  • Helps keep peace among my animals
I have two cats - one is a bit of a bully and the other is the victim of his bullying. I use this door to give my female cat access to my utility room without my male cat being allowed in. This results in a better quality of life for her by giving her a private place with food, water, litter, and a bed where she can escape from the other cat for a while if he tries to start a fight. The door does a great job at opening only for the cats it's supposed to open for. When she approaches, you hear it unlock, and it locks behind her just a second or two after she gets through. It would conceivably be possible for another cat to follow in the cat who is supposed to be allowed in the door, however the timing window would be tight and while it is technically possible, it's unlikely the other animal would act quickly enough to get in before it locks again. Installation into an interior wall was easy, I can't speak to installation into glass or an exterior door or wall - any of these are likely much harder. I can't speak to battery life - I've had it for a couple months now and the batteries are still going strong. But the product works and works well. If you have a space that you want your cat to be able to access and no other critters, this will do the job. There are cheaper devices on the market which use a magnet that you put on their collar. However, that would mean that you have to put a collar on your cat and if it ever lost its collar, the door wouldn't work. This solution is much mor elegant as long as your cat is chipped. It doesn't depend on anything that the cat could possibly lose. All in all, it's a solid product. Expensive, but it does what it says. Think about whether you really need this or whether a similar model that uses a magnet on the collar will do. If you do need the feature that this offers, it's great and you won't be disappointed. ... show more

  • This model doesn't keep out raccoons, but excellent otherwise and has superb company support
I had to return it because it doesn't keep out raccoons. It probably works for other animals, but raccoons are able to grab the door from outside and open it by pulling it toward them. I used this for four days and a raccoon got in and made a mess in my kitchen on three of them. However, this is not a negative review. Surepet has amazing support. I've had a Surepet Dual Scan model for four years and it kept out everything, including raccoons and a cat that tried walking in immediately behind my cat, but wasn't able to because the door locked literrally in his face after my cat passed through. However after four years, it began malfunctioning and so I ordered this cat door, not realizing it wouldn't protect against raccoons. It amazed me when I contacted Surepet support after this model failed to keep out raccoons. Surepet immediately offered to send me a free part that will get my four year old cat door working again. This is amazing support. The warranty is for three years, so it had never occurred to me to ask. I wish I could give this company more than 5 stars. ... show more

  • Easy install, easy training
The media could not be loaded. Short version: Installation took about 30 minutes and the result is seamless. Training took about 30 seconds and our cat now thinks this is the best thing since canned tuna :). Long version: I took our door off in order to install this and found the process very simple despite a less than ideal mounting location. Our door has a single large glass pane running almost it's full height with only just enough space at the bottom for the cat flap. In hindsight I should probably have measured this before buying the flap, but it ended up fitting perfectly! It is definitely lower than the manufacturer's instructions recommend (the bottom edge is supposed to be level with the base of our cat's chest while standing) but our cat doesn't seem to mind at all. The only real hiccup with the install was trying to cut the top edge of the hole so close to the window moulding which got in the way of the jigsaw guide plate. If you have a long enough blade then I'd recommend using blocks of wood to build up a level surface to slide the jigsaw guide plate over. Since our jigsaw blades were all only just long enough to get though the door in the first place, I just took the guiding plate off and did the top edge freehand using my leg to stabilize my arm as the saw tried to buck. This whole issue was very specific to the design of our door and the need to work so close to the window moulding, so long as your door is mostly flat at the bottom the whole process should be much simpler. In fact, I suspect that taking the door off its hinges would be optional in a flatter door, for our situation it was definitely worth being able to lay the door flat. Once the hole was cut, the flap install took only a couple more minutes using the longest screws included. The result is very stable and looks seamless. Training was a breeze as our cat is already used to a regular cat flap. I showed her once that it can open by pushing the flap out and she promptly went through and back in again. She proceeded to repeat that two more times within the next five minutes, purring like a motorboat every time she pushed her way back inside. She's definitely very pleased to no longer have to wait for me to open the door! Other reviews had mentioned cats balking at the sound of the lock mechanism and our kitty is pretty skittish so I'd been worried about that, but she got used to it very quickly (in the video you can see her turn at the sound of it locking again, but she's not very bothered and it doesn't stop her using the door). The only issue is that she doesn't yet understand that our neighbor's cats can't come through it too. As a result, she guards it closely any time there's another cat nearby. When she gets within less than an inch of the inside of the door it does trip the release mechanism so there's a small risk she could let another cat in if she gets too close, however, thus far the only times she's gotten close enough to trip it is when she's actually trying to leave. In summary, this flap is Piper tested and me approved! Piper is a former feral kitty who has learned to love her humans but it's still terrified of pretty much everything else including other cats. Consistently having a safe space that she doesn't have to rely on me to be there to let her in and out of is a game changer for her confidence. ... show more
