  • Seller sent the wrong power cable.
Style: M281fdw
I ordered this renewed printer trying to get a good deal on a decent product during pandemic times (printer prices are astronomical), and thought I had found the right balance between cost and value when I landed on this guy. It came quickly (as in, within a week, so points for that), and I immediately started to unbox it to set it up. Saw the paper in the box that links to the HP support page to set it up, so to do this right I headed to the link. First instruction: "Unpack your printer and connect to power". Easy enough. They sent a power cable and a rusty USB cable. "No worries, I'll most likely never use the USB cable. Let's just plug this sucker in and see how well it prints." I unpacked the bag of cables, and grabbed the included power cable, and began searching for the inlet on the machine. "There it is! Hmm...that looks a little different from the cable they sent... Maybe it still works? Let's just see... nope. This ain't gonna work." Stoked on the fast delivery. Less than enthused that I can't use this until I find an extra standard computer power cable either around the house or at my nearest store. Will update on the printer itself when I find a cable to get it working. Update (Same Day As Delivery): I reached out to the seller and informed them I had to buy the correct cable as an incompatible one was included with the printer, and they graciously reimbursed me for the cable, so I've added back two stars. Another Update (Same Day As Delivery): I bought the correct printer cable and got it plugged in and turned on and took off the rest of the tape holding all the compartments closed. Now the printer complaining of no toner which is weird because the item description clearly states in the fourth bullet point: "Toner included: Black 202(A) cartridge (1400 pg est.), Cyan starter cartridge (700 pg est.), Magenta starter cartridge (700 pg est.), Yellow starter cartridge (700 pg est.)" After searching the rest of the box for this promised toner, none is found. Luckily I ordered some just to have some extra on hand after the intro cartridges deplete. Installed those, and it finally prints. However, I must dock a star for being misled about the included toner. I will continue to test features to ensure the rest of the printer works as expected and report back. Update 5/19/2021: I've learned at the Auto Document Feeder on this printer suffers from a serious design flaw. The instructions for setup of this printer are also unclear, and, unfortunately, the original purchaser of this item (since this is renewed) either didn't follow the updated instructions or were given the old ones and peeled off the plastic that goes over the white mylar strip and the glass screen that the ADF sends the paper through. This causes the paper to get trapped under the white mylar strip and jams the ADF. Some Googling informed me that this issue is widespread, and not isolated to this particular model. Some have found their own solutions to remedy this design flaw. One is to buy a plastic iPad screen protector and cut it to size and lay it down over the mylar strip and the glass scanner window to allow the paper to flow through the ADF. As for me, I simply cleaned the ADF scanning window, grabbed a strip of transparent packing tape, and laid it over the mylar strip and the ADF scanning window, and then grabbed a razor and very carefully cut it to size where the mylar strip ends and the hard plastic of the printer begins so it laid flat on the mylar strip. So far, my tests have shown good-enough-for-me scanning quality, and the paper no longer gets stuck. Those who have experienced this problem should be able to understand my awful attempts at describing it and my homebrew solution. As far as I know, HP has yet to offer an official fix for this problem. One other thing I did to be certain that my third party toner cartridges continue to work with this machine was to refrain from updating the firmware beyond the 20200612 firmware. If one is in need of this firmware, you can still find it if you do enough googling. Apparently HP pushed a firmware after that (something like 202010...something) that breaks the printer for third party toner cartridges (unless you do the chip swap thing I've read about). After all of the above issues and tinkerings, this printer has performed quite well in my few uses. I simply want buyers to be aware of some of the caveats that come with this otherwise decent color laser printer. ... show more

  • Solid Printer For Average User
Style: Printer
This printer is very good on matte paper but struggles a little on glossy HP brochure paper. Setup is simple and paper jams are easy to clear. Changing toner cartridges is very easy. Print quality is very good. I would consider buying a new unit over the renewed, the refurb unit I received functions well but looks like it's seen a lot of use. ... show more

  • Good color laser printer - scanner
Style: M283cdw
Highly useful design: sheet-feeder as well as flatbed (to copy from a book, etc.). Print quality very good - as you'd expect from this manufacturer. Very quiet. Has a USB port so you can scan directly into a flash drive etc. if you wish - a very useful option. Silent when asleep - not a peep.

  • Expect 0 help on setup
Style: M283cdw
The setup instructions that came with it were for a different machine and i guess nothing is “plug&play” anymore

  • tiny vs massive
I love the size of this printer. It fits in my desk drawer, scans and is lazer. You can get the scan doctor app which fixes problems the printer might have. As usual, HP is doing a great job with their products.

  • Reliable model of B&W printer
We are a local computer shop. This is one of the few models of printers we reliably restock again and again. It doesn't need toner replaced to often, and it has the fewest problems.
