting your hole. This will keep the jigsaw from marring your door. Cat tip. The medium is perfect size for cats. Took our new cat maybe three very brief training sessions (just a minute or two three times over a 24 hour period) and she now can go in and out of our screen porch with ease. ... show more

    • Install Harder Than Expected.

I found this harder to install than I expected. Granted, I did not remove the screen door for the project-I used the saber saw while the screen door remained installed. Part of the challenge is even thought the saber saw follows the guidelines on one side of the door, the blade tends to bend somewhat while cutting the other side. Same with hole drilling-you can start the hole exactly where you want to but if your drill is not perfect horizontally & vertically it doesn’t come out the other side accurately. The final installation was very good and the product works very well. I only had to remove one level of the expanding frame to fit my screen door-that was nice & easy. The mounting screws extend well beyond the nut & frame on thinner doors & you may feel the need to cut off the excess. ... show more

    • Nice pet door for interior use

We had this pet door installed professionally, so I can't really say how easy it would be for someone to DIY. It did take the installer about two hours and a little "fettling" to get it just right, but it wound up being a perfect fit. We had this installed in an interior door, and it's perfect for that use. (Unless you live in a very moderate climate, it's likely not ideal for use on an exterior door.) My two new kittens very quickly learned to use the door (within half a day); I think the fact that the flap is made of clear vinyl (and that they can see through it) really helps. One kitten even sometimes uses it as a "window"- she likes to sit on one side and look through it. The included blocking panel just slides into place- very useful to keep the kittens on one side of the door or the other. Overall, we are very pleased with this product! ... show more
